“A gentle, knowledgeable guide to a fate we all share” (The Washington Post): the first and only all-encompassing action plan for the end of life. “There is nothing wrong with you for dying,” hospice physician B.J. Miller and journalist and caregiver Shoshana Berger write in A Beginner’s Guide to the End. “Our ultimate purpose here isn’t so much to help you die as it is to free up as much life as possible until you do.” Theirs is a clear-eyed and big-hearted action plan for approaching the end of life, written to help readers feel more in control of an experience that so often seems anything but controllable. Their book offers everything from step-by-step instructions for how to do your paperwork and navigate the healthcare system to answers to questions you might be afraid to ask your doctor, like whether or not sex is still okay when you’re sick. Get advice for how to break the news to your employer, whether to share old secrets with your family, how to face friends who might not be as empathetic as you’d hoped, and how to talk to your children about your will. (Don’t worry: if anyone gets snippy, it’ll likely be their spouses, not them.) There are also lessons for survivors, like how to shut down a loved one’s social media accounts, clean out the house, and write a great eulogy. An honest, surprising, and detail-oriented guide to the most universal of all experiences, A Beginner’s Guide to the End is “a book that every family should have, the equivalent of Dr. Spock but for this other phase of life” (New York Times bestselling author Dr. Abraham Verghese).

In this beautifully illustrated and provocative study, Bridget Elliott and Jo-Ann Wallace reappraise women's literary and artistic contribution to Modernism. Through comparative case studies, including Natalie Barney, Virginia Woolf, Vanessa Bell and Gertrude Stein, the authors examine the ways in which women responded to Modernism and created their artistic identity, and how their work has been positioned in relation to that of men. Bringing together women's studies, visual arts and literature, Women Writers and Artists makes an important contribution to 20th century cultural history. It puts forward a powerful case against the academic division of cultural production into departments of Art History and English Studies, which has served to marginalize the work of female Modernists.
“If one no longer believes in God (as truth),” Wallace Stevens once wrote, “it is not possible merely to disbelieve; it becomes necessary to believe in something else. . . . I say that one's final belief must be in a fiction.” Stevens addressed the concept of a "supreme fiction" throughout much of his career, but many critics feel that his poems never realized that concept beyond a theoretical possibility. B. J. Leggett argues that Stevens did indeed achieve the supreme fiction in his often overlooked late poems. To share in the poet's vision, though, Leggett finds that readers must understand the ingenious intertext that runs through this culminating body of work. After three volumes of difficult and abstract poetry, Stevens in the last five years of his life reverted to a style that is refreshingly personal and accessible. Leggett gives close examination to The Rock, which is the closing section of Stevens's Collected Poems, and to the uncollected poems published as Opus Posthumous, supplying readers with the motifs, conventions, texts, and fictions—or intertext—on which these works' significance depends. He ultimately shows that there is a kind of master narrative in Stevens's late poems, one that is not always explicitly present but that is based on the supreme fiction. It is here that Stevens gives form to his belief. Leggett traces the development of this fiction and demonstrates how knowledge of its presence dramatically changes the reading of key poems. His discussion of Schopenhauer's influence on Stevens, together with rich analyses of major poems, challenges to conventional interpretations, and speculation on the direction Stevens's poetry might have taken had he lived longer, all make for provocative reading. Late Stevens is a book for anyone who thought they knew this poet.

