This book is a manual for self-application of the Attachment-Based Compassion Therapy (ABCT) protocol, that can be either self-applied by any individual in a psychoeducational context or as a support for a therapeutic process guided by a professional. Compassion therapy is a third-generation psychotherapy that has been used in association with mindfulness in recent years. In particular, attachment-based compassion therapy (ABCT) is a protocol that can be used in both the general and psychiatric population with the aim of promoting compassion and self-compassion. ABCT is based on attachment theory and, therefore, includes practices to raise awareness and/or address maladaptive aspects, where appropriate, of the attachment styles developed with parents. This process is taught as a form of both compassion and self-compassion in order to improve present-day interpersonal relationships and well-being in general. In the face-to-face group format, ABCT has been demonstrating efficacy and applicability for healthy people and for the treatment of fibromyalgia, depression, anxiety and adjustment disorders. This book presents a self-applied version of ABCT that operates along the lines of the original model and has been adapted and developed to be fully self-applied via the Internet in 8 sequential modules: Introduction to attachment-based compassion therapy Preparing ourselves for compassion: kind attention Discovering our compassionate world Developing our compassionate world Understanding our relationship with compassion Working on ourselves Understanding the importance of forgiveness Consolidating the practice of compassion The content is presented through texts, pictures, tables and figures, including links to downloadable audio files for formal meditation practices with specific guides and instruction for each meditation. The transcripts to each guided meditation are also included as appendices.

Proteins are considered supremely important for the organization, survival, and functioning of living organisms. They were considered stable and static molecules until the early 1940s, when RudolphSchoenheimer demonstrated that proteins exist in a constant dynamic process of synthesis and degradation (proteostasis), absolutely essential for life. Since then, general and limited protein degradation became some of the most fascinating aspects of biological sciences. This book is focused on a particular aspect of protein degradation, namely, limited proteolysis, which gives rise to bioactive peptides as a result of the enzymatic action of proteinases and peptidases, which are enzymes that hydrolyze specific peptide bonds of proteins and peptides, respectively. In a broad sense, bioactive peptides are any fragment of endogenous or exogenous proteins able to elicit either physiological or pathological activities. Here, we aim at presenting to the readers that bioactive peptides are not merely produced through random processes during protein degradation, but rather through a well-organized enzymatic process that is deeply integrated in the homeostatic processes of living organisms. The Nature of Hate and the Hatred of Nature in Hispanic Literatures retraces the “nature of hatred” and the “hatred of nature” from the earliest traditions of Western literature including Biblical texts, Medieval Spanish literature, early Spanish Renaissance texts, to nineteenth- and twentieth-century Iberian and Latin American literatures. The nature of hate is neither hate in its weakened form, as in disliking or loving less, nor hate in its righteous form, as in “I hate hatred,” rather hate in its primal form as told and conveyed in so many culturally influential Bible stories that are at the root of hatred as it manifests itself today. The hatred of nature is not only contempt for the natural world, but also the idea of nature hating in return, thus inspiring even more hatred of nature. While some chapters, such as the one dedicated to La Celestina, focus more on the nature of hate and the hatred of love, they do address the hatred of nature, as when Celestina conjures Pluto, who happens to be closer to nature than to Satan. Other chapters, such as the ones dedicated to the Latin American novels set in the jungle, focus more on the hatred of nature but ultimately turn to the nature of hatred by analyzing hatred and the descent into madness. In the final chapters Beatriz Rivera-Barnes simultaneously addresses the nature of hatred and the hatred of nature as well as the ecophilia/ecophobia debate in twentieth-century Latin American literatures and considers, if not an assimilation of hate, possibly the cannibalizing of hate.
