A NATO Advanced Study Institute (ASI) on High-Brightness Accelerators was held at the Atholl Palace Hotel, Pitlochry, Perthshire, Scotland, from July 13 through July 25, 1986. This publication is the Proceedings of the Institute. This ASI emphasized the basic physics and engineering of the rela tively new and fast-emerging field of high-brightness particle accelera tors. These machines are high- to very-high-current (amperes to hundreds of kiloamperes), modest-voltage (megavolt to tens of megavolts) devices, and as such are opposed to those historically used for high-energy physics studies (i.e., gigavolt and higher energies and rather low currents). The primary focus of the Institute was on the physics of the accelerator and the beam, including the dynamics, equilibria, and insta bilities of high-current beams near the space-charge limit; accelerator engineering techniques; and the applications of high-brightness beams in areas such as free-electron lasers, synchrotron-radiation sources, food processing, and heavy- and light-ion fusion. The Institute concentrated on bringing together several diverse but related communities which, we hope, benefited from this opportunity to interact: the North American activity in machine technology, engineer ing, and diagnostics with the strong European theoretical community; the basic beam physicists with the engineering technologists.

This bibliography is the first of a series of studies about higher education in Canada sponsored by the committee on the History of Higher Education in Canada established by the National Conference of Canadian Universities. Among its nearly 4,000 entries are included the books, pamphlets, theses, dissertations, and articles in journals and magazines which supply the context and commentary on the history of Canadian higher education. Part I of the Bibliography provides the context; our universities do not exist in a vacuum—they are part of the economic, political, religious and social life of the community. Part I, therefore, includes a section on Canadian Culture, listing histories of Canada and its provinces, of its religious and social institutions, of its art, its economy, racial groups, relations with other countries. In order to study higher education in relation to other levels of education, another section lists works concerned with educational developments and problems at all levels. Part II lists the works bearing directly on higher education in Canada, and includes sections on History and Organization, Curriculum and Teaching, The Professor, The Student. Entries are arranged in chronological order in all sections in order to present the progressive development of each topic, and a full Index enables easy reference by author. No distinction has been drawn between English- and French-language publications: Chemistry and Chimie are one subject. The relative proportion of English and French entries in a section is often significant as indicating differences in the frequency and importance of particular fields of study in our colleges.
Jensen is a controversial figure, largely for his conclusions based on his and other research regarding the causes of race based differences in intelligence and in this book he develops more fully the argument he formulated in his controversial Harvard Education Review article ‘How Much Can We Boost IQ and Scholastic Achievement?’. In a wide-ranging survey of the evidence he argues that measured IQ reveals a strong hereditary component and he argues that the system of education which assumes an almost wholly environmentalist view of the causes of group differences capitalizes on a relatively narrow category of human abilities. Textbooks have been standard schoolroom fixtures for as long as most living citizens of this country can remember. Many turn-of-the-century students were introduced to reading through the moralistic McGuffey Readers and struggled through the rather drab and colorless pages of volumes on history, geography and civics. In contrast, today's textbooks contain not only narrative content accompanied by colorful photographs and graphics, but also section and chapter exercises that are extended through the use of worksheets and other materials. Moreover, the textbook and its related student materials are packaged together with teacher's editions and tests in grade-level sets that amount to content area programs rather than mere texts.
From the Preface, by Arthur Kleinman: Patients and Healers in the Context of Culture presents a theoretical framework for studying the relationship between medicine, psychiatry, and culture. That framework is principally illustrated by materials gathered in field research in Taiwan and, to a lesser extent, from materials gathered in similar research in Boston. The reader will find this book contains a dialectical tension between two reciprocally related orientations: it is both a cross-cultural (largely anthropological) perspective on the essential components of clinical care and a clinical perspective on anthropological studies of medicine and psychiatry. That dialectic is embodied in my own academic training and professional life, so that this book is a personal statement. I am a psychiatrist trained in anthropology. I have worked in library, field, and clinic on problems concerning medicine and psychiatry in Chinese culture. I teach cross-cultural psychiatry and medical anthropology, but I also practice and teach consultation psychiatry and take a clinical approach to my major cross-cultural teaching and research involvements. The theoretical framework elaborated in this book has been applied to all of those areas; in turn, they are used to illustrate the theory. Both the theory and its application embody the same dialectic. The purpose of this book is to advance both poles of that dialectic: to demonstrate the critical role of social science (especially anthropology and cross-cultural studies) in clinical medicine and psychiatry and to encourage study of clinical problems by anthropologists and other investigators involved in cross-cultural research. This book is based on the papers presented at the conference on "Mecha nisms of DNA Damage and Repair: Implications for Carcinogenesis and Risk Assessment," held at the National Bureau of Standards on June 2-7, 1985, This volume deals with mechanisms of DNA damage and repair at the molecular level; consequences of unrepaired or misrepaired damage, with major emphasis on carcinogenesis; drugs which bind selectively to altered and potentially damaging DNA sequences; and potential utilization of DNA damage as an endpoint for assessing risks of UV light, ionizing radiations, chemicals, drugs, and hazardous agents in foods. Because the induction of mutations by radiation and genotoxic chemicals has been observed to follow one-hit kinetics in some instances, it is generally assumed that any level of exposure to a DNA-damaging agent may increase the risk of genetic disease or cancer in an exposed population. At the same time, however, there is evidence that although the DNA of living cells is continually damaged by natural background radiation, free radicals, and other naturally occurring processes, most of the damage is normally repaired.
