CAUTION This book may introduce you to the stark realities of a modern-day pilgrim who seeks the fuller life at the feet of Jesus. No pat answers. No attempt to resolve the mysterious interface between God's will and his willingness to let us muddle through the mess of life. The author tells the simple but engaging story of her struggles, aspirations, frustrations, and satisfaction of walking with Jesus the best that she could. Don't be annoyed at her humanity¯accept it as a humble gift and insight into your own experience. Barb brings us fascinating insights into the different stages of her faith's development and a challenge to reflect upon our own. Certainly good food for great thoughts! Rev. Stephen W. Chaloner, B.Th M.T.S. Regional Director PAOC Africa ----------------------------------------------------------- As I read through this book I kept thinking that this evolution should be read and even studied as a reflection, which is necessary for a person entering the ministry. As Wilson shares her life, family, and ministry events and memories, she has taken the opportunity to openly expose her experiences centered against the backdrop of the seven life stages of recurrent development (1) in the context of her Faith walk. The transparency is refreshing, when in my reading, I found that generally speaking, clergies have a hard time sharing openly their life experiences. Wilson, in her book, encourages pastors, ministers, and clergies to come clean as we live and preach and teach in our respective contexts. By the "storytelling" of her life and faith development, she has given the reader a glimpse of her faith and relationship with Jesus Christ and how this relates to family, friends, community, and ministry interaction with other people; thus, allowing the reader to face life with hope. I would recommend anyone entering a ministry in any context to read this book in order to gain an appreciation of what shapes a ministry and some ways of processing our lived experiences, and forgiving ourselves for our sins and shortcomings. Thank you, Barbara, for giving us your readers, insights from a distance in the "Making of a Pastor/Chaplain" (1) Robert Kegan, "The Evolving Self, Problem and Process in Human Development." Phillip J. Robillard, Minister of "Faith Community" in downtown Toronto, Ontario. ----------------------------------------------------------- Sometimes, we may take the events of our lives for granted; and, we may be lulled into leaving well enough alone, even though deep down we have a sense that something is missing or not quite right. At other times, we may thirst for a greater depth of meaning in what we are about. As we examine our lives, we may become more aware of experiences, good or bad, associated with past, present or foreseen events. What we may be less aware of, in the moment, is the part we can play in shaping our personal experience of whatever takes place into a more satisfying life journey. This book illustrates how the author, Barbara Wilson, reflected deeply on pivotal life events which, if left unexamined, would have diminished greatly the personal meaning she was able to harvest in her journey through life. She believed in and exercised her inner capacity to move beyond the erstwhile story line of the world into which she was born, by re-visioning and re-shaping experienced events into a living story with satisfactory space both for personal meaning-making and for enabling her to live her preferred values. Her candid reflection on events in her life, many of them painful, others full of joy, as well as her insightful evaluations of these stepping stones and her courageous choices for new directions will inspire and motivate many to take a second look at how they, too, can answer for themselves the pivotal questions: Am I satisfied with my life experience? Who do I want to be now? Who do I want to become? How do I reshap
We all have Aha experiences where a great idea or breakthrough suddenly comes to us. What makes a difference is what we do with these Aha experiences. Do you write them down? Do you share them with others? I recommend using them to build “mental models” that will act as building blocks to how you approach similar situations in the future, how you remember them and use them to build a better tomorrow, to open yourself to new possibilities.
Vampires are not just imaginary creatures of fiction or legend—they really exist. They are the people who, having never received love, settle for power instead, and become experts at robbing others of their vital energy. We've all known them. In her fascinating study of this dark psychological archetype, Barbara Hort looks to traditional myths as well as to their modern equivalents in literature, theater, and film, following a blood-soaked trail to such unexpected destinations as The Silence of the Lambs, "Snow White," and the Broadway musical Gypsy. She offers insight into how psychic vampires originate, how we allow ourselves to be caught in their clutches, and how we can protect ourselves from their seductive influence.

