This book discusses the proper use of legal language in business communication. While communicating, a business leader has to bear in mind the relevant legal framework, and be sure to never violate it. However, legal language in itself can be so complex and difficult that it is often unclear as to what meaning can be ascribed to different words and phrases used in a particular context. Also, while it’s easy to say that there are certain limits to the law, those limits are not readily visible to the uninitiated; occasionally, even experts flounder. Exploring precisely these topics, the book will be of interest to students of business, law, and business communication; managers; lawyers; researchers; practitioners; and general readers alike.
Bhumihars are a prominent ‘Ayachak’ brahmin community of East India. Ayachak brahmins gave up priestly duties and took up agriculture for subsistence and bore arms to protect the motherland. Ayachaks have coexisted alongside the traditional priestly Yachak class, within the Brahminical fold across India since time immemorial. Bhumihar brahmin community, though small, has a rich history of both valour and scholarship. Even as the Greeks, led by Alexander the Great, were ravaging the north-western flanks of India, a Chanakya was plotting a quiet pushback. When the successors of King Ashoka, smitten by the non-violent ways of Buddhism, were dilly dallying against the imminent threat of a Greek resurgence, a Pushyamitra Shunga rose to shake the warriors out of their stupor of non-violence and pushed back the Greeks beyond the borders of Bharat forever. When forced to use a rifle cartridge laden with beef starch, against their Hindu beliefs, a Mangal Pandey became the first one to rise in protest and soon a nation followed. The indomitable spirit of the community has inspired and dazzled with their scholarship as well. Ramdhari Singh Dinkar’s pen, drenched in the patriotic fervour of ‘Veer Rasa’, inspired many mutinies against the British. From the venerable Shri Babu, the first chief minister of Bihar in independent India, to Raj Narain, the giant killer who defeated Indira Gandhi, the community has shone in the field of politics and leadership. The community has not shied away from raising its voice against injustice and led reform movements like abolition of Zamindari and the temple entry movement. They may have lost their traditional tools of subsistence, but they still carry the twin endowments of bravery and intellect in their genes. Bhumihar ‘Ayachak’ brahmins are truly the brahmins who refused to beg.

‘A great man in Indian politics’ —Dr Ram Manohar Lohia on Dr Ambedkar Dr Ambedkar’s role in the cause of social emancipation has been researched and written about extensively. His part in the drafting of the Indian Constitution between 1946 and 1950 has also received considerable attention. In The Foresighted Ambedkar, Anurag Bhaskar argues that India’s Constitution was drafted not just between 1946 and 1950 but over the course of four decades. Dr Ambedkar was the only person to have been involved at all the stages related to the drafting of the Indian constitutional document since 1919. These stages bear the imprint of his contribution and role. This book seeks to focus on Dr Ambedkar’s influence on the Indian constitutional discourse from 1919, when he entered public life, until the actual writing of the Constitution and even beyond. Covering the different constitutional moments as and when they happened, it highlights Dr Ambedkar’s role in those moments. A seminal work of intellectual and constitutional history, this volume demonstrates why Dr Ambedkar is rightly called the ‘Father of the Indian Constitution’.
Mark Twain observed, “I'm in favour of progress; it's change I don't like.” Coal dominates Indian energy because it’s available domestically and cheap (especially without a carbon tax). If the global focus is on the energy transition, how does India ensure a just transition? Managing winners and losers will be the single largest challenge for India’s energy policy. Coal is entrenched in a complex ecosystem. In some states, it’s amongst the largest contributors to state budgets. The Indian Railways, India’s largest civilian employer, is afloat because it overcharges coal to offset under-recovery from passengers. Coal India Limited, the public sector miner that produces 85% of domestic coal, is the world’s largest coal miner. But despite enormous reserves, India imports about a quarter of consumption. On the flip side, coal faces inevitable pressure from renewable energy, which is the cheapest option for new builds. However, there is significant coal-based power capacity already in place, some of which is underutilized, or even stranded. Low per-capita energy consumption means India must still grow its energy supply. Before India can phase out coal, it must first achieve a plateau of coal. How this happens cost-effectively and with least resistance isn’t just a technical or economic question, it depends on the political economy of coal and its alternatives. Some stakeholders want to kill coal. A wiser option may be to first clean it up, instead of wishing it away. Across 18 chapters, drawing from leading experts in the field, we examine all aspects of coal’s future in India. We find no easy answers, but attempt to combine the big picture with details, bringing them together to offer a range of policy options.
About the Book A BOOK ON THE STATE OF EDUCATION IN INDIA BEYOND THE MAIN CITIES AND AN ODE TO EDUCATORS WHO ARE SHAPING THE FUTURE OF OUR COUNTRY. Education is the possibility of building something better—a better future, a better community, a better society, a better world. But what really is education? What does it mean to build a better future? And how does one build this future—beyond the metropolitan cities and the schools for the elite? In this collection of essays, Anurag Behar takes us to schools in remote villages of India. He gives us insight into where our nation stands on education and, through that lens, into the nation itself. He shows us an India that is waiting for better infrastructure and one where the right to education is in constant struggle with the need for survival. But what emerges is the heart-warming and life-affirming story of how people and communities, energised from within, are changing lives—of individuals and the nation. This book is testimony to the essence of education: ‘The heart of the matter is that it is a matter of the heart.’

