The purpose of this monograph is to review the known physical aspects of two unusual forms of atmospheric luminous phenomena, to deduce their characteristics and properties, and to promote efforts to improve their understanding. These two forms, called ball lightning and bead lightning, have visual images that differ from the linear image associated with normallightning. The terms "balliightning" and "bead lightning" are used to denote atmospheric luminous forms which are occasionally observed and have the geometrie shape suggested by their name. Vet, it is possible that neither phenomenon may in fact be a form of lightning in the sense of a continuous electrical discharge. Bead lightning has been described as the residue of a cloud-to cloud or cloud-to-ground lightning stroke and has the appearance of aseries of luminous balls separated by dark regions, thus resembling astring of pearls, and remains visible for about one second. Ball lightning has been described as a single luminous globe appearing ne ar the ground after a lightning stroke and also remaining visible for about one second. Both phenomena remain visible far longer than normal lightning flashes.

This book traces the history of the Richardson Light Guard of Wakefield, Massachusetts, from its origins in 1851 until its end in 1975. What had been an institution of community members and local elites passed to town, then state, and finally federal government. During the same period, Wakefield evolved from an agrarian town to a manufacturing town and finally to a bedroom suburb, ending the practice of a handful of local elites ruling the town unchallenged. Though the rise of the National Guard was generally positive, for some militia companies, inclusion in the National Guard weakened vital bonds with their communities. In the 19th century, the Richardson Light Guard thrived under generous patrons, a supportive town, and a relatively wealthy state government. After becoming part of the National Guard in 1916, the links with its home community steadily weakened, finally breaking during World War II. After the war, the National Guard company had few links to Wakefield and was reorganized out of existence in 1975.

Radon is a radioactive gas of geologic origin that is an environmental concern because of its link to lung cancer. Radon is derived from the decay of uranium, and can accumulate indoors in sufficient quantities to pose a health hazard to building occupants. Although the influence of non-geologic factors such as construction type, lifestyle, and weather is difficult to measure, geologic factors that influence indoor-radon levels can be quantified to assess the hazard potential. Geologic factors that influence indoor-radon levels have been studied for three areas in northern Utah to indicate where indoor radon may be a hazard and radon-resistant techniques should be considered in new construction. The three areas include the lower Weber River area in Davis and Weber Counties, Tooele Valley in Tooele County, and southeastern Cache Valley in Cache County. These areas all lie in the depositional basin of Pleistocene Lake Bonneville, and display common geologic characteristics which affect their potential for radon hazards. A numerical rating system was used to assess and map the relative radon-hazard potential in the three study areas. A high-hazard potential was typically found along range fronts where uranium concentrations are higher, ground water is deep, and soils are permeable. Although soil-gas and indoor-radon concentrations broadly correlate to mapped hazard potential, the correlation is imperfect because of atmospheric contamination of soil-gas samples, the presence of locally anomalous concentrations of radon which are beyond the resolution of the sampling grid or map scale, and the effects of non-geologic factors which are not considered in this geologic assessment. 56 pages + 1 plate
