The question of the a priori—can an adequate epistemology be developed without appeal to a non-empirical source of justification?—is a core issue running throughout the history of philosophy, and recent decades have seen some provocative and potentially epochal work on the issue. Arthur Sullivan provides a clear-headed evaluation of the upshot of these developments. He argues that the notion of the constitutive a priori provides the best means, all things considered, of accommodating these recent developments into a coherent, compelling view. The constitutive a priori is most commonly known as a position within the philosophy of science, holding that one of Kant’s signature moves provides the means to incorporate unforeseen drastic shocks into existing theory. This book shows that this notion of the constitutive a priori provides not merely a satisfactory epistemological framework, but, further, a compelling way to accommodate and integrate some of the most significant lessons learned in twentieth century philosophy. In this respect the standard histories and industrial studies tend to stimulate curiosity rather than satisfy it. When was a union founded? When did it merge or dissolve itself, or simply disappear? What records survive and where can further details of its history be found? These are the kinds of question the Directory sets out to answer. While motor neuropathies and neuronopathies and mixed sensory-motor neuropathies have been met with adequate interest by clinical and basic researchers and physicians, pure sensory neuropathies and neuro nopathies have received comparably less attention, despite of the consider able morbidity they may cause in the individual patient. This prompted us to organize an International Symposium on Sensory Neuropathies which was held in Vienna, September 22-24,1990, as satellite to the International Neuromuscular Congress held one week earlier in Munich, Germany. We were fortunate to have a faculty of experienced authorities in the field as participants. This volume is the proceedings of the symposium. Due to factors which were beyond our control, publication of this volume was significantly delayed. Despite the enormous progress of biomedicine in recent years, most prominently in molecular biology, we feel that the contributions of this volume still represent a valuable reference for clinical, physiological, biochemical and pathomorphological studies on the sensory nervous system for which similarly comprehensive data are difficult to locate.
