These are true stories written by the veterans of the Korean Conflict and passed on to me to be included in this book. The book is dedicated to the brave men who fought to preserve our freedoms at a cost that many of us can only imagine.

It was indeed a symposium, a festival of learn ing, science and medicine held in June 1994 in Istanbul, Turkey, in one of the newest and most lavishly fitted modem hotels of the twentieth century, with more extravagant fittings than any sultan at the height of his power was able to command and with a splendidly equipped con ference center as well as a lovely view south-east over the Bosphorous with its busy water traffic. In contrast was the history by which we were surrounded, the early churches of Constantine, the mosques and palaces of the Ottoman sultans, a city embued with an illustrious past and which perhaps was at one time the most famous and the richest in the world. The participants (numbering about 1000), like those early traders of the Golden Hom, united Eastern and Western worlds. They came from the Americas, from the Antipodes, from Asia and, of course, from Europe, bridging the world of science as did the ancient bridges and boats of the Bosphorous in their own time.

The Bible has been written, translated, and interpreted for centuries by men in cultures that were patriarchal. In patriarchy, women are subordinated within the gradations of a hierarchical society. Material on women, therefore has often been misinterpreted or overlooked. In some instances, generic nouns and pronouns in the original languages have been translated into English as masculine words. A careful textual study must be made using all the available tools of biblical scholarship. An accurate understanding of the meaning of words must be sought. Also, readers must try to discern the intentions of the author and try to gain a knowledge of the historical and social background of the biblical material. The demands of God must be distinguished from the demands of a particular culture. The bible as a whole makes it clear that God's people are to bring justice and wholeness to all human beings. the injunctions that degrade women do not provide principles valid for every age of Christianity but instead reflect cultural situations in which men related to women through dominance. The standard for the Christian community today should be the glimmers of female dignity and leadership that shine through the pages of the Bible.

After solving their first case, a kidnapping of some dear friends abducted and taken to Haiti, they have a new office building where they work from. DJ, a biker and a member of a Christian biker's ministry, The Sons Riders, has reported to Andrea and Brian that "Moon," a biker from the notorious gang, The Demons Raiders, is missing. DJ has been witnessing to Moon who has taken DJ into his confidence, sharing things about the Demons actions that could get him killed. We are taken into and given a brief view of the violent lifestyles of evil biker gangs, a life of drugs and murder along with extreme loyalty to one another, a loyalty if violated has severe consequences. Mrs. Derksen does a masterful job of creating characters who we fall in love with and she also builds strong relationships within the characters themselves. The storyline is wonderful, keeping the reader turning pages. She also turns skillful twists that keeps us all guessing to the very end, introducing subplots that link cleverly together with the main plot. The main characters are all born again Jesus followers and Mrs. Derksen tells boldly how relying on Him, through success or failure, always leads to peace. This delightful collection of twelve short stories revolves around the experiences and problems of a bright and charming child of four going on five, who plays the title role in this work of children's fiction. Sally Lewis Eaton has created a true-to-life hero that every child is sure to appreciate and to identify with. Timothy Joe has all the problems typical of a child of his age group: coping with a new neighborhood after the family has moved, and making new friends; learning to care for a first pet (perhaps not so typically, a skunk named Gumdrop); a trip to the dentist, and to the doctor for a DPT shot and, perhaps most important of all, the first day of kindergarten, and getting used to school. The author handles these experiences in a readable, entertaining style geared to the young reader. Each story revolves around a single theme. In "Timothy Joe's Moving Day" we enter the child's mind as he faces the fear and uncertainty of a new place and new people, only to discover that new friends are easily won if you are a cheerful and likeable little boy, and new places can mean an exciting adventure. In "Timothy Joe and Gumdrop" we are introduced to the boy's pet skunk; the story is a valuable lesson in how to care for animals. In "Timothy Joe and the Backside of Things," a trip to the doctor becomes a frightening prospect, but turns out to be much less painful than anticipated. In "Timothy Joe and His New Addition " deals with the uncertainty all children face when they learn they will have to share their parents' love with a new brother or sister. Although these stories are valuable for their instructive qualities, the author's tone never approaches the didactic; her prose is clear and direct, and always entertaining. Children will eagerly learn what the author has to teach. This book is highly recommended for its deft blend of instruction and entertainment, and its polished style.
