His parents, George and Amanda Theresa Hoffmann, were German immigrants who came to America seeking freedom, opportunity, and employment in the years following World War I. Desperate for work, they settled in Detroit, where the automobile industry offered some hope of successful employment. He recalls that those growing up in cities and neighborhoods in the 1940s had an ingrained value system and appreciation of the enormous progress that had occurred in a short timeframe. Those qualities helped the country reach new heights after the end of World War II. Hoffman got his big break in October 1955, when he was selected by General Motors Ternstedt Division to join its drafting school. After passing a test, he was hired, and after automobile safety became a national concern with the publication of Ralph Naders book, Unsafe at Any Speed, he become a leading automotive safety engineer and designerand eventually an expert witness/consultant. But he also had to face numerous personal challenges, including his time in the army, multiple divorces, and being separated from his infant son from his first marriagea son he would not reconnect with until decades later.

It is a self-help program that is intended to expedite the creation of good-paying skilled and professional jobs. It is not a government regulated apprenticeship similar to those that are common in European or Asian countries. This Apprentice 101 program is a voluntary, unstructured jobs initiative by private individuals, small or large businesses, trade organizations, unions, municipalities, etc. The basic motivation for a business or entrepreneur is a generous tax credit for every apprentice candidate they hire, sponsor and train. This is not a government hand-out but an investment in America and its citizens that promises to be extraordinary. Researchers at Columbia University and the City University of New York, found that for each unemployed youth someone between the ages of 16 and 24 who is in neither work or school costs taxpayers nearly $ 14,000 dollars per year in direct costs for things like medical bills and government aid, while ultimately creating a social burden of more than $37,000 dollars annually (when accounting for the costs of crime and lost tax revenue). Jobs are the life blood of our economy. They create wealth in exchange for services rendered that increase and improve our way of life. Current unemployment and under-employment is especially high. Automotive rear impacts are the most common type of car accident, with 2.5 million occuring each year. Most often, the vehicle property damage is minor with no occupant injury. However, more serious rear-end collisions can result in life-changing events. There are two major injury types caused by rear impact accidents. Whiplash (non-lethal injury) and Seat-Collapse (potential serious or lethal injury). Driver and front passenger seats all too often fail, with the seatback collapsing, ejecting the occupants rearward into the rear seat area with serious consequences. Safety advocates and researchers report that for the period 1990 to 2014 nearly 900 children seated behind a front-seated occupant or in a center rear seat died in rear impacts of 1990 and later model-year cars. Law suites are prevalent and multi-million dollar penalties or settlements resulted and litigation continue today. Rear-end crashes also involve vehicle occupants in other automotive design hazards.
