This unique edition of Anton Chekhov's collected works has been formatted to the highest digital standards and adjusted for readability on all devices. Anton Chekhov (1860-1904) was a Russian physician, dramaturge and author who is often referred to as one of the seminal figures in the birth of early modernism in the theatre. He made no apologies for the difficulties he posed to the readers, insisting that the role of an artist was to ask questions, not to answer them. (Applause Books). All the farces of Russia's greatest dramatist are rendered here in the classic lively translations which audiences and scholars alike applaud on the stage and in the classroom. The blustering, stuttering eloquence of Chekhov's unlikely heroes has endured to shape the voice of contemporary theatre. This volume presents seven minor masterpieces: Harmfulness of Tobacco, Swan Song, The Brute, Marriage Proposal, Summer in the Country, A Wedding, The Celebration.
The Sea Gull, Uncle Vanya, The Three Sisters, The Cherry Orchard, and Ivanov, plus 5 one-act comedies: The Anniversary, An Unwilling Martyr, The Wedding, The Bear, and The Proposal.
Anton Chekhov’s only collection of crime and mystery stories. Considered one of the greatest dramatists of all time, Anton Chekhov began his literary career as a crime and mystery writer. Scattered throughout periodicals and literary journals from 1880-1890, these early psychological suspense stories provide a fresh look into Chekhov’s literary heritage and his formative years as a writer. In stories like "A Night in the Cemetery," "Night of Horror," and "Murder," not only will Chekhov’s dark humor and twisted crimes satisfy even the most hardboiled of mystery fans, readers will again appreciate the penetrating, absurdist insight into the human condition that only Chekhov can bring. Whether it is the death of a young amateur playwright at the hands of an editor who hates bad writing, or a drunken civil servant who ends up trapped in a graveyard, these stories overflow with the unforgettable characters and unique sensibility that continue to make Chekhov one of the most fascinating figures in literature.
Humorous gems by one of the masters of modern drama: The Anniversary, An Unwilling Martyr, The Wedding, The Bear, and The Proposal. For students, general readers, and amateur and professional theater groups.
This book addresses the issue of emerging transnationalism in the conditions of post-socialism through focusing on migrants’ identity as a social construction resulting from their experience of the ‘transnational circuit of culture’ as well as from post-Soviet shifts in political and economic conditions in their home regions. Anton Popov draws upon ethnographic research conducted among Greek transnational migrants living on the Black Sea coast and in the North Caucasus regions of Russia who have become involved in extensive cross-border migration between the former Soviet Union (the Russian Federation, Kazakhstan and Georgia) and Greece (as well as Cyprus). It is estimated that more than 150,000 former Soviet citizens of Greek origin have resettled in Greece since the late 1980s. Yet, many of those who emigrate do not cut their connections with the home communities in Russia but instead establish their own transnational circuit of travel between Greece and Russia. This study demonstrates how migrants employ their ethnicity as symbolic capital available for investment in transnational migration. Simultaneously they rework their practices of family networking, property relations and political participation in a way which strengthens their attachment to the local territory. The findings presented in the book imply that the social identities, economic strategies, political practices and cultural representation of the Russia’s Pontic Greeks are all deeply embedded in the shifting social and cultural landscape of post-Soviet Russia and extensively influenced by the global movement of ideas, goods and people.
The 3rd supplement continues the updating of the original 20 volumes on boron compounds published between 1974 and 1979. The first supplement consisting of 3 volumes covered all the literature uniformly up to the end of 1977, whereas the two volumes of the 2nd supplement have extended the literature coverage of boron compounds to 1980 and the four volumes of the 3rd supplement to 1984. The present volume continues the description of boron compounds with halogens, presenting those with chlorine, bromine and iodine. The compounds with chalcogens are completed here along with those of boron with S, Se, Te and Po. The final chapter on carboranes contains the carboranes themselves, together with metallacarboranes, and in the last section a description of carborane-containing polymers, mostly derived from the three isomeric dicarbadodecarboranes. Volume 4 of the 3rd supplement brings this supplement series to an end. It will be supplemented by a separately appearing index volume, which contains all the boron compounds dealt with in volumes 1 - 4 of this supplement series.
This volume, part 3 of the third supplement, continues the updating of the previous volumes on boron compounds: "Boron Compounds" Vols. 1 - 20, "Boron" 1st Suppl. Vol. 1 - 3 (1980/81), "Boron" 2nd Suppl. vols. 1 + 2 (1980/83). This volume deals with the compounds of boron with nitrogen and of boron with fluorine. The modifications of boron nitride are now important materials in modern technology. They have many applications, e.g. as fibers or coatings, in ceramics or alloys, as fillers in organic polymers, for machining of metals and as solid lubricants. They are used in the preparation of semiconductors and in laser nuclear technology. In the chapter on L-triorganyl-N-triorganylborazines, (-Br-Nr-)3, the compound (-B(i-C3H7)-N(t-C4H9)-)3 is the first species having a Dewar-borazine structure, which contains a 1,4 bond and two parallel double bonds in the 6-ring system. Trifluoroborane, BF3, and also its adduct with ether, is important especially in catalytic applications. Among tetra-fluoroborates ÄNOÜ ÄBF4Ü, ÄNO2Ü ÄBF4Ü and ÄNF4Ü ÄBF4Ü are also described. The systems with C1, Br and J with chalcogenes, and finally the carboranes, are contained in the final 4th volume of this series. Volume 4 will also include a formula index for volumes 1 to 4.