Have you ever wondered why the government is very often rebuked by the courts? What can be the influencing power of big businesses on the government of the day? How do the courts impact the businesses by their judgments? What can a small change in government policy do to the entire business environment of the country? Why contract enforcement still remains a sore point in India? How does the bureaucracy play a vital link between the political masters and businesspersons? What harm can a whimsical judge do to the legal environment and how can it dampen the morale of the people? Lawfully Yours focuses on the interplay between business, government and law. It is from the perspective of an observer interested primarily in doing business legally and ethically as profit-making ought to be incidental and not the sole goal of doing business. It reveals how and why the external forces of the government and the law impact a businessperson's decision-making. The subjects discussed include business, judiciary, legal system, politics, world trade and infrastructure. Devoid of technical jargon, it uses simple language to drive home important and interesting concepts and points for the reader.

Business and Intellectual Property reflects on the future of IP in the age of new media and shows how—in a rapidly changing business field—managers and decision-makers need to be more perceptive, agile and vigilant than ever before. Drawing on contemporary business affairs and strategies, it explores the nature and scope of IP and the evolution of national laws and global agreements like the TRIPs to protect it. It also explores the measures (the use of patents, copyrights and trademarks) used by some of the biggest brands—Coke, MGM, 20th Century Fox, Microsoft, Harrods, Maruti, Tata—to manage disputes and protect themselves.
The book focuses on the different aspects of business in India required to be taken care of by any businessperson, especially a foreigner, willing to do business in India. India is known for “unity in diversity.” The country being a very old civilization, and of continental size with great diversity, often remains a mystery for most of the foreign investors and businesspersons who get very easily attracted to it because of the humongous market and its potential. The book goes deep into the various important aspects of business in India which essentially hold the key to success of a business venture. A good understanding of the political, economic, social, technological, environmental, and legal aspects (the PESTEL framework) of the business environment in the country holds a businessperson in good stead in comparison with others who have little or no idea of the big picture. The book discusses these aspects with pertinent examples to make understanding their interplay easy. Any person unfamiliar with India as a country will get a good idea of different aspects of the country through the PESTEL framework and will be able to understand the true meaning of unity in diversity. Also, it makes it possible for someone well versed with the system of business in India to appreciate the finer aspects. The book is divided into three modules. The first module provides an overview of business in India, scope and potential for growth, opportunities, and some good success stories. The second module goes into the details of the PESTEL framework and discusses each arm at length. The combined study of numerous factors, which has been divided into different heads for better understanding, brings out many stories giving a fantastic learning experience. A closer look at how things are changing and what can be anticipated arguably is the most important part of the book, providing pointers to remain connected with day-to-day happenings. The third module goes into the practical aspects of doing business and deals with investment, establishing and running a business in India. Altogether, the book is a complete package to facilitate ease of business in the country and will be of interest to practitioners, policy makers and researchers working in this field.
