Historically affirming certain post-WWII constructive theologians and social theorists, After Christendom unpacks theological anomalies negatively denying the science underlying global warming, wedge issues supporting systemic racism, and certain erroneous decisions made by mainline churches and the evangelical movement. Anomalies occur when something taken for granted no longer fits current situations. The so-called mainline church and the evangelical movement have not addressed or reconstructed their theological anomalies. Caught inside cultural accommodation, the more liberal mainline church often does not recognize its historical tie to a pre-modern God, a transactional definition of the crucifixion, and Jesus’ consignment to the cross. A companion argument suggests that the evangelical movement’s inability to respond to the pre-modern depiction of God as an omnipotent, theocratic King helped provide sufficient votes for Trump’s successful presidential run. Both groups inability to face such theological anomalies rests within a belief in conservative originalism, an unwillingness to move beyond European Christendom’s earliest theological constructions. Is it possible to write an artistically respectable and theoretically convincing religious novel in a non-religious age? Up to now, there has been no substantial application of theological criticism to the works of Hugh MacLennan and Morley Callaghan, the two most important Canadian novelists before 1960. Yet both were religious writers during the period when Canada entered the modern, non-religious era, and both greatly influenced the development of our literature. MacLennan’s journey from Calvinism to Christian existentialism is documented in his essays and seven novels, most fully in The Watch that Ends the Night. Callaghan’s fourteen novels are marked by tensions in his theology of Catholic humanism, with his later novels defining his theological themes in increasingly secular terms. This tension between narrative and metanarrative has produced both the artistic strengths and the moral ambiguities that characterize his work. Faith and Fiction: A Theological Critique of the Narrative Strategies of Hugh MacLennan and Morley Callaghan is a significant contribution to the relatively new field studying the relation between religion and literature in Canada.
The Bible has been written, translated, and interpreted for centuries by men in cultures that were patriarchal. In patriarchy, women are subordinated within the gradations of a hierarchical society. Material on women, therefore has often been misinterpreted or overlooked. In some instances, generic nouns and pronouns in the original languages have been translated into English as masculine words. A careful textual study must be made using all the available tools of biblical scholarship. An accurate understanding of the meaning of words must be sought. Also, readers must try to discern the intentions of the author and try to gain a knowledge of the historical and social background of the biblical material. The demands of God must be distinguished from the demands of a particular culture. The bible as a whole makes it clear that God's people are to bring justice and wholeness to all human beings. the injunctions that degrade women do not provide principles valid for every age of Christianity but instead reflect cultural situations in which men related to women through dominance. The standard for the Christian community today should be the glimmers of female dignity and leadership that shine through the pages of the Bible.
