Although the Genocide Convention was already adopted by the UN General Assembly in 1945, it was only in the late 1990s that groups of activists emerged calling for military interventions to halt mass atrocities. The question of who these anti-genocide activists are and what motivates them to call for the use of violence to end violence is undoubtedly worthy of exploration. Based on extensive field research, Anti-genocide Activists and the Responsibility to Protect analyses the ideological convictions that motivate two groups of anti-genocide activists: East Timor solidarity activists and Responsibility to Protect (R2P)-advocates. The book argues that there is an existential undercurrent to the call for mass atrocity interventions; that mass atrocities shock the activists’ belief in a humanity that they hold to be sacred. The book argues that the ensuing rise of anti-genocide activism signals a shift in humanitarian sensibilities to human suffering and violence which may have substantial implications for moral judgements on human lives at peril in the humanitarian and human rights community. This book provides a fascinating insight into the worldviews of activists which will be of interest to practitioners and researchers of human rights activism, humanitarian advocacy and peace building.
Due to its internationality and interdisciplinarity, the International Oral History Association (IOHA), which was founded in the late 1970's, is one-of-a-kind in the academic landscape. Driven by the desire to democratize historical scholarship, its members wanted to "give a voice" to groups such as women, workers, migrants, or victims of political dictatorships who had not been heard up to that point. The contributions deal with the academic approaches and the political convictions of the previous generation.
Most early modern scholars know that Petrus Ramus (1515-1572) is important, but may be rather vague as to where his importance lies. This new collection of essays analyses the impact of the logician, rhetorician and pedagogical innovator across a variety of countries and intellectual disciplines, reappraising Ramus in the light of scholarly developments in the fifty years since the publication of Walter Ong's seminal work Ramus, Method, and the Decay of Dialogue. Chapters reflect the broad impact of Ramus and the Ramist 'method' of teaching across many subjects, including logic and rhetoric, pedagogy, mathematics, philosophy, and new scientific and taxonomic developments in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. There is no current work that offers such a broad survey of Ramus and Ramism, or that looks at him in such an interdisciplinary fashion. Ramus' influence extended across many disciplines and this book skillfully weaves together studies in intellectual history, pedagogy, literature, philosophy and the history of science. It will prove a useful starting point for those interested in Ramus and his impact, as well as serving to redefine the field of Ramist studies for future scholars.

Reasons for this may be multiple1 and it is probably difficult to determine universally valid explanations. It does not make a difference whether it is poetry in the mother tongue or poetry in a foreign language; it just seems that poetry in general does not seem to be very popular. Skipping through the current schoolbooks the impression occurs that poetry only plays a subordinate role. Also, when under time pressure and the necessity to drop certain topics, poetry seems to be among the first ones to be dropped. The question arises whether this is due to teachers who never found access to poetry? The extra effort it might take to prepare for a poetry lesson? Or is it lacking courage to approach a topic that seems to be unpopular? It is up to teachers to either inspire or discourage pupils when it comes to poetry. This inspiration or discouragement may last a lifetime. Many pupils probably consider poetry as 'un-cool'. But in the time of events like literature and poetry slams, which are highly enjoyed by many pupils and students, it should be worth re-thinking the attitude about poetry and to bring poetry to the classrooms. With this paper I would like to show approaches, activities and ideas how teachers can make poetry more popular in the classroom.

