Mounthaven is a multi-layered tale. Four generations and a hundred years of a Virginia family that, having survived the Civil War, acquires a derelict mansion and surrounding acreage called Mounthaven. The year is 1903. The place is already over a century old when Mary Carter Stokes, wife of a failed Yankee gentleman farmer and daughter of Major Moses Carter, late of the Army of Northern Virginia, first sees the property no plumbing, no electricity and the grounds a total disaster -- and it begins to sink in that this is to be where she will eventually die. Thus it becomes the story of Marys elder son, Edmund Carter Stokes and his Yankee but wealthy bride, as Ed, using Mounthaven as a base, struggles to complete the mission laid upon him by his mother-- to restore the family to the place in society it occupied before the war while Eds own son, Carter, flounders to free himself from these very values, for most of which Mounthaven serves as a decaying metaphor.

This study deals with four related topics in Modern French phonology and morphology: (i) the status of nasal vowels, (ii) the nature of [0] - [C] alternations, (iii) the question of final schwas, and (iv) the treatment of h-aspire words. The theoretical framework is that of generative phonology. These topics have already received considerable attention in the context of generative phonology, most notably in the works of Schane, Dell, and Selkirk, but the analyses proposed here constitute a radical departure from the views advocated by these authors.
In 1928, Edgar Snow (1905-1972) set out to see the world, hoping to make his mark as a travel-adventure writer. Shanghai was to be a mere stopover, but Snow stayed on in China for thirteen more years. The idealistic young Midwesterner became a journalist and ultimately developed close friendships with China's emerging revolutionary leaders. This book results from a two-day symposium and three-day workshop held in Cambridge between March 22nd and March 26th 1982 and sponsored by the Primate Society of Great Britain and the Anatomical Society of Great Britain and Ireland. More than 100 primatologists attended the symposium and some 35 were invited to participate in the workshop. Speakers from Prance, Germany, the Netherlands, South Africa and the U. S. A. , as weIl as the U. K. , were invited to contribute. In recent years feeling had strengthened that primatologists in Europe did not gather together sufficiently often. Distinctive tradit ions in primatology have developed in Germany, France, the Netherlands, Italy and the U. K. in particular, and it was feIt that attempts to blend them could only benefit primatology. Furthermore, studies of primate ecology, behaviour, anatomy, physiology and evolution have reached the points where further advances depend on inter-disciplinary collaboration. It was resolved to arrange a regular series of round table discussions on primate biology in Europe at the biennial meeting of the German Society for Anthropology and Human Genetics in Heidel berg in September 1979, where Holger Preuschoft organised sessions on primate ecology and anatomy. In June 1980 Michel Sakka convened a most effective working group in Paris to discuss cranial morphology and evolution. In 1982 it was the turn of the U. K.
