In the First Anglo-Afghan War of 1839 to 1842, considered the most infamous of all colonial wars, only Dr. Brydon survived out of a 13,000 to 20,000 Kabul army of the British Raj. William Dalrymple, a contemporary English historian writing in his 2013 book Return of a King, points out a number of parallel facts about that war and the present situation in which NATO and American forces are engaged. The British "Army of Sind" replaced King Dost with Shah Shuja, who lived in exile in India for twenty years under British protection. The regime change by the British was successful with the two Afghan kings interchanging residences. Dalrymple states, "Shah Shuja and President Karzai share the same tribal heritage; the Shah's principal opponents were the Ghilzai tribes, who today make up the bulk of the Taliban foot soldiers; the same cities garrisoned by British troops are today garrisoned by foreign troops, attacked from the same rings of hills and high passes from which the British faced attacks." After two years as renegades, Prince Dost's twenty-three-year-old son Prince Akbar along his comrade Fitzgerald from Pennsylvania, who was the first American in that land, return to fight the British Army of occupation. The Irish-American Fitzgerald mournfully relates the inhumane events of that war and his own adventures in becoming an Afghan prince.

My goal in writing this book is not to try to instruct you or to indoctrinate you. It's rather to present you with a menu of theories, reflections and certain facts concerning civilization and its difficulties in advancing to the next level. That next level, for me, would be to take heed of and to put into practice the 2600 year old Golden rule: "Do unto others as you would have them do unto you". It's a rule that everybody understands, but somehow, we have not yet succeeded to apply it at all levels of the world's societies. Family is the institution where we apply it the most; although more in some than in others. The school is an institution where the golden rule is sacrificed in great part due to its coercive approach and its lame pedagogy. The government is the institution where it's the least applied, due to corruption and abuse of power, and the omnipresent coercion towards other countries and towards its own citizen. Is it to say that we're doomed and that there's nothing to be done? I tried ...and hope I succeeded in answering that question in this book.

Like merchant ships flying flags of convenience to navigate foreign waters, traders in the northern borderlands of the early American republic exploited loopholes in the Jay Treaty that allowed them to avoid border regulations by constantly shifting between British and American nationality. In Citizens of Convenience, Lawrence Hatter shows how this practice undermined the United States’ claim to nationhood and threatened the transcontinental imperial aspirations of U.S. policymakers. The U.S.-Canadian border was a critical site of United States nation- and empire-building during the first forty years of the republic.
