Phase Theory is the latest empirical and conceptual innovation in syntactic theory within the Chomskyan generative tradition. Adopting a cross-linguistic perspective, this book provides an introduction to Phase Theory, tracing the development of phases in minimalist syntax. It reviews both empirical and theoretical arguments in favor of phases, and examines the role phases play at the interface with semantics and phonology. Analyzing current phasehood diagnostics, it applies them in a systematic fashion to a broad range of syntactic categories, both phases and non-phases. It concludes with a discussion of some of the more contentious issues in Phase Theory, involving cross-linguistic variation with respect to phasehood and the dynamic versus static nature of phases.
With time travel and mysteries that need solving, the Galactic Academy of Science (G.A.S.) series instructs readers on how to think like scientists. Under the guidance of a Dude or Dudette from the future, the middle school characters are faced with treacherous, present-day crimes that require a historical knowledge of science in order to be solved. From investigating problems to analyzing data and constructing explanations and solutions, this series blends elements of sci-fi with educational methods that distill the key thinking habits of scientists and engineers. An adventure that investigates the causes and consequences of climate change Something strange is going on during Anita and Benson’s field trip to a greenhouse as their guide is making wild claims about carbon dioxide and their science teacher, Mr. Fazmel, has mysteriously disappeared. That’s when Quarkum Phonon, a Dude from the future, sends Anita and Benson on a Galactic Academy of Science mission to learn about the origins of climate change and the ways communities around the world are dealing with its impact. With stops around the world—from a Hawaiian volcano to Greenland and Geneva—Anita and Benson sift through the evidence for climate change. On their return home, the students face the question: what can a couple of kids do to reduce CO2 emissions and slow down climate change? A portion of all profits from this book will go to support local projects helping people in the developing world adapt to climate change.

From the moment that we are born, our lives are molded into different shapes. We take the shape that our family background gives us, and different life experiences either add or deduct from that shape that we were initially given. Over the years, life, too, teaches us many lessons, and these lessons contribute greatly to whom we become, whether good or bad. These lessons are not just for us; however, if shared, they have the potential to improve the lives of others. SHAPED was written to inspire its readers as they glean from a few life lessons on survival, resilience, and finding one's voice in this constantly rushing world. Written during the time of the great COVID-19 pandemic, SHAPED offers insight into the different journeys taken by the author; be from being a child born a refugee, becoming a refugee herself, returning to Rwanda, and building her life back home, all of which, indeed "shaped" her to become the person she is today. In reflecting on her past, present, and hopes for the future, the chapters written across the pages of this book will transport you to an introspective space where you will look at your own life and appreciate it all, for, indeed, in appreciating where far we have come from, do we envision where far we want to go. Everyone has a story to tell, a story of what happened to them and a story of how each of those experiences shaped them. For Barbara, it is all in the book SHAPED. It is her hope that the pages of this book will inspire, motivate and encourage you in one way or another and, above all else, help you reflect on your journey, mourn the pain away, celebrate the joys, and dream of the possibilities that the future holds.
