In this full biography of Gopal Krishna Gokhale reassesses the Indian political scene during the last decades of the nineteenth century and the first decade of the twentieth. In focusing on the career of the preeminent leader of his time, B. R. Nanda surveys the Indian Nationalist movement during the years 1885-1915 and especially the developments within the Indian National Congress. The author's clear account of Indo-British relations spans the administrations of Lords Curzon, Minto, and Hardinge. Through vignettes of eminent Indian contemporaries, insights into attitudes of officials, and vividly described popular reactions to British policies, he captures the spirit of India's political life at the turn of the century. B. R. Nanda interweaves his discussion of Gokhale's ideas and actions with analysis of major events of the day. He considers the ferment in Maharashtra, the social reform movement, the conflict between Moderates and Extremists in the Indian National Congress, the crisis in the Punjab in 1907, and many other important topics. His book gives rare glimpses of two great friends of India, A. O. Hume and William Wedderburn. Materials from Indian as well as British sources illuminate the pre-Gandhian phase of the conflict between British imperialism and Indian nationalism. Originally published in 1977. Dozakhnama: Conversations in Hell is an extraordinary novel, a biography of Manto and Ghalib and a history of Indian culture rolled into one. Exhumed from dust, Manto’s unpublished novel surfaces in Lucknow. Is it real or is it a fake? In this dastan, Manto and Ghalib converse, entwining their lives in shared dreams. The result is an intellectual journey that takes us into the people and events that shape us as a culture. As one writer describes it, ‘I discovered Rabisankar Bal like a torch in the darkness of the history of this subcontinent. This is the real story of two centuries of our own country.’ Rabisankar Bal’s audacious novel, told by reflections in a mirror and forged in the fires of hell, is both an oral tale and a shield against oblivion. An echo of distant screams. Inscribed by the devil’s quill, Dozakhnama is an outstanding performance of subterranean memory.

1.1 PREFACE : An organization, whether a business or an Industrial enterprise needs money, material, machinery and men for its survival and growth. The success or failure of an organization depends upon the effective combination of these factors. However, the management of ‘men’ means the employees of the organization. Their contribution towards organizational goal is well known to all, since pre-historic time to the most recent time. Whenever we talk about effectiveness and efficiency of an organization, we have to take a serious cognizance of employees as a major determining factor. Organizational effectiveness is critically dependant on how it attracts, recruits motivates and retains its work force. Today’s organizations need to be more flexible so that they are equipped to develop their workforce and enjoy their commitment. If we want an employee’s maximum contribution to work, he/she should be provided such a work environment where he/she will have a strong desire to work. The satisfied, happy and hard working employee is the biggest asset of any organization. The work force of any organization is responsible to a large extent for its productivity and profitability. The work environment has important bearing on the efficiency and satisfaction of the employees. A safe work environment provides the basis for a person to enjoy working. The work should not pose a health hazard for the person. Work performance is constantly affected by physical and psychological conditions of work. It is now increasingly realized that many work behavioural problems associated with performance, moral, absenteeism etc. can be solved with increasing awareness of improving the total work environment.

The problem will examined in this study is the social origin and familiar adjustment of women in modern occupations such as teaching, medical, engineering, legal, administration, journalism and IT profession. The basic assumption is that educational achievement of women and their entrance into modern occupation like Information and Communication Technology is largely a reflection of the socio-economic status of families to which these women belong. Therefore, the present study will attempt to correlate the socio-economic status of the women's family with their educational achievement and with their recruitment in ICT sector.
