It's the Jobs and Debt Stupid provides a plan (the "Flowplan") designed to quickly turn around America's failing economy, where President Obama, the Democrat-GOP congress, and the GOP presidential wannabes have failed to do so since the "Great Recession" began. The Flowplan offers specific details on how to slash, eliminate, and/or privatize 143 wasteful federal-giveaway programs to provide an annual saving of $5.88 trillion (yearly, not over a decade) that can be applied to the creation of 25 million new jobs at a $36,000 yearly salary and to pay off the national debt in four years or less by paying down the debt at a rate of $4 trillion per year. All of this is accomplished without touching Medicare or Social Security at the present time, and without additional taxation as proposed by the current administration. The creation of 25 million new jobs can be repeated annually, in whole or in part, as long as necessary to reverse America's debilitating unemployment problem. This book also describes a detailed approach to dumping the do-nothing, congress for a "Direct Democracy," in which the American people vote on a yearly basis to solve the most critical problems confronting the nation. No more bribing lobbyists, PACs, or time-wasting quibbling, because the people will vote on these issues every November of every year.

The Greek word "gnosis," defined as direct spiritual knowledge or insight, has its origins in historical offshoots of Christianity in late antiquity. Gnosis and Gnosticism have become leitmotifs in popular culture, in films such as The Matrix and Dark City, as well as in anime and other popular art forms. In American Gnosis, Arthur Versluis explores the fascinating connection between the Gnostic tradition and contemporary American spirituality, politics, and popular media. Versluis surveys themes of Gnosticism and gnosis in American culture, both within the United States and in global contexts. Versluis shows that gnosis is key to understanding a wide spectrum of global syncretic religious and intellectual movements-some sensational, even wild, but all fascinating. American gnosis, he argues, is a defining feature of hybrid new religious forms in the twenty-first century. Versluis provides case studies of major contemporary figures and texts that are emblematic of neo-gnosticism, offering a comprehensive framework of gnosis and an understanding of gnostic trends in modernity. When some of the richest men in America, including John Jacob Astor, realized in the 1890s that the New York Central, Lehigh Valley, Erie, and Delaware, Lackawanna & Western Railroads passed through a one-mile corridor, they began planning a community. In 1892, the renowned firm of Olmsted, Olmsted & Eliot designed a residential development surrounding manufacturing facilities. In 1894, it was incorporated as the village of Depew. The first tenant, the New York Central Locomotive Works, attracted a number of railroad-related industries, and Depew continued to grow until advances in technology and the Depression caused the New York Central to withdraw in 1931. Gradually, others such as Magnus Metal, National Battery, and Symington-Gould were phased out. Depew would never become a vast industrial complex as first planned, but today, the village is a mixture of residential and commercial development.

Refugee policy has failed frequently over the past decade, resulting in instability, terrible hardships and loss of life. This book is the first effort to review systematically the recent past and re-design policy to give fresh answers to old problems. Specific recommendations are made to re-conceive refugee policy to be more proactive and comprehensive as well as to re-organize how policy is formulated within and among governments. Refugee policy has not kept pace with new realities in international and humanitarian affairs. Recent policy failures have resulted in instability, terrible hardships, and massive loss of life. This book systematically analyzes refugee policy responses over the past decade, and calls for specific reforms to make policy more proactive and comprehensive. Refugee policy must be more than the administration of misery. Responses should be calculated to help prevent or mitigate future humanitarian catastrophes. More international cooperation is needed in advance of crises. Humanitarian structures within governments, notably the United States, as well as the wide variety of international institutions involved in humanitarian action must be re-oriented to cope with new challenges.

On 3 February 1941, the First Maryland Infantry Regiment, Maryland Army National Guard, was inducted into federal service as the 115th Infantry Regiment and sent to join the 29th Infantry Division. They arrived in England on 11 October 1942, and then were attached to the 1st Infantry Division in preparation for the D-Day invasion. They moved with the 1st Infantry Division from 2 June 1944, and remained with 1st Infantry Division until 7 June 1944, when they returned to the 29th Infantry Division for further operations. Their participation in the Normandy Campaign continued until it was over on 24 July 1944. They immediately moved into the Northern France Campaign on 25 July 1944, which continued until it was over on 14 September 1944. During this period the 115th Infantry Regiment was engaged in one of the war's forgotten chapters, "The Battle of Brest". The Battle for Brest was one of the fiercest battles fought during Operation Cobra, the Allied breakout of Normandy which began on 27 July 1944, during the Battle of Normandy during World War II. The 115th Infantry then started participation in the Rhineland Campaign on 15 September 1944, whereupon the 115th Infantry crossed from France to Belgium and the Netherlands both on 27 September 1944, and entered Germany on 30 September 1944.
