Executive Director of the ACLU Anthony D. Romero and award-winning journalist Dina Temple-Raston present stories of real Americans at the front lines of the fight for civil liberties at a time when our most basic rights are being challenged. From the story of "American Taliban" John Walker Lindh to the battle against the National Security Agency's warrantless spying program, and from a movement in Pennsylvania to force religion into the public school science curriculum to the case of Matthew Limon, a gay teenager sentenced to seventeen years in prison for having consensual oral sex with another teenage boy in Kansas, In Defense of Our America offers readers an eye-opening look at the dangerous erosion of rights in the post-9/11 age of terror and chronicles the courageous ongoing struggle of ordinary Americans to preserve our hard-won constitutional freedoms.
Almost all branches of chemistry and material science now interface with organometallic chemistry-the study of compounds containing carbon-metal bonds. Organometallic compounds range from species which are so reactive that they only have a transient existence at ambient temperatures to species which are thermally very stable. This widely acclaimed serial contains authoritative reviews that address all aspects of organometallic chemistry, a field which has expanded enormously since the publication of Volume 1 in 1964.
ANTHONY L. HALL takes aim at every important issue of our time with a unique and refreshing perspective. He comments on: Obama accepting the Nobel Prize Many people are still wondering what that mysterious light hovering over Norway was on the night before he arrived. But, despite claims that it was generated by a UFO or the failed test launch of a Russian missile, die-hard believers (like me) will tell you that it was just a celestial sign heralding the Nobel coming of Barack Obama. The swine flu pandemic that wasnt An Obama advisor has been quoted saying, You never want a serious crisis to go to waste It is instructive to note that the pharmaceutical companies that produce vaccines, as well as the peddlers of surgical masks and other flu paraphernalia, appear to be heeding this advice. Movie about Nehrus affair with the wife of a British diplomat One can only imagine the physical passion they shared, especially in light of Edwinas reputed nymphomania, which, notwithstanding Nehrus efforts, she reportedly satiated by making scandalous booty calls on a black man for over 30 years. Christmas Day underwear bomber [W]e had the secretary of Homeland Security, Janet Napolitano, assuring us on Sunday that the system worked in this case. If this good-job-Brownie faux pas doesnt suggest that our whole airline security system is devoid of logic, nothing does. Cartoon of Obama kneeling and kissing shoe of Chinese leader To be sure, the cartoon takes some creative license. But the essential point it conveys is undeniable: America cannot stand like a superpower with China squeezing its balls in a financial vise grip! Expenses scandal that rocked UK Parliament Who knew that the only swine flu Britons had to worry about was an epidemic of MPs feeding at the public trough like pigs? Tiger Woodss Thanksgiving-Day spat with his wife Cheating Tiger, fuming dragon.
Frameworks for Integrated Project-Based Instruction in STEM Disciplines presents an original approach to Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) centric project based instruction. We approach project based instruction from an engineering design philosophy and the accountability highlighted in a standards-based environment. We emphasize a backward design that is initiated by well-defined outcomes tied to local, state, or national standards that provide teachers with a framework guiding students' design, solving, or completion of ill-defined tasks. In project-based STEM classrooms students investigate, utilize technological tools, construct artifacts, participate in debates, collaborate, and make products to demonstrate what they have learned. Features include deep coverage of four topics in PBI: scaffolding, student-driven inquiry, driving questions, and development of lessons based on national and state standards. This focus will ensure a deep understanding by the reader of project-based instruction, which will allow the reader to create strong and meaningful lesson experiences for their students. An emphasis on student-driven inquiry will be discussed, including the importance of giving students the cognitive tools, such as statistical analysis tools, they need to research and inquire about the lesson topic. A breakdown of what a successful driving question includes will be explained, and examples given. The book will include strategies for starting the lesson process with ending goals in mind by creating driving questions and breaking down state and national standards. This book is strongly rooted in research in the learning sciences about project-based instruction, but will also be designed to be practically useful to teachers and teacher educators and researchers by bridging research and practice.
“A brave, powerful book from one of freedom’s most courageous defenders. These stories remind us how real -- how personal -- the threats to our Constitutional rights really are -- and of the duty that we all have to protect them in times of trouble. Woven through these riveting chapters is a strong reminder: democracy is the best security.” — Eli Pariser, Founder and Executive Director, MOVEON.ORG Executive Director of the ACLU Anthony D.
