These proceedings represent the papers presented at the XXIIIrd annual conference of the Australian Association for Research in Music Education, held in Newcastle from 21- 24 September 2001. Papers cover all aspects of music education including: teacher attitudes, parents as facilitators in music practice, music education for boys, community-based integrated music programs, and the teaching of intonation.

Mindful of humanity's position at the threshold of a new millennium, the conference focussed on a range of issues relevant to research and development in music education in this context. The keynote speaker, Professor David Aspin, illuminated the gathering with an outstanding delivery on the mission of arts education and lifelong learning. His impressive second keynote address centred on a response to David Elliott's praxial philosophy and matters related to formulating a philosophy of music education. Research papers ranged from trends in Australian music education research and assessment of student outcomes to special education, voice science and music technology. The relevance of aesthetic music education, implications of inclusivity and funding for the arts were discussed at three issues forums. Round table session explored topics such as corporate sponsorship, specialist pre-tertiary education and brass pedagogy.
Papers at this conference cover innovation and tradition in music education. Topics include aural traditions, research methodology, information technology in music education, classroom music, instrumental music teaching and music education in a digital world.
In selecting 'Honing the Craft' for our theme the aim was: to emphasise the skills required by music educators; to promote collaboration towards the highest musical goals; to stimulate critical reflection of current teaching practices; to encourage sharing of practical ideas; to demonstrate examples of exemplary practice; and to support the implementation of the National Profiles.
