This book constitutes the thoroughly refereed joint post-proceedings of the 10th Conference of the Spanish Association for Artificial Intelligence, CAEPIA 2003, and the 5th Conference on Technology Transfer, TTIA 2003, held in San Sebastián, Spain, in November 2003. The 66 revised full papers presented together with one invited paper were carefully selected during two rounds of reviewing and improvement from an initial total of 214 submissions. The papers span the entire spectrum of artificial intelligence and advanced applications in various fields.

STAIRS 2006 is the third European Starting AI Researcher Symposium, an international meeting aimed at AI researchers, from all countries, at the beginning of their career: PhD students or people holding a PhD for less than one year. The topics of the papers included range from traditional AI areas to AI applications, such as Agents, Automated Reasoning, Belief Revision, Case-based Reasoning, Constraints, Data Mining & Information Extraction, Genetic Algorithms, Human Computer Interaction, Interactive Sensory Systems (Speech, Multi-Model Processing), Knowledge Representation, Logic Programming, Machine Learning, Natural Language Processing, Neural Networks, Nonmonotonic Reasoning, Planning & Scheduling, Reasoning about Action and Change, Robotics, Search, Semantic Web, Spatial & Temporal Reasoning and Uncertainty.

This book constitutes the thoroughly referred post-proceedings of the 11th Conference of the Spanish Association for Artificial Intelligence, CAEPIA 2005, held in Santiago de Compostela, Spain in November 2005. The 48 revised full papers presented together with an invited paper were carefully selected during two rounds of reviewing and improvement from an initial total of 147 submissions. The papers span the entire spectrum of artificial intelligence from foundational and theoretical issues to advanced applications in various fields.

The focus of this report is on artificial intelligence (AI) and human-computer interface (HCI) technology. Observations, conclusions, and recommendations regarding AI and HCI are presented in terms of six grand challenge areas which serve to identify key scientific and engineering issues and opportunities. Chapter 1 presents the panel's definitions of these and related terms. Chapter 2 presents the panel's general observations and recommendations regarding AI and HCI. Finally, Chapter 3 discusses computer science, AI, and HCI in terms of the six selected "grand challenge" areas and three time horizons, that is, short term (within the next 2 years), midterm (2 to 6 years), and long term (more than 6 years from now) and presents additional recommendations in these areas.

The annual AAAI National Conference provides a forum for information exchange and interaction among researchers from all disciplines of AI. Contributions include theoretical, experimental and empirical results. Topics cover principles of cognition, perception and action; the design, application and evaluation of AI algorithms and systems; architectures and frameworks for classses of AI systems; and analyses of tasks and domains in which intelligent systems perform. The Innovative Applications Conference highlights successful application of AI technology and explores issues, methods and lessons learned in the development and deployment of AI applications.
