The state of Israel was established in 1948 as a Jewish democracy, without a legal separation between religion and the state. Ever since, the tension between the two has been a central political, social, and moral issue in Israel, resulting in a cultural conflict between secular Jews and the fundamentalist, ultra-orthodox Haredi community. This book is the first major sociological analysis of the characteristics and interrelationships of ethnicity, religion, and socio-economic class in Israeli society. The authors include categories largely overlooked in sociological studies on Israel such as middle class Israelis from Asia and Africa, and working-class Israelis from Europe. In it, he interprets unpublished and recently published texts by Jeremy Bentham (1748-1832), first reconstructing the most general argument about Bentham's legal and political thought as a founder of utilitarianism, and then analyzing Bentham's work within the context of contemporary debates in legal and political philosophy. He concludes that the technical and reductionist methodology associated with utilitarianism don't do justice to the theory, which identifies the maximization of pleasure as the most fundamental self-interest guiding people. Although Wolfgang Iser is one of the most influential literary theorists of the twentieth century, there is no authoritative study about his oeuvre. The present work remedies that problem by analysing Iser’s German and English writings in detail. Apart from being the first comprehensive account of his work, this study also modifies the established view of Iser’s theory. In contrast to the idea that his only contribution to literary studies is the reception theory of the 1970s, this account demonstrates the importance of Iser’s work on history and anthropology from the 1950s and 1990s. Instead of exclusively focusing on familiar terms such as ‘indeterminacy’, this analysis also discusses Iser’s view of modernity, fiction and culture. As this discussion shows, his writings develop a consistent theory of the novel and the way in which it allows its readers to articulate new views of reality. To situate this theory, Iser’s institutional and intellectual background is described as well, paying special attention to the Poetik und Hermeneutik-circle and thinkers like Blumenberg and Kermode. This work studies aspects of the symbolic construction of public spaces by means of linguistic resources (i.e. linguistic landscapes or LLs) in a number of world-cities. The sociology of language leads us to this field and to study the intermingling impacts of globalization, the national principle and multiculturalism – each one conveying its own distinct linguistic markers: international codes, national languages and ethnic vernaculars. Eliezer and Miriam Ben-Rafael study the configurations of these influences, which they conceptualize as multiple globalization, in the LLs of downtowns, residential quarters, and marginal neighborhoods of a number of world-cities. They ask how far worldwide codes of communication gain preeminence, national languages are marginalized and ethnic vernaculars impactful. They conclude by suggesting a paradigm of multiple globalizations.
The Pataphysician’s Library is a study of aspects of 1890s French literature, with specific reference to the traditions of Symbolism and Decadence. The greatest interest of the livres pairs lies in a group of works by Jarry’s friends and contemporaries, primarily Leon Bloy, Georges Darien, Gustave Kahn, Catulle Mendes, Josephin Madan, Rachilde, and Henri de Regnier. Several of these authors feature as the lords of islands visited by the pataphysician Dr Faustroll in his curious voyage around Paris. In conjunction with Jarry’s own works, the contemporary livres pairs serve to illustrate the vibrant and experimental atmosphere in which these authors worked.
“Waarheen nou...???”, means “Where to now...???” This book is about: The road of truth and untruth, are eternally running alongside each other. Untruth or falsehood being ‘the truth + 1’ or ‘the truth - 1’. Almost always, the same. Often, unrecognizable from the real truth! The author was spoken to, from Above! He was taught by The Creator Himself and the set-apart Spirit. He was ordained to write this book, to guide the lost sons & daughters, back to the Fatherhouse. As tracker, shepherd and guide, he must prepare the way, like John the Baptist, for the people, to be ready as “spotless bride”, for the second coming of our Messiah. The people must be led back on the original track, to follow in their Master’s footsteps. As physically in Old Testament times, now spiritually. The general theme in the book is: “The second exodus out of Babylon.” Faith alone, is not enough! Without obedience, faith cannot suffice! If Abraham, the ‘Father of Faith’, just believed, would we still acknowledge him as ‘idol’? It is in fact because of his obedience, that we can honor him, as a true believer! Very important to sort out in your own life: “Surely you know that when you surrender yourselves as slaves to obey someone, you are in fact the slaves of the master you obey---either of sin, which results in death, or of obedience, which results in being put right with God.” (Rom.6:16) According to Mat.7:14 (KJV) the following: “Because strait is the gate, and narrow is the way, which leadeth unto life, and few there are that find it.” Good News Bible states it more describing: “But the gate to life is narrow and the way that leads to it is hard, and there are few people who find it.” Many people are ‘happy-go-lucky’ fellows or ‘devil-may-care’ guys, on the highway. They must be led back, before going totally astray! An escalator only has two directions; up or down. If you want to go UP, there is no place for a ‘highway’ or ‘my-way’; only “Thy way”! The author, also known as ‘errand boy’ or ‘messenger’, must share what he was shown. He must tell what he heard, because: “...faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of Elohim.” (Rom.10:17) He must tell, lead and encourage the people to find the whole truth and do the right deeds, and make a ‘u-turn’, to get on to the right track. See what Psalm 53:3&4 says: “Elohim looks down from heaven at people to see if there are any who are wise, any who worship Him. But they have all turned away; they are all equally bad. Not one of them does what is right, not a single one.” (GNB) Or according to KJV: “to see if there were any that did understand, that did seek Elohim. Every one of them is gone back: they are altogether become filthy; there is none that doeth good, no, not one.” The road is not easy! It is a 4X4 adventure, through the desert, not an easy ‘highway-to-heaven’, as we know it! The people have been misled, either knowingly or unknowingly. They have been tricked to take the highway or sideway, the easy way. The full truth and right way, have been disguised, ignored, twisted and concealed on purpose. Many a time, through ‘intentional’, cunning, translation “mistakes”. In Scripture, in 2Corintians 11:12, we are warned: “Even Satan can disguise himself to look like an angel of light!” & “And no marvel; for Satan himself is transformed into an angel of light.” The deception is allowed by The Almighty, because of His people’s unfaithfulness and idolatry. (Isa.43:28 & 44:18, Eze.12:2 & Mat.13:14) He ‘blindfolded’ many, because of their rebellion against Him and His commandments. He will allow this temporary ‘blindness & deafness’, until we humble ourselves and turn back to Him, as Creator of heaven and earth, and acknowledge His Name, as set apart and above all names. According to 2Chron.7:14, He promised: “If My people, which are called by My Name, shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek My face, and turn from their wicked ways; then will I hear from heaven, and will forgiv

In ancient times people were awestruck by singular geophysical events, which were attributed to supernatural powers. It was recognized only in 1760 that earthquakes originated within the earth. A hundred years later, first systematic attempts were made to apply physical principles to study them. During the next century scientists accumulated knowledge about the effects of earthquakes, their geographic patterns, the waves emitted by them, and the internal constitution of the earth. During the past 20 years, seismology has made a tremendous progress, mainly because of the advent of modern computers and improvements in data acquisi tion systems, which are now capable of digital and analog recording of ground motion over a frequency range of five orders of magnitude. These technologic developments have enabled seismologists to make measurements with far greater precision and sophistication than was previously possible. Advanced computational analyses have been applied to high-quality data and elaborate theoretical models have been devised to interpret them. As a result, far reaching advances in our knowledge of the earth's structure and the nature of earthquake sources have occurred.
