Detectives drink alone. Gangsters talk with their mouths full. Families around the world argue at dinner. Food documentaries challenge popular consumption-centered visions. In Appetites and Anxieties: Food, Film, and the Politics of Representation,authors Cynthia Baron, Diane Carson, and Mark Bernard use a foodways paradigm, drawn from the fields of folklore and cultural anthropology, to illuminate film's cultural and material politics. In looking at how films do and do not represent food procurement, preparation, presentation, consumption, clean-up, and disposal, the authors bring the pleasures, dangers, and implications of consumption to center stage. In nine chapters, Baron, Carson, and Bernard consider food in fiction films and documentaries-from both American and international cinema. The first chapter examines film practice from the foodways perspective, supplying a foundation for the collection of case studies that follow. Chapter 2 takes a political economy approach as it examines the food industry and the film industry's policies that determine representations of food in film. In chapter 3, the authors explore food and food interactions as a means for creating community in Bagdad Café, while in chapter 4 they take a close look at 301/302,in which food is used to mount social critique. Chapter 5 focuses on cannibal films, showing how the foodways paradigm unlocks the implications of films that dramatize one of society's greatest food taboos. In chapter 6, the authors demonstrate ways that insights generated by the foodways lens can enrich genre and auteur studies. Chapter 7 considers documentaries about food and water resources, while chapter 8 examines food documentaries that slip through the cracks of film censorship by going into exhibition without an MPAA rating. Finally, in chapter 9, the authors study films from several national cinemas to explore the intersection of food, gender, and ethnicity. Four appendices provide insights from a food stylist, a selected filmography of fiction films and a filmography of documentaries that feature foodways components, and a list of selected works in food and cultural studies. Scholars of film studies and food studies will enjoy the thought-provoking analysis of Appetites and Anxieties.

Parce que, de Juppé à Sarkozy, ça n'est pas seulement du pain que le Poulpe a sur la planche, c'est une boulangerie entière. De Leyde, duquel aucune revelation, dans le domaine de l'information historique, n'etait a attendre, pour ne s'attacher qu'au premier groupe, a celui qui couvre la periode 1649-1658. Car ces dix annees-Ia corres pondent a la seconde moitie, et meme davantage (dix annees sur dix huit) de la longue et fächeuse lacune que presente le {laquo}manuscrit Sainte-Beuve{raquo}. Soixante-dix-sept lettres, pour la plupart assez etendues, regulierement reparties sur une periode de dix ans, representent un contenu informatif non negligeable. Et leur valeur s'accroit si l'on songe qu'elles sont presque tout ce qui subsiste, et qui soit actuellement connu, d'une production epistolaire perdue qui dut atteindre, en dix-huit ans (1641-1658), quelque deux mille unites. Pourtant leur interet historique n'est pas l'unique raison quijustifie leur publication, et on va voir que sur ces autographes de Leyde peut enfin s'appuyer une veritable etude litteraire du style epistolaire de Chapelain. Le {laquo}manuscrit Sainte-Beuve{raquo} a fait l'objet d'une edition, qui a malheureusement du rester partielle: elle a ete etablie par Ph. Tamizey de Larroque, qui a publie son precieux recueil sous les auspices du Ministere de l'Instruction publique 4.

Nelligan est l’un des rares poètes, sinon le seul, dont il est possible de suivre pas à pas la démarche créatrice. En effet, les nombreux articles de journaux et de revues qui relatent les événements qu’il a vécus, les témoignages à son endroit, ce qu’on a rapporté de ses paroles et ses propres poèmes, lorsqu’ils sont conjugués, permettent non seulement de corriger et de compléter certaines allégations qui ont été avancées à son sujet, mais ils révèlent la remarquable lucidité avec laquelle il a perçu son entourage et l’implacable logique qui a présidé au choix de chacun de ses thèmes. On a, bien sûr, mentionné par le passé l’influence que certains auteurs ont exercée sur lui et on a attiré l’attention sur l’amitié qui le liait à quelques-uns de ses proches, notamment Demers, Lanctôt, Mélançon, Françoise, le père Seers et, d’une façon toute particulière, Arthur de Bussières; mais jamais, jusqu’à ce jour, n’avait-il été démontré en quoi ils avaient infléchi le cours de son destin et de son écriture. On ne savait jusqu’à maintenant quand, pourquoi et comment on en était venu à recourir au mythe de la folie pour justifier l’internement de Nelligan, qui en avait décidé ainsi, dans quel but on a perpétué cette imposture et comment on a décrit et justifié, contre toute logique, l’invraisemblable origine de sa «maladie». Or voici que ce Journal intime vient combler cette lacune, non seulement parce qu’il offre aux inconditionnels de Nelligan l’occasion de reconstituer la trame de son fulgurant parcours, mais aussi parce qu’il met à la disposition de tous les amateurs de poésie un outil pédagogique indispensable pour comprendre les rouages du processus créateur.