Leggett traces the effect of several important theoretical works on the poetry and prose of Stevens during a period in which he was formulating an aesthetic between 1942 and 1954. The author offers new readings of a number of poems and passages and clarifies certain controversial conceptions developed by Stevens, such as the supreme fiction, the relation of the new poet to tradition, and the psychologies of creativity. Deadly Quiet (A Murder Mystery) By: B. J. Baumgardner About the Author B. J. Baumgardner, born October 28, 1935 in San Jose, IL, was the 10th child in an intellectual and innovative family of 10 children. She felt blessed to have so many loving sisters and brothers. B. J. lived a busy and interesting life. She received both a bachelor’s degree (from ISU in Normal, IL) and a master’s degree (from the U. of Illinois in Champaign-Urbana, IL) in Physical Education. In addition, she earned a certificate from the Famous Writers School. After teaching only two years in Dwight, IL, she decided to join the Navy to expand her knowledge of what life had to offer. And she was successful as evidenced by being assigned to the Pentagon upon graduation from Officer’s Candidate School, which included delivering information regularly to the office of President Eisenhower and then President Kennedy. But B. J. always wanted to be a teacher, so she returned to teaching in Bloomington, IL upon completion of her Navy commitment. She taught a Bloomington High School for 30 years and then retired to her two homes - one in Normal, Illinois and the other in Las Vegas, Nevada where she spent the winter months. Not content with just teaching, B. J. continually needed a challenge. She and two friends, who were sisters, opened a clothing store in downtown Bloomington, IL featuring clothing for large woman called “Classics Unlimited.” Since they purchased a building that included rental units, they purchased additional rental property also. They were so successful with the clothing store that they opened a second one in a mall in Decatur, IL. After ten years, they sold out as other major stores were finally adding clothing for larger women to their inventories. Soon after, they also got out of the rental business. But they had a good run with these two endeavors that were quite successful. If this weren’t enough, B. J. loved music and singing, so she joined Sweet Adelines and performed with them for many years. So what did this woman do upon retiring from teaching? Her friend and traveling companion was still working, so B. J. decided to write murder mystery novels – 2 of them. Fortunately, she had studied for two years at the Famous Writers School for fiction writing in her early years due to her interest in writing. This helped her as she wrote many articles and stories for friends throughout her life. After retirement when she decided to write the murder mysteries, this background with the Famous Writers School proved to be a big advantage to her. In addition to all the above activities, B. J. played a lot of golf, because she loved the challenge of the game. Not surprising, she excelled at the sport. She also traveled continuously throughout the United States most of her life. Although she writes under the name of B. J. Baumgardner, to most of her family and friends, Betty J. Baumgardner, is known as “Nip,” a nickname given to her by her father when she was just a few days old. He introduced her as “a little nip of a thing.” From then on, she was Nip – and still is today.

This study of an extraordinary work of dramatic literature also addresses questions of the nature and dissemination of the scientific revolution. These facets are locked together: although the book does not deny that 'The Tempest' had deep roots in classical literature and elsewhere, it maintains that the play's remarkable dramaturgy and symbolism reflect subtle matters uniquely pertinet to its own fascinating time. A 'Brave New World of Knowledge' uncovers a number of previously little-appreciated connections of 'The Tempest' with specific problems or advances of knowledge, thus showing that the play reflected innovative proto-scientific modes of confronting the physical, biological, and human realms. It also argues that Shakespeare's play mirrored a new tendency to repudiate earlier Renaissance dreams of achieving omniscience and omnipotence. The play reflected a newer hope for knowledge based on speculative boldness linked with close observation, rational and sober precision, and a radical capacity to accept limitation and not-knowing.

Antioxidants are present naturally in virtually all food commodities, providing them with a valuable degree of protection against oxidative attack. When food commodities are subjected to processing, such natural antioxidants are often depleted, whether physically, from the nature of the process itself, or by chemical degradation. In conse quence, processed food products usually keep less well than do the commodities from which they originated. Ideally, food producers would like them to keep better. This objective can often be achieved by blending natural products rich in antioxidants with processed foods, or by using well recognised antioxidants as food additives. In order to understand their action, and hence to apply antioxidants intelligently in food product formulation, some knowledge of the mechanisms by which they function is necessary. This is complex and of antioxidative may rely on one or more of several alternative forms intervention. Accordingly, the various mechanisms that may be relevant are discussed in Chapter 1, in each case including the 'intervention' mechanism. When present in, or added to, foods antioxidants are functional in very small quantities, typically, perhaps, at levels of 0·01 % or less.

Probably the most blighted period in the history of English drama was the time of the Civil Wars, Commonwealth, and Protectorate. With the theaters closed, the country at war, the throne in fatal decline, and the powers of Parliament and Cromwell growing greater, the received wisdom has been that drama in England largely withered and died. Not so, demonstrates Dale Randall in this magisterial study, the first book in nearly sixty years to attempt a comprehensive analysis of mid-seventeenth-century English drama. Throughout the official hiatus in playing, he shows, dramas continued to be composed, translated, transmuted, published, bought, read, and even covertly acted. Furthermore, the tendency of drama to become interestingly topical and political grew more pronounced. In illuminating one of the least understood periods in English literary history, Randall's study not only encompasses a large amount of dramatic and historical material but also takes into account much of the scholarship published in recent decades. Winter Fruit is a major interpretive work in literary and social history.

