Mixed Harvest explores rural responses to the transformation of the northern United States from an agricultural society into an urban and industrial one. According to Hal S. Barron, country people from New England to North Dakota negotiated the rise of large-scale organizational society and consumer culture in ways marked by both resistance and accommodation, change and continuity. Between 1870 and 1930, communities in the rural North faced a number of challenges. Reformers and professionals sought to centralize authority and diminish local control over such important aspects of rural society as schools and roads; large-scale business corporations wielded increasing market power, to the detriment of independent family farmers; and an encroaching urban-based consumer culture threatened rural beliefs in the primacy of their local communities and the superiority of country life. But, Barron argues, by reconfiguring traditional rural values of localism, independence, republicanism, and agrarian fundamentalism, country people successfully created a distinct rural subculture. Consequently, agrarian society continued to provide a counterpoint to the dominant trends in American society well into the twentieth century.

Based on in-depth interviews with clients with severe mental illness, this volume explores which structures of interaction encourage growth for people with severe mental illness, and which trigger psychological damage. It considers the clients’ relationships with friends, family, peers, spouses, lovers, co-workers, mental health professionals, institutions, the community, and the society as a whole. It focuses specifically on how structures of social interaction can promote or harm psychological growth, and how interaction dynamics affect the psychological well-being of individuals with severe mental illness.

Reviews of patients' case notes indicate that in the NHS and in other healthcare systems as many as 10 per cent of patients admitted to hospital suffer some form of harm, much of which is avoidable. Tens of thousands of patients suffer unnecessary harm each year and there is a huge cost to the NHS in consequence. This report examines the implementation of safety policy since 2000. That policy has focused on the creation of a unified national mechanism for reporting and analysing incidents, underpinned by a new culture of openness in the NHS. Systems for reporting, and learning from, incidents, were established, centred on the National Reporting and Learning System (NRLS) and the National Patient Safety Agency (NPSA). The Committee finds areas where policy has failed, barriers to change and other reasons for slow progress. It recommends several changes that need to be made in order for there to be further progress in tackling unsafe care. The recommendations are in the areas of: measurement and evaluation; harmed patients and their families or carers; creating a more open, reporting and learning NHS; more patient safety at the front line in the NHS; greater use of technologies to improve care; improvements in the education and training curricula; commissioning by Primary Care Trusts, performance management and regulation; the role of managers and boards; and the role of the Department of Health and Government.

Instrumentation updates include types of sensors and the concept of "smart" devices such as meters.
