What did the "Negro problem," as it was called at the turn of the twentieth century, look like? Autumn Womack's study examines efforts to visualize Black social life through new technologies and disciplines-from photography and film to statistics-in the decades between 1880 and 1930. Womack describes nothing less than a "racial data revolution," one in which social scientists, reformers, and theorists rendered Black life an inanimate object of inquiry. At the very same time, Black cultural producers staged their own kind of revolution, undisciplining racial data in ways that challenged normative visual regimes and capturing the dynamism of Black social life. Womack focuses on figures like W.E.B DuBois, Kelly Miller, Sutton Griggs, and Zora Neale Hurston, as well as lesser-known editors, social reformers, and performers. She shows how they harnessed media as diverse as the social survey, the novel, the stage, and early motion pictures to reform visual practices and recalibrate the relationship between data and black life"--
A delightful collection of 150 profiles of women who refused to confine themselves to the nineteenth-century Victorian model for proper womanhood. During the Victorian era, a woman’s pedestal was her prison . . . “Women should not be expected to write, or fight, or build, or compose scores. She does all by inspiring man to do all.” —Ralph Waldo Emerson “There is nothing more dangerous for a young woman than to rely chiefly upon her intellectual powers, her wit, her imagination, her fancy.” —Godey’s Lady’s Book magazine But, scores of nineteenth-century American women chose to live life on their terms. In this book you will meet women who refused to remain on a Victorian pedestal. In San Francisco, a courtesan appeared as a plaintiff in court, suing her clients for fraud. In Montana, a laundress in her seventies decked a gentleman who refused to pay his bill. A forty-three-year-old schoolteacher plunged down Niagara Falls in a wooden barrel. A frail lighthouse keeper pulled twenty-two sinking sailors out of the ocean off Rhode Island. A pair of Colorado madams fought a public pistol duel over their mutual beau. Two lady lovebirds were legally wed in Michigan. An ad hoc abolitionist spirited away scores of slaves on the Underground Railroad. A Secessionist spy swallowed a secret message as she was arrested, claiming that no one could capture her soul. Featuring fifty black-and-white photos from the era. Perfect for fans of Women Who Run with the Wolves or Badass Affirmations. Praise for Wild Women “A fantastic read with unforgettable woman from across the world. I love this groundbreaking and fascinating book of wonderful women!” —Becca Anderson, author of The Book of Awesome Women
A Guide to Therapeutic Child Care provides an easy to read explanation of the secrets that lie behind good quality therapeutic child care. It describes relevant theories, the 'invisible' psychological challenges that children will often struggle with and how to develop a nurturing relationship and build trust. Combining advice with practical strategies, the book also provides specific guidance on how to create safe spaces (both physical and relational) and how to aid the development of key social or emotional skills for children which may be lacking as a result of early trauma. Written with input from foster carers, the book is an ideal guide for residential child care workers, foster carers, kinship carers, social workers and new adoptive parents.

This book is a helpful primer for faculty looking to build a career and those interested in understanding how professors are tasked in their profession. Endorsements: "I can think of no question more commonly asked among academics, new and veteran alike, than what it means to flourish in this profession, particularly for those who speak against the grain. In this important new book, Autumn Cyprès draws on the voices of established scholars in order to bring clarity and insight to the competing implicit and explicit rules and contested political and cultural terrains that we all must navigate. Readers will find helpful advice not merely to succeed in this profession, but to change the profession itself." - Kevin Kumashiro, University of San Francisco “Professor Cyprès’ book is a wake up call to the professoriate to rescue our profession from the clutches of those wanting to make scholars obedient servants of power. Her analysis and prescriptions provide guidelines and hope for revitalizing and energizing this once honored profession.” - From the foreword by Joel Spring, Queens College and Graduate Center, City University of New York In this important new book, Autumn Tooms Cyprès provides her readers with a critical examination of the people who teach and produce research and scholarship in our institutions of higher education. The insights she reveals through her probing interviews with individual professors who have made careers in the halls of academia help us to understand the politics, power struggles and perils, both large and small, which shape the modern university. Given the important role these institutions play in our society, such an examination is not only helpful, but essential. - Pedro A. Noguera, New York University

