Arthur W. Hoffmann looks back at a life well lived in this autobiography that celebrates his family, values, and engineering success. His parents, George and Amanda Theresa Hoffmann, were German immigrants who came to America seeking freedom, opportunity, and employment in the years following World War I. Desperate for work, they settled in Detroit, where the automobile industry offered some hope of successful employment. He recalls that those growing up in cities and neighborhoods in the 1940s had an ingrained value system and appreciation of the enormous progress that had occurred in a short timeframe. Those qualities helped the country reach new heights after the end of World War II. Hoffman got his big break in October 1955, when he was selected by General Motors Ternstedt Division to join its drafting school. After passing a test, he was hired, and after automobile safety became a national concern with the publication of Ralph Naders book, Unsafe at Any Speed, he become a leading automotive safety engineer and designerand eventually an expert witness/consultant. But he also had to face numerous personal challenges, including his time in the army, multiple divorces, and being separated from his infant son from his first marriagea son he would not reconnect with until decades later.

Jobs An American Solution is a specific jobs creation idea that would be initiated by businesses and individual entrepreneurs and based on an apprenticeship approach. It is a self-help program that is intended to expedite the creation of good-paying skilled and professional jobs. It is not a government regulated apprenticeship similar to those that are common in European or Asian countries. This Apprentice 101 program is a voluntary, unstructured jobs initiative by private individuals, small or large businesses, trade organizations, unions, municipalities, etc. The basic motivation for a business or entrepreneur is a generous tax credit for every apprentice candidate they hire, sponsor and train. This is not a government hand-out but an investment in America and its citizens that promises to be extraordinary. Researchers at Columbia University and the City University of New York, found that for each unemployed youth someone between the ages of 16 and 24 who is in neither work or school costs taxpayers nearly $ 14,000 dollars per year in direct costs for things like medical bills and government aid, while ultimately creating a social burden of more than $37,000 dollars annually (when accounting for the costs of crime and lost tax revenue). Jobs are the life blood of our economy. They create wealth in exchange for services rendered that increase and improve our way of life. Current unemployment and under-employment is especially high. The many jobless people in America are losing hope of an economic recovery. Our politicians, Republicans and Democrats, respond with contrasting solutions that focus only on taxes and spending. Our large cities and communities are especially in need of real good-jobs if we are to succeed in fighting poverty. We need to encourage our more fortunate citizens to provide job opportunities for the less-fortunate.

Precious Cargo is a term safety advocates use to describe helpless children who are at risk when riding in automobiles. These fragile passengers are dependent upon parents and caregivers to protect them and ensure their wellbeing. Motor vehicle crashes claim thousands of child fatalities and debilitating injuries every year. Unrestrained children are at the greatest risk of death and serious injury. Use of Child Restraint Systems is essential to protect your loved ones. The author reviews the historical basis of child car seats and the evolution of child safety restraints to date. Child restraint systems have a proven record of saving the lives of numerous children, and reducing serious injury of thousands of others. However, it has been a rocky road. Current child seats are effective when used correctly but misuse; confusion, and product recalls have tainted the industry. Progress toward advancing child safety has stalled; with little progress over the past 40 years. Obsolete and ineffective testing methodology needs to be corrected to advance the state-of-art. The Car companies are not involved in child restraint design, crash testing or vehicle installation problems. The National Highway Traffic safety Administration (NHTSA) oversight has been negligent and ineffective in advancing child safety technology. Cooperation between car companies, child seat manufacturers, NHTSA, and concerned safety advocates as the way-forward to advancing child safety is presented.

Automotive rear impacts are the most common type of car accident, with 2.5 million occuring each year. Most often, the vehicle property damage is minor with no occupant injury. However, more serious rear-end collisions can result in life-changing events. There are two major injury types caused by rear impact accidents. Whiplash (non-lethal injury) and Seat-Collapse (potential serious or lethal injury). Driver and front passenger seats all too often fail, with the seatback collapsing, ejecting the occupants rearward into the rear seat area with serious consequences. Seat design strength requiements are covered by FMVSS 207 Seat Systems Standard. The auto companies rely on this standard to test their seatsdard. The FMVSS 207 standard for seatback strength is flawed auto compaies use this requirement to allow the seatback to deform during a serious rear-impact, to achive enery-management. The controversy over seatback strength, Rigid verus Yielding, continues today. An occupied front seat that collapses during a rear-impact can entrap rear seat occupants, especially children that are required to sit in the rear row seats. Safety advocates and researchers report that for the period 1990 to 2014 nearly 900 children seated behind a front-seated occupant or in a center rear seat died in rear impacts of 1990 and later model-year cars. Law suites are prevalent and multi-million dollar penalties or settlements resulted and litigation continue today. Rear-end crashes also involve vehicle occupants in other automotive design hazards. Use of Child Restraints (CRS) is essentaial.
