An argument that theoretical works can signify through their materiality—their “noise,” or such nonsemantic elements as typography—as well as their semantic content. In Material Noise, Anne Royston argues that theoretical works signify through their materiality—such nonsemantic elements as typography or color—as well as their semantic content. Examining works by Jacques Derrida, Avital Ronell, Georges Bataille, and other well-known theorists, Royston considers their materiality and design—which she terms “noise”—as integral to their meaning. In other words, she reads these theoretical works as complex assemblages, just as she would read an artist's book in all its idiosyncratic tangibility. Royston explores the formlessness and heterogeneity of the Encyclopedia Da Costa, which published works by Bataille, André Breton, and others; the use of layout and white space in Derrida's Glas; the typographic illegibility—“static and interference”—in Ronell's The Telephone Book; and the enticing surfaces of Mark C. Taylor's Hiding, its digital counterpart The Réal: Las Vegas, NV, and Shelley Jackson's Skin. Royston then extends her analysis to other genres, examining two recent artists' books that express explicit theoretical concerns: Johanna Drucker's Stochastic Poetics and Susan Howe's Tom Tit Tot. Throughout, Royston develops the concept of artistic arguments, which employ signification that exceeds the semantics of a printed text and are not reducible to a series of linear logical propositions. Artistic arguments foreground their materiality and reflect on the media that create them. Moreover, Royston argues, each artistic argument anticipates some aspect of digital thinking, speaking directly to such contemporary concerns as hypertext, communication theory, networks, and digital distribution.

The historiography of English Catholicism has grown enormously in the last generation, led by scholars such as Peter Lake, Michael Questier, Stefania Tutino, and others. In Suspicious Moderate, Anne Ashley Davenport makes a significant contribution to that literature by presenting a long overdue intellectual biography of the influential English Catholic theologian Francis à Sancta Clara (1598–1680). Born into a Protestant family in Coventry at the end of the sixteenth century, Sancta Clara joined the Franciscan order in 1617. He played key roles in reviving the English Franciscan province and in the efforts that were sponsored by Charles I to reunite the Church of England with Rome. In his voluminous Latin writings, he defended moderate Anglican doctrines, championed the separation of church and state, and called for state protection of freedom of conscience. Suspicious Moderate offers the first detailed analysis of Sancta Clara's works. In addition to his notorious Deus, natura, gratia (1634), Sancta Clara wrote a comprehensive defense of episcopacy (1640), a monumental treatise on ecumenical councils (1649), and a treatise on natural philosophy and miracles (1662). By carefully examining the context of Sancta Clara's ideas, Davenport argues that he aimed at educating English Roman Catholics into a depoliticized and capacious Catholicism suited to personal moral reasoning in a pluralistic world. In the course of her research, Davenport also discovered that "Philip Scot," the author of the earliest English discussions of Hobbes (a treatise published in 1650), was none other than Sancta Clara. Davenport demonstrates how Sancta Clara joined the effort to fight Hobbes's Erastianism by carefully reflecting on Hobbes's pioneering ideas and by attempting to find common ground with him, no matter how slight.

The book includes the different regions within South Africa although focusing in most detail on the Cape, the earliest area of white settlement. In a wide-ranging survey the division in medicine between 'western' and indigenous medicine is analysed through an exploration of the evolving practices of healers, missionaries, doctors and nurses. The book considers the extent to which there was a strategic crossing of boundaries in the construction of hybrid practices by these practitioners, and the extent to which patients pursued health by sampling diverse care options. Starting with missionary penetration during the early nineteenth century, the volume outlines interventions by the colonial state in medicine and public health, and the continued resilience of indigenous healing in the face of this. The book ends by relating past to present in scrutinising the legacy of historical structures - including those of the apartheid state - for current health care, and in briefly discussing the huge challenges that the HIV/Aids pandemic poses in impacting on them. The book thus provides an inclusive history of medicine for the 'New' South Africa.

ABOUT THE BOOK Curled up into a little fetal ball, I felt my spirit surrender to death and it certainly never dawned on me that I would ever be capable of sharing my story with anyone. In 2006, ten years after she recovered from a debilitating stroke, neuroanatomist Jill Bolte Taylor self-published her book, My Stroke of Insight. The book is, as Taylor describes in her introduction, “a chronological documentation of the journey I took into the formless abyss of a silent mind, where the essence of my being became enfolded in a deep inner peace.” Taylor’s aim was to share the unusual story of a brain scientist experiencing her own cerebral hemorrhage, the resulting journey to an inner state of bliss, and subsequent recovery. The book’s online success was fueled by a riveting video, then followed by an appearance on Oprah. Eventually, the book was sold to Viking Press and published in hardcover, subsequently becoming a number one bestseller. EXCERPT FROM THE BOOK She then tried to blurt out the words, “This is Jill, I need help!” Apparently Vincent could only discern grunts on the other end of the line, but he recognized Taylor’s voice and understood she was in trouble. Employing similar painstaking methodology, Taylor was also able to reach her doctor. While she awaited help, Taylor alternately spent time engulfed in bliss, and then periods feeling despondent with the awareness of her mental degeneration. As a scientist, she was aware of the implications of her stroke and already grieving the possible loss of her life and/or potential for severe brain damage. When her colleague finally arrived and while she was being transported to McClean hospital, Taylor felt herself let go: “My body fell limp and my consciousness rose to a slower vibration...in the absence of sight, sound, touch, smell, taste, fear, I felt my spirit surrender its attachment to this body and I was released from pain.” Chapters 7, 8, 9: Bare to the Bone, Neurological Intensive Care, Day Two: The Morning After With my mind stripped of its ability to recall the memories and details of my previous life, it was clear to me that I was now like an infant--born into an adult woman’s body. And oh yes, the brain wasn’t working! After being rushed Massachusetts General Hospital, Taylor felt swarmed by medical personnel who poked and prodded her, disrupting her peace. She wanted to be left alone. Eventually she passed out completely. When she awoke she was surprised that she was still alive. Her head throbbed and she realized she had lost all knowledge of who she was, all information held by her left brain, and was now rendered essentially an infant. Despite the discomfort and pain she felt the first day, the stroke was also a dawning of a new kind of recognition. She knew somehow she had lost herself, that the persona of Dr. Jill Taylor constructed and defined by her left brain had died.