Create campuses inclusive and supportive of disabled students, staff, and faculty Disability in Higher Education: A Social Justice Approach examines how disability is conceptualized in higher education and ways in which students, faculty, and staff with disabilities are viewed and served on college campuses. Drawing on multiple theoretical frameworks, research, and experience creating inclusive campuses, this text offers a new framework for understanding disability using a social justice lens. Many institutions focus solely on legal access and accommodation, enabling a system of exclusion and oppression. However, using principles of universal design, social justice, and other inclusive practices, campus environments can be transformed into more inclusive and equitable settings for all constituents. The authors consider the experiences of students, faculty, and staff with disabilities and offer strategies for addressing ableism within a variety of settings, including classrooms, residence halls, admissions and orientation, student organizations, career development, and counseling. They also expand traditional student affairs understandings of disability issues by including chapters on technology, law, theory, and disability services. Using social justice principles, the discussion spans the entire college experience of individuals with disabilities, and avoids any single-issue focus such as physical accessibility or classroom accommodations. The book will help readers: Consider issues in addition to access and accommodation Use principles of universal design to benefit students and employees in academic, cocurricular, and employment settings Understand how disability interacts with multiple aspects of identity and experience. Despite their best intentions, college personnel frequently approach disability from the singular perspective of access to the exclusion of other important issues. This book provides strategies for addressing ableism in the assumptions, policies and practices, organizational structures, attitudes, and physical structures of higher education.

Most of the lumber camps that harvested 8.5 million acres of West Virginias virgin forest had faded into history when John Raine built Rainelle in the Meadow River basin in 1909. By recruiting workers of high morale and character, many of them highly skilled, Rainelle became noted as the best hardwood sawmill town in the country and a town built to carry on. Through vintage photographs, Rainelle shares stories of the four generations who built and operated a prosperous Meadow River Lumber Company for 60 years, using the entire tree from bark to birds nest, and their descendants who continue building the town decades after the mills closing. Rainelle captures founders and lumber workers, preachers and physicians, war heroes and athletes, businesses and churches, schools and recreation, as well as that spice of West Virginia life, politics and government.
“A fascinating look” (The Boston Globe) at how we think and talk about beauty in the twenty-first century—and the unexpected and often positive way that beauty shapes our lives. For decades, we’ve thought of beauty as a negative influence in our lives. We feel insecure in the face of retouched, impossibly-perfect images. We worry primping and preening are a distraction and a trap. But in Face Value, journalist Autumn Whitefield-Modrano dispels this one-sided beauty myth and examines the relationship between appearance and science, social media, sex, friendship, language, and advertising to show how beauty actually affects us day to day. Through meticulous research and interviews with dozens of women across all walks of life, she reveals surprising findings, like wearing makeup can actually relax you, you can convince people you’re better looking just by tweaking your personality, and the ways beauty can be a powerful tool of connection among women. Provocative and empowering, it celebrates a relaxed brand of feminism, one in which it’s equally okay to feel fierce in your fake eyelashes and confident when going makeup-free. Face Value is “an immensely valuable work, one that seamlessly—and impressively—combines the tropes of the academic lit review and the memoir and the work of cultural criticism into an engaging, and timely, follow-up to The Beauty Myth” (The Atlantic).
Powerful, thought-provoking, and heartfelt, this debut YA novel by author Autumn Allen is a gripping look at what it takes (and takes and takes) for two Black students to succeed in prestigious academic institutions in America. In ALL YOU HAVE TO DO, two Black young men attend prestigious schools nearly thirty years apart, and yet both navigate similar forms of insidious racism. In April 1968, in the wake of Martin Luther King, Jr.'s assassination, Kevin joins a protest that shuts down his Ivy League campus... In September 1995, amidst controversy over the Million Man March, Gibran challenges the “See No Color” hypocrisy of his prestigious New England prep school... As the two students, whose lives overlap in powerful ways, risk losing the opportunities their parents worked hard to provide, they move closer to discovering who they want to be instead of accepting as fact who society and family tell them they are.

