Modeling and Applied Mathematics Modeling the behavior of real physical systems by suitable evolution equa tions is a relevant, maybe the fundamental, aspect of the interactions be tween mathematics and applied sciences. Modeling is, however, only the first step toward the mathematical description and simulation of systems belonging to real world. Indeed, once the evolution equation is proposed, one has to deal with mathematical problems and develop suitable simula tions to provide the description of the real system according to the model. Within this framework, one has an evolution equation and the re lated mathematical problems obtained by adding all necessary conditions for their solution. Then, a qualitative analysis should be developed: this means proof of existence of solutions and analysis of their qualitative be havior. Asymptotic analysis may include a detailed description of stability properties. Quantitative analysis, based upon the application ofsuitable methods and algorithms for the solution of problems, ends up with the simulation that is the representation of the dependent variable versus the independent one. The information obtained by the model has to be compared with those deriving from the experimental observation of the real system. This comparison may finally lead to the validation of the model followed by its application and, maybe, further generalization.

Between the Vesuvio slopes and the front coastline, there are several archaeological sites of significant cultural and landscape interest, far less popular than Pompei but not less fascinating. These sites, including the ancient towns of Stabiae and Oplontis up until the coastal city of Sorrento, resemble a constellation surrounded by the metropolitan sprawl and lay in the country of the Campania Region like hidden pearls, as the lack of efficient public transport connections makes these destinations difficult to reach for international tourists. This paper, therefore, discusses different ideas for the design of a Cultural and Touristic District, which may improve their accessibility by linking all these archeological sites together with both physical and ICT networks. Back in 2010, such ideas were presented in Castellammare di Stabia International Workshop “Restoring Ancient Stabiae” by a number of scholars from seven Schools of Architecture of both USA and Italian Universities (Maryland UMD, Miami, Oregon, Cornell Univ.; Napoli Federico II, Bari Politecnico, Roma-Sapienza). The main aim of the workshop was to allow actual team working for designing urban requalification and projects of touristic and cultural development, as well as to stimulate debate between local administrators and experts of urban studies, landscape and archaeology. The results achieved by combination of these objectives paved the way for an ambitious goal, that is presenting a realistic scenario of sustainable development based on recovering and exploitation of archeological sites. ANTONIO FRANCO MARINIELLO (1948) is Architect and Full Professor of Architectural and Urban Design at the Departement of Architecture - University of Naples Federico II, Research Director at L.U.P.T. and past member of the PhD board Architectural Composition at the same Faculty of Architecture. He is autor of many works in Architectural Theory and Criticism; furthermore he has published: Questioni di Forma (Napoli 1985), Variazioni-13 esperimenti di Composizione (Napoli 1996), Pre.Testi - sussidiario di Composizione (Napoli 2005).

Primo è un ragazzo solitario e riservato. Nei momenti più bui della sua vita, si è sempre affidato alla scrittura per sfogarsi e andare avanti. Un giorno però ritrova una lettera scritta dal padre, prima che morisse, e le sue certezze si sgretolano. Deluso da tutto, afferra i suoi appunti e sale sul tetto del palazzo per farne un falò. Qui incontra Futura, una ragazza dall’aria ingenua e indifesa che, in piedi sul parapetto, sta per gettarsi di sotto. Primo non ha la vocazione dell’eroe, anzi il cinismo che lo contraddistingue lo porta a scrollare le spalle di fronte a quella scena, proseguendo nell’intento di bruciare gli scritti che per anni ha custodito nella sua stanza. Futura però aspettava solo qualcuno a cui aggrapparsi. Inizia così a essere una presenza fissa nella vita di Primo, che invece non vuole alcun legame con lei e deve barcamenarsi fra uno strano sentimento non corrisposto per D e il coinquilino, Elia, che si sta lentamente distruggendo a causa del vortice malato in cui il suo compagno Riccardo lo sta trascinando. Quando, una notte, Primo e Futura troveranno il corpo senza vita di una giovane ragazza, Primo capirà che rimanere uniti è l’unica possibilità per affrontare la vicenda e che è arrivato il tempo di agire.