Situated along the southern shores of Lake Michigan, between Mount Baldy and the Indiana-Michigan border, is a unique Midwestern landscape. Established at the foot of Hoosier Slide, a natural landmark, Michigan City had attracted a diverse group of pioneers, industrialists, and fun-lovers by the late 1800s. Hoosier Slide is now gone. While the rugged dunes in the east have been replaced by resort communities, the beauty that first captivated settlers is as evident now as it was in the early part of the 20th century.
Griots at War Conflict, Conciliation, and Caste in Mande Barbara G. Hoffman An extraordinary account of conflict and peacemaking among griots. "... a compelling study of how social identities and relationships are constructed and reconstructed through action, specifically through speech.... The book succeeds marvelously in conveying the voice of the people who are, in every sense of the word, its subject." -- Robert Launay In 1985, while she was an apprentice griot or jelimuso, Barbara G. Hoffman saw and recorded a remarkable event in the small town of Kita, Mali. For four days, thousands of griots from all parts of the Mande world gathered to talk, sing, and make music in celebration of the opening of the new Hall of Griots and the installation of the recently named Head Griot. This unprecedented assembly also marked the end of a deadly two-year conflict fought with griot weapons -- words, reputations, and sorcery. Hoffman captures griots making speeches, singing songs of praise, and dancing in honor of their restored unity. Her discerning interpretations of the speeches not only explore the art of griot oratory but show how the use of history, metaphor, religion, proverbs, and praise can mend a community torn apart by war. The speeches, often marked by a keen edge, also reveal what it means to be a griot in a casted society and to demand that other castes recognize and respect this unique identity. The griot's formidable linguistic abilities come to the fore as they negotiate, reestablish, and assert their cultural power. This exceptional book, including generous extracts from the griots' speeches in Mande and in translation, offers surprising and important insights into the multiple meanings of Mande culture, caste, and identity. Barbara G. Hoffman is Assistant Professor of Anthropology at Cleveland State University. She is author of many essays on Mande culture and producer of ethnographic videos on East and West African cultures. She is known to the Mande griot community as Jeli Jeneba Jabate. With deep reading in myth and literature, ones cognition becomes as a rich mother loam wherein spirit can dwell and build that interior castle, from which the indwelling spirit begins to speak through the imagination, the body, and the intellect of the individual. Over time, body, mind, and spirit become one. Then this one can and often does experience the merging within the One. Through the merging of intuition and intellect, we will comprehend the acceleration of consciousness that is overtaking us. Functioning within a state of universal awareness of our oneness will, in the long run, prove to be much easier than defining ourselves into small groupings of discordant persons and nations. The education and evolution of vibrant communities is our beginning task. The creation of a world with a universal consciousness of oneness is our ultimate realization. To act in accord, to make a bridge to new ways of thinking, and in the belief that the reported experiences of individual journeys in our studies, and in our consciousness, can be of great significance nowat this point in time with the world in a general state of confrontation and conflictwe offer this report from our own research and from within this frame of reflection.

Within this fascinating new book, Barbara Morrill analyses the journal writings of Etty Hillesum, a young Jewish woman in the 1940s, as she began analysis with a Jungian oriented practitioner in 1941. While Anne Frank is an inspirational figure, little is known about Etty Hillesum, also from Amsterdam, who kept a diary recounting her life and experiences during early World War II. This book is a compelling example of how we can use Etty Hillesum’s writings in the present to stand firm against the problems we’re currently facing globally. Being a Jungian oriented Integral psychologist and professor, the author examines what Hillesum recorded in her time, as well as employing Etty’s ideas to illuminate the chaos in our time. She explores Hillesum’s own process of individuation and realization, encouraging others to “develop yourselves!” This will be a unique volume of interest to Jungian analysts, analysts in training, as well as readers with an interest in the time period and concern about democracy and “our times.”

Adoptive, foster and stepmothers, like biological mothers, find their lives completely changed by motherhood although they are not always granted the rights and privileges accorded to those who give birth. Barbara Waterman explores the common experiences that are shared by all those who enter the motherhood portal. She highlights the importance of wider family, community and professional support for non-biological parents and primary care-givers of both genders, and their children. A stepmother herself and a practicing psychologist, Waterman's writing is illustrated throughout with vignettes of children and parents from a range of backgrounds. She shows the important ways in which a non-biological attachment is both more similar to and more different from a biological attachment than is currently understood. In doing this, Waterman broadens the notion of the `traditional' family, and offers a positive alternative to the myth of the perfect mother. All kinds of step-, adoptive and foster families and those coming into contact with them will find this thoroughly researched and personal book an indispensable guide.

