IBM® z/VM® 6.2 introduces significant changes to z/VM in the form of multi-system clustering technology allowing up to four z/VM instances in a single system image (SSI) cluster. This technology is important, because it offers clients an attractive alternative to vertical growth by adding new z/VM systems. In the past, this capability required duplicate efforts to install, maintain, and manage each system. With SSI, these duplicate efforts are reduced or eliminated. Support for live guest relocation (LGR) allows you to move Linux virtual servers without disruption to the business, helping you to avoid planned outages. The z/VM systems are aware of each other and can take advantage of their combined resources. LGR enables clients to avoid loss of service due to planned outages by relocating guests from a system requiring maintenance to a system that remains active during the maintenance period. Together, the SSI and LGR technologies offer substantial client value, and they are a major departure from past z/VM practices. This IBM Redbooks® publication gives you a broad understanding of the new SSI architecture and an overview of LGR. We show an LGR example that shows a typical SAP user environment. In our example, the SAP Application Server Central Instance resides on a Linux on System z® guest and an IBM DB2® 10 database server runs on z/OS®. This book is written for IT architects, who design the systems, and IT specialists, who build the systems.

This first book-length study to trace the evolution of the comic old man in Italian and English Renaissance comedy shows how English dramatists adopted and reimagined an Italian model to reflect native concerns about and attitudes toward growing old. Anthony Ellis provides an in-depth study of the comic old man in the erudite comedy of sixteenth-century Florence; the character's parallel development in early modern Venice, including the commedia dell'arte; and, along with a consideration of Anglo-Italian intertextuality, the character's subsequent flourishing on the Elizabethan and Jacobean stage. In outlining the character's development, Ellis identifies and describes the physical and behavioral characteristics of the comic old man and situates these traits within early modern society by considering prevailing medical theories, sexual myths, and intergenerational conflict over political and economic circumstances. The plays examined include Italian dramas by Bernardo Dovizi da Bibbiena, Niccolò Machiavelli, Donato Giannotti, Lorenzino de' Medici, Andrea Calmo, and Flaminio Scala, and English works by William Shakespeare, Ben Jonson, and Thomas Dekker, along with Middleton, Rowley, and Heywood's The Old Law. Besides providing insight into stage representations of aging, this book illuminates how early modern people conceived of and responded to the experience of growing old and its social, economic, and physical challenges.

The book is adorable, highly entertaining and describes how a conductor interacts with the musicians to create a magnificent performance, The composition called for a Percussionist to dip a vibrating Gong in and out of a tub of water to create a modulation of the Gong sound. The Stage Crew, who had to drag the tub of water on and off the stage next to the Concert Master for every rehearsal and performance were not very happy about this. There idea of “getting even” was to place a goldfish in the tub of water right before the performance. When the Percussionist went on stage just before the performance was to begin and saw the goldfish in the tub, he looked back at the percussion section smiling as he pointed to the tub. We had no idea what he was smiling about. Meanwhile the Stage Crew was having a good laugh as they watched from the wings of the stage. After the performance, the Percussionist told us what happened and explained when the vibrating Gong was placed into the tub the goldfish began to swim rapidly around the tub jumping up and down. By the end of the performance, the goldfish died. But don’t be alarmed, in our story the goldfish does not die.
