Devenport Naval Base, New Zealand, 1962: With her husband away at sea, Sophie Flynn’s life is becoming considerably complicated. She has two children to look after, the captain’s wife to minister to, a wayward sister to keep an eye on, and an elderly neighbor to nurse. As if that wasn’t enough, Sophie falls in love with the commodore, adding a volatile element to the mix. This romantic novel—spiked with a dash of feminism—offers deeply perceptive observations of married life.
Anne Langton (1804-1893) arrived in Upper Canada in 1837 to join her brother John on his settler farm near Fenelon Falls, Ontario. An accomplished miniaturist, landscape artist, and writer, Langton documented ten years of family and community hardship and growth in her journals, letters, and art, and traced her own physical and psychological transformation from cultivated Englishwoman to hard-working pioneer settler. She became an exceptionally influential member of the community, developing the first school and library in the area, ministering to the sick, undertaking charitable work, and hosting community events, all the while continuing to record her reactions to her new world in her writing and artwork. First published in 1950, A Gentlewoman in Upper Canada is a classic work of early pioneering literature. This new, significantly expanded edition includes many of Langton's original illustrations and reveals Langton's views on writing, art, and women's social and familial roles in nineteenth-century Europe and Canada. In her extensive introduction, Barbara Williams contextualizes Langton's life and work and reflects on them in light of current scholarship in life writing, art history, and early emigrant, cultural, and social history. This is the definitive edition of Anne Langton's important text.

There has been an increasing interest in the meaning and importance of friendship in recent years, particularly in the West. However, the history of friendship, and the ways in which it has changed over time, have rarely been examined. Friendship: A History traces the development of friendship in Europe from the Hellenistic period to today. The book brings together a range of essays that examine the language of friendship and its significance in terms of ethics, social institutions, religious organizations and political alliances. The essays study the works of classical and contemporary authors to explore the role of friendship in Western philosophy. Ranging from renaissance friendships to Christian and secular friendships and from women’s writing to the role of class and sex in friendships, Friendship: A History will be invaluable to students and scholars of social history.
We are all instilled with principles, passed down through generations, that guide our feelings and behaviors. Women often feel immense pressure to live up to preconceived standards when taking on the roles of wife, partner or mother. The drive to meet expectations can lead to a sense of lost individuality and feelings of isolation and invisibility. This book serves as a guide through the "muse process," which encourages women to explore their innate feminine power to reach their full potential and create a happier, healthier life.
A tale of a woman’s romantic entanglements with two anthropologists—and the odd mating habits of humans—from the author of Jane and Prudence. Catherine Oliphant writes for women’s magazines and lives comfortably with anthropologist Tom Mallow—although she’s starting to wonder if they’ll ever get married. Then Tom drops his bombshell: He’s leaving her for a nineteen-year-old student. Though stunned by Tom’s betrayal, Catherine quickly becomes fascinated by another anthropologist, Alaric Lydgate, a reclusive eccentric recently returned from Africa. As Catherine starts to weigh her options, she must figure out who she is and what she really wants. With a lively cast of characters and a witty look at the insular world of academia, this novel from the much-loved author of Excellent Women and other modern classics is filled with poignant, playful observations about the traits that separate us from our anthropological forebears—far fewer than we may imagine.

Finally, she introduces us to informal and formal practices to unlock love in our lives, generate compassion, and even self-soothe. This anthology demonstrates the richness and diversity of the American intellectual heritage. In it we see how Jonathan Edwards grapples with the problem of how to reconcile freedom and responsibility with Calvinist religious beliefs; how Franklin and Jefferson exemplified American enlightenment thought; and how the Transcendentalists, Ralph Waldo Emerson and Henry David Thoreau, formulated their particular romantic idealist beliefs. A second and significant portion of the anthology is devoted to Pragmatism. Substantive excerpts from Peirce, James and Dewey, as well as Royce, are collected here. A third part is devoted to other Twentieth-Century American philosophies. No other collection of writings in this field includes the breadth of coverage that this one does. Among the chapters in this third part of the book are those on early Process Philosophy, Phenomenology, Positivism, and Language Philosophies. Selections from such philosophers as Whitehead, Weiss, Buchler, Gurwitsch, Sellars, Quine, Davidson, and Rawls, along with many others are included in this part. A final chapter is devoted to twentieth-century American Moral Philosophy. The book is specifically designed to be used as a text for courses in American philosophy. A substantive introduction that emphasizes the historical setting as well as major interests and ideas of the philosophers accompanies each chapter. Extensive bibliographies and study guide questions follow each chapter. The selections include more than any one course will cover, but in their completeness also allow individual teachers and readers to select what they want.

This first full length study of Quakers Charity and Thomas Rotch, early New England settlers to northeast Ohio (1811–1824) explores their role in the transformation of the frontier environment from wilderness to a prosperous market town. The book utilizes a wide selection of archival sources to provide insights into early community building in Ohio. The letters of Charity Rotch suggest that Quaker women forged particular sorts of relationships that encouraged their interconnections and interdependence. Women also recognized the significance of gender in their lives as they defined themselves collectively as women. The vocabulary and the cultural grammar that women used to reinforce kinship ties were crucial to building and maintain their faith communities over extended geographic distances. This book will be of interest to scholars of early Ohio economic history and development, Quaker history and settlement in Ohio, gender, and the household in 19th century American history.

My People: The Story of a Virginia Family presents the history of Barbara Newman's American ancestors -- from the earliest colonists who came to Richmond, Charlottesville, and the Shenandoah Valley more than three hundred years ago, to their descendants who fought, suffered, and died for the Confederacy in the nineteenth century. Her twentieth-century grandparents and parents prospered in the Roaring Twenties, endured the calamity of the Great Depression, then gave their all to the Second World War and the Korean Conflict. Newman also brings to life the African-Americans, first under slavery and then under Jim Crow segregation, who worked for her ancestors. Slave-owning planters and poor white farmers, enslaved and free black people, soldiers, lawyers, clerks, teachers, seamstresses, and housewives -- all their stories are included in this rich history of Newman's Virginia ancestors.

Frances Louisa Goodrich contributed her Allanstand Shop so that families living in an already depressed region would have a sales venue for their work throughout the Great Depression and the years of World War II. From that early start, the Southern Highland Craft Guild has grown to nearly a thousand members and has established a worldwide reputation for fine workmanship. The guild is governed by the artist membership, which is made up of a wide range of craftspeople from institute-trained artists to local makers trained by parents and friends.

In the World Library of Psychologists series, international experts present career-long collections of what they judge to be their finest work—extracts from books, key articles, salient research findings and their major theoretical and practical contributions. This volume of self-selected papers recognises Professor Barbara A. Wilson's major contribution to the study of neuropsychology. Published over a 25-year period, the papers included here address the assessment, treatment and evaluation of rehabilitation provided to people who have memory difficulties arising from an injury or illness affecting the brain. This selection of papers includes work on errorless learning, the natural history of the development of compensatory memory systems, paging systems developed to enhance independent daily living for memory impaired people and single-case experimental designs to appraise the response of individual patients. The final section includes a practical framework for understanding compensatory behaviour, a model of cognitive rehabilitation and a discussion of the dilemmas created by the different aims of neuroscience as opposed to those of clinicians. This book will be of great interest to clinical psychologists, neuropsychologists, occupational therapists and speech and language therapists, along with anyone who is interested in reducing the impact of memory problems on people who have suffered brain injury.
