Economic Development in Ghana and Malaysia investigates why two countries that appeared to be at more or less the same stage of economic development at one point in time have diverged so substantially. At the time of their independence from the UK in 1957, both Ghana and Malaysia were at roughly the same stage of economic development; in fact, Ghana’s real per capita income was slightly ahead of Malaysia’s. Since then, Ghana’s development has been sluggish, while Malaysia’s economy has taken off into sustained growth and today, the real per capita income of Malaysia is about five times that of Ghana. This volume examines the pre-colonial and colonial economies of both countries, and the economic policies pursued after independence. In doing so, it aims to identify policies which might have contributed to Malaysia’s development and those which might have slowed Ghana’s. The authors ask whether lessons can be learned from the successes of countries such as Malaysia. This detailed comparative analysis will be useful to students and researchers of development economics as well as public policy makers in developing countries. It is written in language which makes it accessible to the general reader.

Isolated on the U.S.-Mexico border, far from any metropolitan African-American community or literary influences, Bernice Love Wiggins, a perceptive young poet, self-published her first, apparently only, book of poetry. One of only a handful of black writers in Texas in the 1920s and 1930s, Wiggins was contemporary with Langston Hughes, Countee Cullen, and Zora Neale Hurston and was among the first female African-American poets published in the United States. Just as the Harlem movement focused on experiences of black Americans who sought relief from racism and endeavored to build communities, Tuneful Tales gives voice to the many-sided black experience in remote El Paso. Whatever Wiggins may have known of her contemporaries more than half a continent away or of the movement itself may never be clear. Disappointingly, after her move to California in the early 1930s, the trail grows cold. Yet the composed young woman who gazes so wisely, if dreamily, from her high school photographs evoked her personae so compellingly in both timbre and substance that great folklorist and critic J. Oh! the Places I've Been is a memoir Bernice Livingston Youtz has written primarily for her family and a few friends. She relates childhood in the Depression of the 1930s (she always knew that it was spelled with a capital D), adolescence during World War II, young adulthood, marriage, children in the post-war 1950s. She recalls an early love of reading which led, not surprisingly, to an aspiration for travel, although there was no opportunity for that until she was an adult, no "study abroad" programs or summers hosteling in Europe. She made up for that in work and travel in post-war Europe, and--after her marriage--she and her husband lived in Beirut, Lebanon, for three years. She writes of the great pleasure she took in raising her three children and in the travel she has been privileged to enjoy in recent years. She is grateful for the privilege of having lived in Lebanon and on two occasions in France, has traveled in some sixty countries. She still reads, thinks often of the many people she has known throughout the world.

This book also illustrates how extremely important it is for man to trust God, which will hold great value to life. A magnet is a piece of metal (matter) that draws and attaches itself to another form of matter. God's Word has drawing power that draws from heaven above from the abundance of God's glory. His Word has a trickle-down effect. Through God's Word, we are able to draw others unto the Lord, from faith to faith and glory to glory. In reading this book, the Spirit lets me know the mantel that God has placed on my life will pass on to you and so on through God's anointing, which shows his supernatural power, the symmetric system of love. Throughout this book, you will see how it displays character, charisma, and the Christlike character that you will find in the Word of God. There is a continual flow of blessings and is marvelous in God's eyes. The eyes of the Lord are upon all those that believe on God's Word. God's Word is his main attraction of love toward us, his only begotten Son who died for the sins of the whole world. That whosoever believeth on him shall not perish, but shall have everlasting life. God's garment is his Word which he clothes us in and hold us together. You will see the urgency for man to live a godly life in Christ. The more you read this book, you will see just how dynamic the Word is and how it connects us to the drawing power of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. (Jesus saves to the utmost.) In the final edification of this book, it lets us know just how real Jesus truly is through the unction of the Holy Ghost. St. John 12:32: "And I, if I be lifted from this earth, will draw all men unto me." In reading this book, the reader will be able to digest the Word on a smaller level to get a better understanding, a better view of what the Lord is saying to his church or to his people. I believe in my heart that God wants his people to have a better understanding of his Word. We just have to hold on to it and stand firm through faith, running the race with patience and not faint.
