The climate of the Earth has undergone many changes and for those times when geologic data are widespread and abundant the Mesozoic appears to have been one of the warmest intervals. This was a time during which the single continent Pangea disintegrated into continental units similar to those of today, a time when there were no significant polar ice caps and sea level was generally much higher than at the present time, and a time when dinosaurs apparently dominated terrestrial faunas and the flowering plants evolved. Understanding this alien world, ancestral to ours, is intrinsically interesting, intellectually challenging, and offers opportunities for more effective targeting of sites where commercially important geological resources may be found. It also provides critical insights into the operation of coupled Earth systems (biospheric, atmospheric, hydrospheric and geospheric) under extreme 'greenhouse' conditions, and therefore may have relevance to possible future global change. Our intention in organizing this Discussion Meeting was to bring together those who gather and interpret geologic data with those who model global climates from first principles. The community of workers who study the Quaternary have made significant advances by integrating and comparing palaeodata and climate model experiments. Although we have focused not on the Quaternary 'icehouse' but on the Mesozoic 'hothouse' climate we are well aware that approaches used in the study of the Quaternary may have relevance to earlier times.

For a wide array of problems requiring surgical intervention, this volume examines the anatomy, preoperative evaluation, surgical strategy, details of tech nique, postoperative management, and anticipated results. The manage ment of operative complications and injuries to bowel, urinary system, and pelvic vessels is discussed. This volume is divided into three sections: ambulatory, vaginal, and abdominal surgery. The ambulatory section will be particularly useful to the family physician. The abdominal section explains complication man agement for the gynecologist whose surgical background may not include gastrointestinal or urinary tract surgery.. The section on ovarian surgery contains additional data for the general surgeon who may encounter unexpected ovarian lesions. Although the book should be most useful to gynecologic residents-in-training and practicing gynecologists, it will also be of use to general surgeons who perform gynecologic operations and to all physicians who perform ambulatory gynecologic procedures. The operative techniques depicted are currently used procedures based on the newer concepts of wound healing and suturing, utilizing mod ern surgical instrumentation. When several techniques are available, the author's personal preference is described. This book, which was produced by the project manager system, rep resents the efforts of 21 persons in three cities. Christine G. Williamson managed the project with drive, understanding, and skill. The Lactic Acid Bacteria is planned as a series in a number of volumes, and the interest shown in it appears to justify a cautious optimism that a series comprising at least five volumes will appear in the fullness of time. This being so, I feel that it is desirable to introduce the series by providing a little of the history of the events which culminated in the decision to produce such a series. I also wish to indicate the boundaries of the group 'The Lactic Acid Bacteria' as I have defined them for the present purposes, and to outline my hopes for future topics in the series. Historical background lowe my interest in the lactic acid bacteria (LAB) to the late Dr Cyril Rainbow, who introduced me to their fascinating world when he offered me a place with him to work for a PhD on the carbohydrate metabolism of some lactic rods isolated from English beer breweries by himself and others, notably Dr Dora Kulka. He was particularly interested in their preference for maltose over glucose as a source of carbohydrate for growth, expressed in most cases as a more rapid growth on the disaccharide; but one isolate would grow only on maltose. Eventually we showed that maltose was being utilised by 'direct fermentation' as the older texts called it, specifically by the phosphorolysis which had first been demonstrated for maltose by Doudoroff and his associates in their work on maltose metabolism by a strain of Neisseria meningitidis.

The editors and the publisher are pleased to present another volume in this series of monographs. The topic of teeth was last reviewed within the framework of this Handbook more than fifty years ago, in 1936, by Josef Lehner and HanDs Plenk of Vienna, who wrote a comprehensive treatise on the subject in volume V 3. / The introduction of new methods (e.g., transmission and scan ning electron microscopy, histochemistry, radioautography, element analysis) and progress in dental research have made an update necessary. In present times, characterized by scientific specialization and very rapid progress, it is virtually impossible to find a single individual prepared to review a field of research as large as that of teeth. Consequently. several authors were asked to contribute to the present volume. Originally. the intention was to cover the field in one volume. When it became clear that the material had become too extensive for a single volume, and when some authors were forced by external factors to withdraw from the project, it was decided to publish two volumes. In 1986, the volume Periodontium, written by Hubert E. Schroeder of Zurich. appeared in this series (volume VIS, 418 pages).
