Sir William S. Gilbert (1836-1911) and Sir Arthur Seymour Sullivan (1842-1900) collaborated on a series of popular operettas, many of which are still performed today.
The Victorian theatrical partnership of the librettist W. S. Gilbert and composer Arthur Sullivan produced fourteen comic operas that would exact a major influence on the history of theatre. Such popular classics as ‘H.M.S. Pinafore’, ‘The Pirates of Penzance’ and ‘The Mikado’ conjured fanciful "topsy-turvy" worlds, where absurd premises are taken to a logical conclusion. Notable for their humour and pathos, these celebrated operas enjoyed an enduring international success and are still performed frequently throughout the English-speaking world. For the first time in digital publishing, this comprehensive eBook presents Gilbert’s complete extant works, with numerous illustrations, rare texts, informative introductions and the usual Delphi bonus material. Published in 1992. This is a revised, enlarged edition of a book which on its original appearance in 1984 was hailed as a landmark in the study of Victorian musical life. It presents the figure of Sir Arthur Sullivan (1842-1990) not only as the celebrated co-creator of light operas with W.S Gilbert, but as a composer of all kinds of music from symphony and concerto to ballads such as ‘The Lost Chord’ and hymns such as ‘Onward, Christian Soldiers’. A prominent public life, with a knighthood in 1883, is contrasted with an unconventional private life involving a liaison of almost thirty years with an American living in London, Mary Frances Ronalds. The author’s access to Sullivan’s diary held by Yale University and to letters and other documents at the Pierpont Morgan library in New York gives this book both a unique authority and a deep human understanding. A new chapter updates research to the 150th anniversary of the composer’s birth, 1992, and incorporates music examples.

The nineteenth-century English slide trumpet was the last trumpet with the traditional sound of the old classic trumpet. The instrument was essentially a natural trumpet to which had been added a movable slide with a return mechanism. It was England's standard orchestral trumpet, despite the dominance of natural and, ultimately, valved instruments elsewhere, and it remained in use by leading English players until the last years of the century. The slide trumpet's dominating role in nineteenth-century English orchestral playing has been well documented, but until now, the use of the instrument in solo and ensemble music has been given only superficial consideration. Art Brownlow's study is a new and thorough assessment of the slide trumpet. It is the first comprehensive examination of the orchestral, ensemble and solo literature written for this instrument. Other topics include the precursors of the nineteenth-century instrument, its initial development and subsequent modifications, its technique, and the slide trumpet's slow decline. Appendices include checklists of English trumpeters and slide trumpetmakers.
The four classic novels of Sherlock Holmes, heavily illustrated and annotated with extensive scholarly commentary, in an attractive and elegant slipcase. The publication of Leslie S. Klinger's brilliant new annotations of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's four classic Holmes novels in 2005 created a Holmes sensation. Klinger reassembles Doyle's four seminal novels in their original order, with over 1,000 notes, 350 illustrations and period photographs, and tantalizing new Sherlockian theories. Inside, readers will find: A Study in Scarlet (1887)—a tale of murder and revenge that tells of Holmes and Dr. Watson's first meeting; The Sign of Four (1889)—a chilling tale of lost treasure...and of how Watson met his wife; The Hound of the Baskervilles (1901)—hailed as the greatest mystery novel of all time; and The Valley of Fear (1914)—a fresh murder scene that leads Holmes to solve a long-forgotten mystery. Whether as a stand-alone volume or as a companion to the short stories, this classic work illuminates the timeless genius of Conan Doyle for an entirely new generation.

Written by the developers of the popular Problem-Solving Approach (PST), this evidence-based manual reflects important advances in neuroscience that underscore the important role of emotion as a crucial aspect of behavioral health treatment. This updated treatment model, Emotion-Centered Problem-Solving Therapy (EC-PST) moves emotion to a critical position that is integrated throughout its therapeutic strategies. This is a significant shift in interventions that had previously focused on cognitive approaches. Comprehensive and detailed, this manual provides specific treatment guidelines based on a “stepped-care” model of PST through four major toolkits, clinical examples, and case studies for the application of EC-PST. It describes approaches that can be used for a wide variety of populations (including such targeted groups as U.S. Veterans and active military personnel), settings, and client issues. It addresses such new implementation systems as telehealth, and community collaborative care models. In addition, the authors provide empirically-based evidence of the treatment’s efficacy underlying positive functioning factors such as hope, well-being, enhanced leadership, and more. The print version of the book includes free, searchable, digital access to the entire contents. Therapy client workbook available as an added resource with book purchase. Key Features: Provides evidence-based update of popular treatment modality Authored by the co-developers of PST and EC-PST Includes clinical examples, treatment aids, and case studies for treatment with a variety of populations Offers new treatment guidelines for suicide risk reduction, enhancing positive functioning, and fostering resilience among U.S. veterans and active military personnel Adopted by the VA and DOD Also available for purchase, Emotion-Centered Problem-Solving Therapy Client Workbook