I was not entirely alone in this, as in asking me to produce such a book the commissioning Editor, Mr George Olley of Elsevier Ap plied Science Publishers, had pictured a text of perhaps 300 pages, but on seeing my list of chapter titles realized that we were talking about a - chapter, two-volume work. We eventually decided to go ahead with it, and the result was more successful than either of us had dared to hope could be It was therefore with rather mixed emotions that I contemplated the case. a second edition at the suggestion of Blackie Press, who had taken over the title from Elsevier. On the one hand, I was naturally flattered that the book was considered important enough to justify a second edition. On the other hand, I was very well aware that the task would be even greater this time.
Fledgling advice columnist, Loraine Scotsman, is shocked when she starts receiving threatening letters. Every advice columnist receives their share of hate mail, but these letters leave her scared for her safety and that of her young son. She reaches out to her cousin’s neighbor, Maggie Banks, wife of the famous lieutenant Theodore Banks, for help. Who could be behind these threats? Could it be her ex-husband or his family, or could it be a disgruntled reader? Before long, it becomes obvious that someone is targeting her, literally.
The editors and the publisher are pleased to present another volume in this series of monographs. The topic of teeth was last reviewed within the framework of this Handbook more than fifty years ago, in 1936, by Josef Lehner and HanDs Plenk of Vienna, who wrote a comprehensive treatise on the subject in volume V 3. / The introduction of new methods (e.g., transmission and scan ning electron microscopy, histochemistry, radioautography, element analysis) and progress in dental research have made an update necessary. In present times, characterized by scientific specialization and very rapid progress, it is virtually impossible to find a single individual prepared to review a field of research as large as that of teeth. Consequently. several authors were asked to contribute to the present volume. Originally. the intention was to cover the field in one volume. When it became clear that the material had become too extensive for a single volume, and when some authors were forced by external factors to withdraw from the project, it was decided to publish two volumes. In 1986, the volume Periodontium, written by Hubert E. Schroeder of Zurich. appeared in this series (volume VIS, 418 pages).
Organophosphorus Chemistry provides a comprehensive annual review of the literature. Coverage includes phosphines and their chalcogenides, phosphonium salts, low coordination number phosphorus compounds, penta- and hexa-coordinated compounds, tervalent phosphorus acids, nucleotides and nucleic acids, ylides and related compounds, and phosphazenes. The series will be of value to research workers in universities, government and industrial research organisations, whose work involves the use of organophosphorus compounds. It provides a concise but comprehensive survey of a vast field of study with a wide variety of applications, enabling the reader to rapidly keep abreast of the latest developments in their specialist areas. Specialist Periodical Reports provide systematic and detailed review coverage of progress in the major areas of chemical research. Written by experts in their specialist fields the series creates a unique service for the active research chemist, supplying regular critical in-depth accounts of progress in particular areas of chemistry. For over 80 years the Royal Society of Chemistry and its predecessor, the Chemical Society, have been publishing reports charting developments in chemistry, which originally took the form of Annual Reports. However, by 1967 the whole spectrum of chemistry could no longer be contained within one volume and the series Specialist Periodical Reports was born. The Annual Reports themselves still existed but were divided into two, and subsequently three, volumes covering Inorganic, Organic and Physical Chemistry. For more general coverage of the highlights in chemistry they remain a 'must'. Since that time the SPR series has altered according to the fluctuating degree of activity in various fields of chemistry. Some titles have remained unchanged, while others have altered their emphasis along with their titles; some have been combined under a new name whereas others have had to be discontinued. The current list of Specialist Periodical Reports can be seen on the inside flap of this volume.
Eliza Davies is plagued by a horrible suspicion that Joey Kinkaide is being abused in her home. She has no proof; nevertheless Eliza is compelled to help the young girl. Confronted with the now exposed truth of her own childhood experiences, Eliza must decide if she can ever forgive those who abused her. Struggling to cope with new and devastating revelations, Eliza’s world spins out of control and for the first time in her life, she begins to lose hope. However, though her own life is tilted and uncertain, she cannot give up on Joey. She must find a way to help the young girl, for in some way it seems that in rescuing Joey, she may be able to save herself. Through her own personal struggle and the one she carries on for Joey, she discovers that no matter how dark the circumstance, there is hope in forgiveness, and redemption for the innocent.

The Chemistry of Organolithium Compounds is a comprehensive review of the status of organolithium compound chemistry. This book is composed of four parts and nineteen chapters that particularly describe the reactions involving these compounds The first part highlights the constitution of organolithium compounds, specifically in the absence and presence of electron donors, as well as the configurational stability of these compounds. The second part deals with their preparation from organic halides and lithium metal involving metallation and metal-halogen exchange, while the third part focuses on their organic synthesis. The fourth part considers the synthesis of organometallic compound derivatives from main group and transition metals. This book will prove useful to organic chemists and organic chemistry researchers.