This book helps teachers and teacher librarians effectively collaborate to teach students the concept of the Big6 and complete research projects in meaningful and memorable ways. Utilizing the popular and familiar illustrated graphic novel format that appeals to young learners, Big6, Large and in Charge: Project-Based Information Literacy Lessons for Grades 3–6 is a book of collaborative unit plans for teacher librarians and teachers that includes all the reproducible materials needed to implement the units. The units are based around the Common Core State Standards, AASL Standards for the 21st Century Learner, and other national content standards. Developed by two library media specialists with extensive experience in creating educational and entertaining lesson plans for teachers, the book takes the concept of Big6 a step further by transforming the process into an engaging character who drops in to help students solve the problems. The focus of this chapter is on the development of miRNA diagnostics and the process for miRNA biomarker development. We discuss pancreatic cancer as a model for the application of miRNA-based tests in different clinical biopsy specimen types. Asuragen’s miRInform® Pancreas test illustrates the development of a laboratory developed test (LDT) that was validated in compliance with Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments (CLIA) and College of American Pathologists (CAP) regulations. We provide an overview of work on miRNA-based signatures which is focused on resolving clinical dilemmas in solid and cystic pancreatic lesions. We also review some of the promising miRNA candidates identified in biofluids from other cancer types. These studies highlight the emergence of miRNA-based diagnostic tools which have the potential to impact the clinical management of cancer by guiding early diagnosis, aiding in the assessment of patients’ prognosis, and enabling the identification of novel, more effective therapeutic targets.

Her extensive background in both Carmelite spirituality and psychology, combined with her life experience as a mother and grandmother, makes Annette Goulden ideally placed to have written this insightful study of Sts. Across the ancient and medieval literature of Judaism, Christianity, and Islam, one finds references to the antediluvian sage Enoch. Both the Book of the Watchers and the Astronomical Book were long known from their Ethiopic versions, which are preserved as part of Mashafa Henok Nabiy ('Book of Enoch the Prophet')--an Enochic compendium known in the West as 1 Enoch. Since the discovery of Aramaic fragments among the Dead Sea Scrolls, these books have attracted renewed attention as important sources for ancient Judaism. Among the results has been the recognition of the surprisingly long and varied tradition surrounding Enoch. Within 1 Enoch alone, for instance, we find evidence for intensive literary creativity. This volume provides a comprehensive set of core references for easy and accessible consultation. It shows that the rich afterlives of Enochic texts and traditions can be studied more thoroughly by scholars of Second Temple Judaism and early Christianity as well as by scholars of late antique and medieval religions. Specialists in the Second Temple period-the era in which Enochic literature first appears-will be able to trace (or discount) the survival of Enochic motifs and mythemes within Jewish literary circles from late antiquity into the Middle Ages, thereby shedding light on the trajectories of Jewish apocalypticism and its possible intersections with Jewish mysticism. Students of Near Eastern esotericism and Hellenistic philosophies will have further data for exploring the origins of 'gnosticism' and its possible impact upon sectarian currents in Judaism, Christianity, and Islam. Those interested in the intellectual symbiosis among Jews, Christians, and Muslims in the Middle Ages-and especially in the transmission of the ancient sciences associated with Hermeticism (e.g., astrology, theurgy, divinatory techniques, alchemy, angelology, demonology)-will be able to view a chain of tradition reconstructed in its entirety for the first time in textual form. In the process, we hope to provide historians of religion with a new tool for assessing the intertextual relationships between different religious corpora and for understanding the intertwined histories of the major religious communities of the ancient and medieval Near East.

This book is about the Old Norse god Odin. It includes references to all occurrences of Odin in the Old Norse/Icelandic texts, including Saxo’s Gesta Danorum, the eddic poems, Snorri’s Edda, and Ynglinga saga and analyses the high medieval reception and literary representations of Odin rather than the religious character of the god. This is the only existing study of Odin in all the Old Norse/Icelandic texts and applies a contextual method: the different guises of Odin are studied on the basis of the various textual contexts and on their background in the literary and Christian intellectual milieu of the time. Contrary to existing studies, this method is non-reductive in that it does not aim at providing a synthesis about Odin’s original nature on the basis of the differing textual uses of Odin in the Middle Ages. The book argues that the perceived complexity of Odin, often highlighted in research, is first and foremost a function of the complex textual material spanning a wide variety of genres each with its particular literary conventions and of the reception of Odin in early modern and modern mythological studies.