Waterlogged archaeological sites in Florida contain tools, art objects, dietary items, human skeletal remains, and glimpses of past environments that do not survive the ravages of time at typical terrestrial sites. Unfortunately, archaeological wet sites are invisible since their preservation depends upon their entombment in oxygen-free, organic deposits. As a result, they are often destroyed accidentally during draining, dredging, and development projects. These sites and the objects they contain are an important part of Florida's heritage. They provide an opportunity to learn how the state's earliest residents used available resources to make their lives more comfortable and how they expressed themselves artistically. Without the wood carvings from water-saturated sites, it would be easy to think of early Floridians as culturally impoverished because Florida does not have stone suitable for creating sculptures. This book compiles in one volume detailed accounts of such famous sites as Key Marco, Little Salt Spring, Windover, Ft. Center, and others. The book discusses wet site environments and explains the kinds of physical, chemical, and structural components required to ensure that the proper conditions for site formation are present and prevail through time. The book also talks about how to preserve artifacts that have been entombed in anaerobic deposits and the importance of classes of objects, such as wooden carvings, dietary items, human skeletal remains, to our better understanding of past cultures. Until now this information has been scattered in obscure documents and articles, thus diminishing its importance. Our ancestors may not have been Indians, but they contributed to the state's heritage for more than 10,000 years. Once disturbed by ambitious dredging and draining projects, their story is gone forever; it cannot be transplanted to another location.
Contrary to popular belief, the medieval religious imagination did not restrict itself to masculine images of God but envisaged the divine in multiple forms. In fact, the God of medieval Christendom was the Father of only one Son but many daughters—including Lady Philosophy, Lady Love, Dame Nature, and Eternal Wisdom. God and the Goddesses is a study in medieval imaginative theology, examining the numerous daughters of God who appear in allegorical poems, theological fictions, and the visions of holy women. We have tended to understand these deities as mere personifications and poetic figures, but that, Barbara Newman contends, is a mistake. These goddesses are neither pagan survivals nor versions of the Great Goddess constructed in archetypal psychology, but distinctive creations of the Christian imagination. As emanations of the Divine, mediators between God and the cosmos, embodied universals, and ravishing objects of identification and desire, medieval goddesses transformed and deepened Christendom's concept of God, introducing religious possibilities beyond the ambit of scholastic theology and bringing them to vibrant imaginative life. Building a bridge between secular and religious conceptions of allegorized female power, Newman advances such questions as whether medieval writers believed in their goddesses and, if so, in what manner. She investigates whether the personifications encountered in poetic fictions can be distinguished from those that appear in religious visions and questions how medieval writers reconcile their statements about the multiple daughters of God with orthodox devotion to the Son of God. Furthermore, she examines why forms of feminine God-talk that strike many Christians today as subversive or heretical did not threaten medieval churchmen. Weaving together such disparate texts as the writings of Latin and vernacular poets, medieval schoolmen, liturgists, and male and female mystics and visionaries, God and the Goddesses is a direct challenge to modern theologians to reconsider the role of goddesses in the Christian tradition.
Offers a brief overview of the life and career of professional basketball player LeBron James, discussing his childhood, family, accomplishments, and related topics.
This book is a memorial to C. W. Bynum. He was a passionate lifelong arrowhead hunter and collector. His plan was for himself and Barbara to write the book together during their retirement. This book documents three collections. First, a pictorial display of some of his collection, then a section of poetry mostly by Barbara, and finally a documentation of a collection of old-time herbal remedies. CW was a masonry instructor at Wallace College, and he would ask his students to get remedies from the old folks they knew he loved reading them and wanted them included in the book. So much knowledge about the arrowheads in this book was lost when CW died, but the points remain as a reminder of him to his family. This book was written so that the author and whoever else is interested can remember the feeling of walking in the Alabama fields after a rain with a beloved companion looking for treasure. It was a good journey.
