Drastic changes in lay religiosity during the High Middle Ages spurred anxiety about women forsaking their secular roles as wives and mothers for religious ones as nuns and beguines. This anxiety and the subsequent need to model an ideal of feminine behavior for the laity is particularly expressed in the German versions of Latin and French narratives. Using thirteenth-century penitentials, monastic exempla, and sermons, Karina Marie Ash clarifies how secular wifehood was recast as a quasi-religious role and, in German epics and romances from the late twelfth and early thirteenth centuries, how female characters are adapted to promote the salvific nature of worldly love in ways that echo the pastoral reevaluation of women at that time. Then she argues that mid and late thirteenth-century German literature not only reflects this impulse to idealize women's roles in lay society but also to promote an alternative model of femininity that deploys ways of privileging secular roles for women over religious ones. These continuously evolving readaptations of female protagonists across cultures and across centuries reflect fictive solutions for real historical concerns about women that not only complement contemporary pastoral and legal reforms but are also unique to medieval German literature.

This book develops a theory of enriched meanings for natural language interpretation that uses the concept of monads and related ideas from category theory, a branch of mathematics that has been influential in theoretical computer science and elsewhere. Certain expressions that exhibit complex effects at the semantics/pragmatics boundary live in an enriched meaning space, while others live in a more basic meaning space. These basic meanings are mapped to enriched meanings only when required compositionally, which avoids generalizing meanings to the worst case. Ash Asudeh and Gianluca Giorgolo show that the monadic theory of enriched meanings offers a formally and computationally well-defined way to tackle important challenges at the semantics/pragmatics boundary. In particular, they develop innovative monadic analyses of three phenomena - conventional implicature, substitution puzzles, and conjunction fallacies - and demonstrate that the compositional properties of monads model linguistic intuitions about these cases particularly well. The analyses are accompanied by exercises to aid understanding, and the computational tools used are available on the book's companion website. The book also contains background chapters on enriched meanings and category theory. The volume is interdisciplinary in nature, with insights from semantics, pragmatics, philosophy of language, psychology, and computer science, and will appeal to graduate students and researchers from a wide range of disciplines with an interest in natural language understanding and representation.

XVI Psychologists have, however, shown that what we are primarily aware of is not a succession of sense-data but figures-ground phenomena: Wittgenstein's ambiguous duck-rabbit is merely one such example. They have also drawn our attention to the existence of tertiary qualities in perception, such as 'symmetry' and 'elegance' which are just as directly given as are the perceived colours red, green or yellow. It is interesting to note that Merleau-Ponty has made considerable use of Gestalt ideas in his Phenomenology of Perception. One of the commonest reasons given by linguistic philosophers for not making direct use of the results of psychological research (although philosophers are usually willing to accept the first-hand results of physical science) is that philosophical accounts of perception and thinking are concerned with analysing the language in which these reports are made; that is to say, they are second-order enquiries. Often this approach is still more restricted and ordinary linguistic usage is taken as the yardstick against which questions relating to thought and perception are to be measured. The task of the philosopher is then con fined to the analysis of ordinary language. If he is more adventurous, as some writers on philosophical psychology are, he might go on to show how far the language used by psychological researchers falls short of the paradigms of common sense.

[Illustrated with over two hundred and sixty maps, photos and portraits, of the battles, individuals and places involved in the Crimean War] Lieut.-General Sir Charles Ash Windham had served his country in the Grenadier Guards for some 23 years before retiring on half pay in 1849. The outbreak of the Crimean War led him back to active duty, being appointed assistant quartermaster-general of the 4th division; he arrived in the Peninsula with his division on the 14th September 1854. Just six days later he and his men were on the field at the Battle of Alma, although only slightly engaged, and he was also present at the battle of Balaclava. He was greatly distinguished at the battle of Inkerman, and owing to the death or disablement of superiors, was in charge of the whole of the 4th division for a time. He devoted every moment of the winter of 1854 to the care of his staving, ragged men who were suffering from the dearth of supplies during the terrible privations on the Russian steppe. Windham became a national hero for his actions in leading the gallant, but abortive, assault on the feared “Redan” fortification at Sebastopol on the 8th September 1855. Promoted immediately for his distinguished conduct to Major-General, he ended the war as the chief of staff of the army under Sir William Codrington. He served prominently during the Indian Mutiny, and despite a fierce resistance to overwhelming numbers of rebels at Cawnpore he was driven back through the town. He was unfairly castigated by the press and never received a further active command; the erroneous blackening of his name is laid to rest by the correspondence which was printed in this volume for the first time, in short he was hiding the errors of a subordinate.

About the Book Success is Just Running Out of Mistakes is about a life-long quest to improve the therapy of kidney failure, especially with hemodialysis technology. Dr. Ash began to write this because of a lack of progress in dialysis therapy. He is tired of physicians and politicians saying that there is a "lack of innovation" among nephrologists. The problem isn't lack of innovation, but rather a failure to commercialize radically better new technology. In some ways the book is also a collection of 12 case studies of new technology and ideas and how a small technology-driven firm can succeed or fail in efforts to bring their new product to become a widespread market success. There are few textbooks that describe not only successes of R&D companies in bringing products to the market but also failures. What is surprising about the failures described in this book is that they occurred at many different steps of bringing a new product to market.. The answer to a physician who says "I have a new idea and think it could help medical therapy. What should I do next?" is very long and complicated. The one trait Success is Just Running Out of Mistakes really demonstrates is the importance of persistence. Not just in any one project, but in a career trying to make just one small part of medical therapy better for patients with kidney failure. Too many young physicians don't realize the tough road ahead to make medical therapy better and quit after the failure of their first good idea. As Winston Churchill said, "Success is not final, failure is not fatal: it is the courage to continue that counts." About the Author Stephen R. Ash, MD, FACP, recently retired from clinical practice as a Nephrologist at Indiana University Health Arnett in Lafayette, Indiana. He is CEO of HemoCleanseTechnologies, Chairman of the Board of AshAccess Technology, and co-founder of a number of spin-off biotechnology firms. He has a long history of research and product development in the field of sorbents, resulting in devices for treatment of kidney failure (AllientTM by Renal Solutions) and for liver failure (Liver DialysisTM by HemoTherapies). He was instrumental in development of an orally ingested sorbent for potassium (now marketed by AstraZeneca as Lokelma®). Dr. Ash has also invented a number of new catheters for dialysis access, including the Ash Split Cath®, CentrosFLO® and AdvantageTM PD Catheter. Dr. Ash is a co-founder and Past President of the American Society for Diagnostic and Interventional Nephrology (ASDIN). He is Past President of ASAIO and until recently served as Secretary-Treasurer of IFAO. He is recipient of the Lifetime Achievement Award from ASDIN, the Celebration of Life Honor by NKF of Indiana, and the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Annual Dialysis Conference. Dr. Ash also has a dedicated and loving family, including his wife Marianne, and daughters, Emily and Sarah. Marianne and Dr. Ash are long term members of Trinity United Methodist Church in Lafayette, Indiana.
