The theme of the conference, ASME XI, 'New Sounds for a New Century,' has stimulated the academic and musical minds of a broad cross-section of music educators both within Australia and internationally. The papers show that we can be proud of the way music educators in Australia are meeting the challenges of music education as we move towards the next century.
This volume of the ASME XIII Conference Proceedings provides a picture of the 'meeting together' of music educators from all over Australia, and indeed, from many parts of the world. The Conference provides a rare opportunity for music educators from far and wide to engage in professional development which will facilitate the development of new avenues for growth and encouragement for the future.
The theme for the ASME 2007 Fortieth Anniversary Conference is 'Celebrating Musical Communities'. This theme reflects the interdependency of music, music education and the broader community. It recognizes the richness of musical life in modern society and allows us to bridge traditional gaps. A major Forum will look at the recently completed National Review into School Music and throw light on the current state of our profession and its possible directions.
