Jack Cordell Sr. was released from prison after serving seven years of his ten year sentence for manslaughter of Brian Douglas. His wife Miriam Cordell was waiting for him at home and welcomed him home with open arms, but Jack was not receptive to her as she expected him to be. She knew something was wrong and tried to find out why her husband was rejecting her and behaving erratically. Miriam enlisted their sons Jack Jr, Al, and Trace to see if their father would open up to them, but with no avail. Jack Sr. turned over the running of his business to his two older sons, Jack Jr. and Al. Trace had made a career in the military. Jack was content to stay at home doting on his grandchildren. Over the next few years, Jack became increasingly ill. Miriam suspected that he had caught some kind of disease while he was in prison. Countless doctors’ visits and tests did not reveal what was making Jack sick. His health was deteriorating rapidly and he finally confessed to his doctor that he had received test drugs while in prison in exchange for a reduced sentence. Miriam accepted her husbands’ illness. After his death, her eldest grandson, Jackie was doing bombing missions over North Vietnam. His jet fighter was shot down over one of his bombing missions. Trace using his military contacts in Vietnam and found him and brought his nephew home safe and sound. After the death of Miriam, Jack Sr’s attorney presented a hand written letter to Jack’s son’s regarding all that had transpired after the death of Brian Douglas.

Since the Global Financial Crisis, the structure of financial markets has undergone a dramatic shift. Modern markets have been “zombified” by a combination of Central Bank policy, disintermediation of commercial banks through regulation, and the growth of passive products such as ETFs. Increasingly, risk builds up beneath the surface, through a combination of excessive leverage and crowded exposure to specific asset classes and strategies. In many cases, historical volatility understates prospective risk. This book provides a practical and wide ranging framework for dealing with the credit, positioning and liquidity risk that investors face in the modern age. The authors introduce concrete techniques for adjusting traditional risk measures such as volatility during this era of unprecedented balance sheet expansion. When certain agents in the financial network behave differently or in larger scale than they have in the past, traditional portfolio theory breaks down. It can no longer account for toxic feedback effects within the network. Our feedback-based risk adjustments allow investors to size their positions sensibly in dangerous set ups, where volatility is not providing an accurate barometer of true risk. The authors have drawn from the fields of statistical physics and game theory to simplify and quantify the impact of very large agents on the distribution of forward returns, and to offer techniques for dealing with situations where markets are structurally risky yet realized volatility is low. The concepts discussed here should be of practical interest to portfolio managers, asset allocators, and risk professionals, as well as of academic interest to scholars and theorists.

Miriam picked up a hitchhiker starting the chain of events that would affect the lives of the Cordell family for the next thirty decades; of world wars, espionage, child ignored by a father, bribery, sibling rivalry, a mother’s mistrust and secrets kept and murder. Even when the Cordell sons grew into men, Jack continued his animosity toward the younger son Trace, while twins Jack Jr., and Al were doted by their father. Miriam knew of her husband’s treatment of their youngest son was because of that night she was attacked. Jack Jr. and Al had blond hair and blue eyes like their father while Trace had dark brown hair and brown eyes like his mother. It just added into Jack Sr.’s belief that Trace was not his son. Miriam would bide her time for the right time and place to make Jack believe differently. It took a murder for the truth of Trace’ conception to finally come out but many years later. After the murder of Miriam’s antagonist, Jack pleaded guilty to manslaughter thus protecting his family from the truth of the true murderer. Once out of prison, Jack kept his secret from Miriam and his sons. The whole sorted story would come out in a letter penned by Jack to his sons after he and Miriam had passed away. At the end, the Cordell sons vowed to help those who suffered in the hands of unscrupulous people, no matter what for love of family.
