This is a biography of Mohammad Ali Jinnah and the story of the creation of Pakistan. At a time of much interest and concern about Pakistan in the international community, this volume provides a historical context which helps in an understanding of the present. It traces the development of the Muslim identity on the Indian subcontinent and follows Jinnah as he rode the wave of Muslim communalism to ultimate success in the demand for the partition of India and the creation of Pakistan at independence from British rule. Jinnah’s successful espousal of the demand for Pakistan was a remarkable feat. In achieving this success, Jinnah traversed a long distance from the beliefs with which he entered public life. He started out a nationalist, as a protégé of senior Congress leaders like Dadabhai Naoroji. However, the introduction of separate electorates for Muslims after the Minto–Morley reforms in 1909 led him to change his position in order to appeal to his changed constituency. Even so, it was not until 1937 that he unabashedly played the religious card. He now began to see the Congress and the Hindus as his adversaries rather than the British. Through these twists and turns of posture, the one constant factor was his underlying ambition to remain in a position of leadership and eminence. This volume traces the zigzag course of Jinnah’s political life and the establishment of Pakistan within the broader framework of the Indian freedom struggle. Indeed the main players in this struggle with three protagonists were the Indian National Congress and the British rulers. This work demonstrates how this bigger struggle opened the door for Muslim separatism led by Jinnah. It was through this opening, aided by British moves to use the Muslim League as a foil to the Congress, that Jinnah very astutely led his party to success in its demand for the creation of Pakistan.

The freedom struggles the world over aiming at liberty from the foreign yoke have been political in nature and the changes in social institutions, if any, were only incidental having not been originally designed or at best post independence script. In sharp contrast stands the 'Non-violent Non-co-operation movement', launched by Mahatma Gandhi for Swaraj built on the foundation of social reforms - HinduMuslim-Unity, removal of untouchability, empowerment of women, Swadeshi and adherence to non-violence as a policy. Phraseology of the 'Nonco-operation movement', in itself gives the philosophy, purpose and content of the movement. However, without a serious study of the movement the vital point missed by the people in understanding the movement is that non-co-operation with the government (British Raj) presupposed co-operation within ourselves - the freedom fighters regardless of religion, caste or creed. This entailed the evolution of the Constructive Programme - the programme of action for strengthening and sustaining the movement. Attempt has been made in the study to understand how Gandhi succeeded in a short period in bringing much needed solidarity for the movement and Swaraj in the Indian society divided by religion and internal caste conflicts in the majority Hindu community. Gandhi era means 1919-1948 because he launched the movement in 1919, which made Mr. Gandhi - Mahatma Gandhi, and 1948, when he fell to an assailant's bullet and was called the Father of the Nation. Way back in 1917 he prophetically said that 'Only if I die for India shall I know that I was fit to live'. Gandhi era means Gandhi and Gandhi alone in this period. A comprehensive study of the entire period was not possible for an old man of 83 years in a short period. Therefore, the period chosen for this study is 1919-1922 which is the most momentous period of the freedom struggle as also the initial period of the movement to ascertain probability of its success. For this purpose, this objective driven book has been divided in two parts. While the second part deals with the movement in chronological order from the data sieved from the Collected Works of Mahatma Gandhi to show that the movement was not only the brainchild of Gandhi but its course and eventual suspension was also decided by him, the second part is more in the nature of analysis for the serious and general readers alike to appreciate objectively the greatness of the leader.

The Brahmins, whose Vedic cult originally involved the sacrifice of cows, adapted Buddhist ahimsa and vegetarianism to stigmatize outcaste Buddhists who were consumers of beef. The outcastes were soon relegated to the lowliest of occupations and prohibited from participation in civic life. To unearth this lost history, Ambedkar undertakes a forensic examination of a wide range of Brahminic literature. SubSaharan Africa is one of the poorest regions of the world. Because most Africans work in agriculture, escaping such dire poverty depends on increased agricultural productivity to raise rural incomes, lower food prices, and stimulate growth in other economic sectors. Per capita agricultural production in subSaharan Africa has fallen, however, for much of the past halfcentury. Successes in African Agriculture investigates how to reverse this decline. Instead of cataloging failures, as many past studies have done, this book identifies episodes of successful agricultural growth in Africa and identifies processes, practices, and policies for accelerated growth in the future. The individual studies follow developments in, among other areas, the farming of maize in East and Southern Africa, cassava across the middle belt of Africa, cotton in West Africa, horticulture in Kenya, and dairying in East Africa. Drawing on these case studies and on consultations with agricultural specialists and politicians from across subSaharan Africa -- undertaken in collaboration with the African Union's New Partnership for Africa's Development -- the contributors identify two key determinants of positive agricultural performance: agricultural research to provide more productive and sustainable technologies to farmers and a policy framework that fosters market incentives for increasing production. The contributors discuss how the public and private sectors can best coordinate the convergence of both factors. Given current concerns about global food security, this book provides timely and important resources to policymakers and development specialists concerned with reversing the negative trends in food insecurity and poverty in Africa.
