Soft Ground Tunnel Design is a textbook that teaches the principles of tunnel and underground space design in soft ground. ‘Soft ground’ refers to soil, in contrast to rock. The book focuses on stability, prediction of ground movements and structural design of the lining. It shows that the choice of excavation and support methods depends on ground stability; limitation of damage to the existing built environment; and health, safety and environmental considerations. Author Benoît Jones builds on the basic principles of soil-structure interaction, the three-dimensional effects of construction sequence and the effects of construction on other surface or subsurface structures in steps of gradually increasing complexity. The use of worked examples throughout, and example problems at the end of each chapter, gives the reader confidence to apply their knowledge. Engineers and graduate students will be able to: • Understand the complex soil-structure interaction around an advancing tunnel. • Calculate heading stability. • Understand the basis for choosing an underground construction method and/or ground improvement method. • Design tunnel linings in soft ground using a variety of methods. • Predict ground movements. • Predict the effects of construction on the built environment and assess potential damage. Benoît Jones has worked in tunnelling as a designer, contractor and academic for more than 20 years. He set up and ran the MSc Tunnelling and Underground Space course at the University of Warwick. He is now managing director of his own company, Inbye Engineering.

Benoit and his colleagues apply the functional theory of political campaign discourse to 25 presidential primary debates beginning with the 1948 American presidential primary campaign. They conclude with the 2000 presidential primaries. They identify the functions, topics, and targets of attacks, and the results are compared with research on primary TV spots and with general debates. An important resource for scholars and students of American presidential and party elections and political communications.
Bush versus Kerry analyzes the 2004 presidential campaign using the functional theory of political campaign communication. After an introduction and explication of political campaign communication theory, chapters investigate the content of candidate messages - for example, television spots, debates, webpages, and acceptance addresses - and media coverage of the campaign.
This textbook presents the core of recent advances in design theory and its implications for design methods and design organization. Providing a unified perspective on different design methods and approaches, from the most classic (systematic design) to the most advanced (C-K theory), it offers a unique and integrated presentation of traditional and contemporary theories in the field. Examining the principles of each theory, this guide utilizes numerous real life industrial applications, with clear links to engineering design, industrial design, management, economics, psychology and creativity. Containing a section of exams with detailed answers, it is useful for courses in design theory, engineering design and advanced innovation management. "Students and professors, practitioners and researchers in diverse disciplines, interested in design, will find in this book a rich and vital source for studying fundamental design methods and tools as well as the most advanced design theories that work in practice". Professor Yoram Reich, Tel Aviv University, Editor-in-Chief, Research In Engineering Design. "Twenty years of research in design theory and engineering have shown that training in creative design is indeed possible and offers remarkably operational methods - this book is indispensable for all leaders and practitioners who wish to strengthen theinnovation capacity of their company." Pascal Daloz, Executive Vice President, Dassault Systèmes
This textbook originated from the course 'Simulation, Modeling, and Computations in Biophysics' that I have taught at the University of Chicago since 2011. The students typically came from a wide range of backgrounds, including biology, physics, chemistry, biochemistry, and mathematics, and the course was intentionally adapted for senior undergraduate students and graduate students. This is not a highly technical book dedicated to specialists. The objective is to provide a broad survey from the physical description of a complex molecular system at the most fundamental level, to the type of phenomenological models commonly used to represent the function of large biological macromolecular machines. The key conceptual elements serving as building blocks in the formulation of different levels of approximations are introduced along the way, aiming to clarify as much as possible how they are interrelated. The only assumption is a basic familiarity with simple mathematics (calculus and integrals, ordinary differential equations, matrix linear algebra, and Fourier-Laplace transforms).
An area that was once defined and governed as one large parish, Imperial Calcasieu is now divided into five separate parishes: Calcasieu, Cameron, Allen, Beauregard, and Jefferson Davis. The common history shared by these communities is brought to life through vintage images in this fascinating collection of memories. Included in Imperial Calcasieu are photographs depicting the early railroads built in the area, the development of sulphur mining, the transporting of lumber along the Calcasieu River, the rich oil fields, and the rice industry that developed on the coastal prairies of Western Louisiana. This volume also recalls several memorable events, such as the hurricane of 1918 and the Great Lake Charles Fire of 1910. The pioneer settlers and community leaders who shaped the identity of Imperial Calcasieu are celebrated within these pages, and both their triumphs and setbacks will continue to teach and inspire future generations.

Governments and researchers from industrial countries have been measuring science and technology for more than seventy years. This book provides an historical examination of official science and technology statistics and indicators in Western countries and addresses the following questions: What were the main historical moments that led to the development of statistics on science and technology? What were the main socio-political stakes behind the activities of science measurement? What were the philosophical and ideological conceptions that drove measurement? What statistics and indicators were developed and how were they constructed? The first part of the book concentrates on the construction and development of science and technology statistics from 1930 to the present, the principles at work, and the vested interests and forces behind that construction. The second part analyzes to what uses statistics were put, and with how much confidence actors used statistics to document their case or to promote their political agenda.

Despite recent optimism and global initiatives, the implementation of corporate sustainability programs has been slow at best, with less than a third of global companies having developed a clear business case for their approach to sustainability. Presenting numerous award-winning cases and examples from companies such as Unilever, Patagonia, Tumi, DSM and Umicore alongside original ideas based upon 20 years of consulting experience, this book reveals how to design and implement a stronger sense of focus and move sustainability programs forward. This proven combination of purpose, direction and speed is dubbed “Vectoring”. Based upon practitioner cases and data analysis from the Dow Jones Sustainability Index, Vectoring offers a plain-spoken framework to identify the relative position of companies compared to their peers. The framework and its 4 archetypes deliver insights for practitioners to locate inhibitors and overcome them by providing practical suggestions for process improvements. This includes designing and executing new sustainability programs, embedding the SDGs within company strategy and assessing the impact of sustainability programs on competitiveness and valuation. Offering directions for CFOs to shift companies from integrated reporting to integrated thinking in order to accelerate their sustainability programs, Winning Sustainability Strategies shows how to achieve purpose with profit and how to do well by doing good.

In this volume, emphasis is placed on contributions to the study of argumentation by scholars from communication, speech communication, rhetoric, and discourse analysis. So far, their work has been insufficiently represented in anthologies, overviews and readers. William Benoit, Dale Hample, and Pamela Benoit have made efforts to correct the imbalance by filling in the gap. In our opinion, they have succeeded in compounding an excellent selection of classical highlights from modern literature in the field. For scholars, the books provides a rich source of information and references. -- Pref. (p. [xi]-xii).

We in the Ulysses offices think we have it hard when deadlines are approaching, those maps still don't quite fit and the sidewalk cafes and bars of St. Denis Street here in Montreal beckon on warm summer evenings. But our desk-bound troubles are minuscule compared to the harried experiences our authors endure creating the "most cultural how-to travel guides" available: wading through crowds of revelers in Chicago after the Bulls Championship win, dodging chickens and dogs on Nicaraguan highways, getting mugged in Nassau and Lisbon, or being stranded by a train derailment in Saskatchewan. Then again, these adventurers are part of the joy of traveling, of getting to the heart of a destination ... This second edition now includes the province of Newfoundland and Labrador along with New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, and Prince Edward Island. Picturesque fishing villages, the Cabot Trail, national parks, beaches, and the brand new Confederation Bridge linking Prince Edward Island to the mainland.