Janet's brain felt foggy and numb. She imagined herself kneeling on a great frozen lake, and she pressed her face against the ice, trying to see through the cloudy surface to the open water below. In fact, she didn't feel any physical sensation at all, just an internal panic. Janet didn't understand these feelings. She just knew that in her frightening daydreams, she was lost above the ice and the knowledge that could save her was trapped in the dark water below. Soon, Janet was forgetting things, missing school, and losing sleep. She'd find notes that she'd written to herself but couldn't remember writing. They said things like, "Janet! Help me!" and "Who are you?" Scariest of all, she began hearing voices in her head that did not sound like her own. When she imagined herself looking down through the barren ice, she thought she saw a little girl looking back at her. Janet was sure the little girl's name was Sara... Have you ever daydreamed, "lost track of time" when you were having fun, or "tuned out" when your parents were scolding you? If so, you were experiencing dissociation. Janet's dissociation, however, is much more severe. She is suffering from dissociative identity disorder. Different parts of her personality have become so separate that they are beginning to seem like different people. A dissociative disorder like Janet's requires medical intervention. Janet's story, and stories like hers, can teach us a lot about how our minds work and how they can be treated. Read Dissociative Disorders and learn more about these psychiatric disorders and the help available for people like Janet.

With an emphasis on work-life balance, author Autumn Smith offers insights and reflections that pertain to time management, business etiquette, and conflict resolution, all presented with a hint of humor and a lot of grace. In Still Prospering, her narratives demonstrate how her faith continues to be her anchor as she fulfills professional obligations, juggles family responsibilities, and explores new areas of passion such as understanding mental health and ministry. Smith speaks and writes candidly with a message of hope and grace, as she herself admits to struggling with everything from a potty mouth to an unmanageable caffeine addiction. A thoughtful combination of seriousness and silliness, Still Prospering offers an encouraging follow up to her first book, Reflections by Autumn Smith: Prospering.
This book provides unique material that goes far beyond a description of bone and joint disorders alone. Each chapter provides information on the history, pathogenesis, diagnosis (physical and radiographic), therapy and prognosis of a particular canine skeletal disease as well as how the disease will affect the dog's life. The text covers all clinically relevant physical regions in the dog, eg, shoulder, elbow, hip, stifle and tarsus, and presents a group of actual, clinical osteochondrosis cases involving different anatomical locations. The authors address the importance of selection of dogs for breeding, including changes in breed appearance and disease propensity and the effect of high-energy diets in fast-growing animals. Discussion includes the impact of a lifetime of pain for the affected dog and the treatment expense for clients, yet provides steps that help the owner curb the progressive aspects of bone or joint diseases and manage the animal's discomfort. In daily practice client questions about skeletal disorders are routine. This remarkable, instructional text will provide answers, incidence figures, advice about surgery and timing, and honest analyses of treatment failures and successes. Here is a fresh look at OCD, dysplasias and other bone diseases, with realistic assessments and positive directives for pet care and client support. Published by Schluetersche, Germany and distributed by Manson Publishing .
The African Americans of Sewickley Valley have a history as rich and deep-rooted as the valley itself. Originally pioneered by Quakers and abolitionists sentimental to the cause of enslaved men, Sewickley is noted for containing routes and safe houses for those on the Underground Railroad. Known as an affluent bedroom community, Sewickley is considered the wealthiest municipality along the entire 98-mile stretch of the Ohio River. Early residents brought black servants with them to serve as domestics. As construction increased, many African Americans migrated primarily from Virginia and Kentucky to work in the area as builders. The organization of Sewickley's first African American mission marked the start of a strong and lively course for the African American community. Beginning with Jim Robinson in 1823 through the culmination of today's Come on Home annual reunion, African Americans in Sewickley Valley documents the life and ambition of the African Americans who grew as a vital part of Sewickley's community today.
