“When on July 20, 1944, a bomb—boldly placed inside the Wolf’s Lair (Hitler’s headquarters in East Prussia) by the German Anti-Nazi Resistance—exploded without killing the Führer, the subsequent coup d’état against the Third Reich collapsed. Most of the conspirators were summarily shot or condemned in show trials and sadistically hanged. The conspiracy involved a wide circle of former politicians, diplomats, and government officials as well as senior military men. The Resistance had started as early as 1933 and involved several planned putsches and assassination attempts. Hans B. Gisevius knew or met the major figures—including Beck, Canaris, Oster, Goerdeler, and von Stauffenberg—and barely escaped after the coup’s failure. One of the few survivors of the German Anti-Nazi Resistance, Gisevius traces its history, from the 1933 Reichstag fire to Germany’s defeat in 1945, in a book as riveting as it is exceptional.”-Print ed.
As a child during the war, I remember a wooden gas bus that took me as a "Kinderlandverschickter" from the farm to grammar school every Monday morning. I lived there in the town during the week, probably as the youngest room master. On Saturday afternoons, I drove back through Freiamt to my mother and brother in Ottoschwanden. When the war spread to the south, the grammar school was turned into a military hospital. We returned to Dortmund unscathed via detours. This was followed by periods of holding out in the bunker and major bombing until the Americans liberated us. All in all, these were experiences that shaped my life and would remain a constant source of motivation. You should never give up: there is always a solution, there is always a way forward.
An exquisitely beautiful book ...These stories about birds are ultimately reflections on the curious nature of humanity itself" — Helen Macdonald, author of H Is for Hawk There is no denying that many people are crazy for birds. Packed with intriguing facts and exquisite and rare artwork, Birdmania showcases an eclectic and fascinating selection of bird devotees who would do anything for their feathered friends. In addition to well-known enthusiasts such as Aristotle, Charles Darwin, and Helen Macdonald, Brunner introduces readers to Karl Russ, the pioneer of "bird rooms", who had difficulty renting lodgings when landlords realized who he was; George Lupton, a wealthy Yorkshire lawyer, who commissioned the theft of uniquely patterned eggs every year for twenty years from the same unfortunate female guillemot who never had a chance to raise a chick; George Archibald, who performed mating dances for an endangered whooping crane called Tex to encourage her to lay; and Mervyn Shorthouse, who posed as a wheelchair-bound invalid to steal an estimated ten thousand eggs from the Natural History Museum in Tring. As this book illustrates, people who love birds, whether they are amateurs or professionals, are as captivating and varied as the birds that give flight to their dreams.
This is the first English translation of Bernd Janowski's incisive anthropological study of the Psalms, originally published in German in 2003 as Konfliktgespräche mit Gott. Eine Anthropologie der Psalmen (Neukirchener). Janowski begins with an introduction to Old Testament anthropology, concentrating on themes of being forsaken by God, enmity, legal difficulties, and sickness. Each chapter defines a problem and considers it in relation to anthropological insights from related fields of study and a thematically relevant example from the Psalms, including how a central aspect of this Psalm is explored in other Old Testament or Ancient Near Eastern texts. Each chapter concludes with an "Anthropological Keyword," which explores especially important words and phrases in the Psalms. The book also includes reflections on reading the Psalms from a New Testament perspective, focusing on themes of transience, praising God, salvation from death, and trust in God. Janowski's study demonstrates how the Psalms have important theological implications and ultimately help us to understand what it means to be human.

This book deals with the development of cities and regions in times of decisive transformation in Europe throughout these past twenty years. In the Western parts of Europe cities and regions were challenged from the outside by globalisation and by technological and demographic change from the inside. On top of that the Eastern parts were confronted with deep restructuring processes enforced by the transition from socialist to capitalistic structures. By now, all European cities and regions are confronted with challenges stemming from a new global competition for jobs, population and status. Authors from different national backgrounds of Central Europe are analysing and reflecting on these changing structures and processes..
Featuring more than 700 superb illustrations, this volume is the first up-to-date correlative imaging text and atlas for the definitive diagnosis of scrotal diseases. The book offers guidance in detecting and evaluating all of the major scrotal diseases, making full use of all clinical imaging modalities--ultrasound (including color Doppler), computed tomography, magnetic resonance imaging, nuclear medicine, and angiography. For each modality, the book provides complete coverage of imaging techniques, describes the specific risks and bioeffects, and identifies common imaging artifacts. Chapters are organized by anatomic site for quick reference, and cover all commonly seen diseases of the scrotum. For each clinical entity, the book considers pertinent epidemiology, associated clinical findings, modality-specific applications, and recommended imaging sequences, and illustrates the pathologic findings seen on images. The final section of the book is a unique self-examination atlas that helps readers test and improve their skills in the analysis of scrotal images. Simulating clinical practice, the atlas presents clinical data from 130 cases. The cases are illustrated with images from which the reader can make his/her own diagnosis and then compare it with the diagnosis given in the text.
