India has a rich tradition of learning and education from the time immemorial. These were handed over generation to generation either through oral or written media. The basic characteristics of Ancient or Hindu civilization is that it has been moulded and shaped the course of its history more by religious than by political or economic influences. The Early Educational System in India was based on the conception of Brahmacharya, which laid greater emphasis on carya than mere learning. The system was established on the tie of constant association between the teacher and the taught. The Sanskrit word for pupil was antevasin, while acarya stood for the preceptor. A student was known by the word Brahmachari. The religious student belonging to the caste of Brahmana, Kshatriya or Vaisya was known by the term Varni. As a pupil, he was known as Chatra because his duty was always to be at his teacher's service and to protect him from any harm just like an umbrella. The antevasin was to lead the life of a regular Brahmacharin in the house of his teacher. Special hostels for female students had also come into existence known as Chatrisala i.e., Lady's Hostel.
Drawing on the history of the philanthropy of India's economic elites, Arun Kumar discusses how their ideas and understanding of development have shifted and changed over time. Contrary to development studies' characterization of elites as anti-development or captors of scarce resources, Kumar shows how elites longed for development for others. Development provided the moral justification, in their calculations, for protecting their commercial interests as they navigated the turbulent Indian twentieth century.

On 1 July 2017, Goods and Services Tax (GST) became a reality. Some of the claims made by the government were that GST would bring about ease of doing business; increase tax collection; lower inflation; increase GDP growth by 1-2 per cent; and check the black economy. More than a year later, we have more questions than answers. Why did the economy slow down? Is the government likely to collect more taxes? Why have prices continued to rise? Why has Malaysia withdrawn GST? Turns out that problems with GST are both transitional and structural. To correct for these there have been a few hundred notifications and orders from the government which have added to the confusion. On 8 November 2016, the prime minister announced the immediate cancellation of all Rs 500 and Rs 1000 denomination notes, wiping out 86 per cent of the currency in circulation. India's well-functioning economy went into a tailspin. This move, it was claimed, was made to wipe out corruption, deter the generation of black money, weed out fake Indian currency notes and curb terrorism. Overnight, people in India realized that the cash in their pockets had no value. A window of fifty days was granted to 1.3 billion people to convert their old notes into new ones. Businesses, especially in the unorganized sectors, came to a grinding halt. Patients in hospitals faced huge problems, farmers had difficulty buying inputs, weddings were scaled down, and fishermen watched their catch rot. Many lost their jobs and could not support their families. A year later, the RBI announced that 99 per cent of the old currency notes had been deposited with it. India continues to grapple with the effects of this move. The black economy has not been dented; counterfeiting and terrorism continue; the credibility of the RBI, banks and currency is damaged; the accountability of the Parliament and the prime minister has been eroded; and the social divide has widened. There have been many arguments and counter-arguments from both sides, but they have missed the complete picture.
