The myriad ways in which colour and light have been adapted and applied in the art, architecture, and material culture of past societies is the focus of this interdisciplinary volume. Light and colour’s iconographic, economic, and socio-cultural implications are considered by established and emerging scholars including art historians, archaeologists, and conservators, who address the variety of human experience of these sensory phenomena. In today’s world it is the norm for humans to be surrounded by strong, artificial colours, and even to see colour as perhaps an inessential or surface property of the objects around us. Similarly, electric lighting has provided the power and ability to illuminate and manipulate environments in increasingly unprecedented ways. In the context of such a saturated experience, it becomes difficult to identify what is universal, and what is culturally specific about the human experience of light and colour. Failing to do so, however, hinders the capacity to approach how they were experienced by people of centuries past. By means of case studies spanning a broad historical and geographical context and covering such diverse themes as architecture, cave art, the invention of metallurgy, and medieval manuscript illumination, the contributors to this volume provide an up-to-date discussion of these themes from a uniquely interdisciplinary perspective. The papers range in scope from the meaning of colour in European prehistoric art to the technical art of the glazed tiles of the Shah mosque in Isfahan. Their aim is to explore a multifarious range of evidence and to evaluate and illuminate what is a truly enigmatic topic in the history of art and visual culture.
When life hands you lemons, make lemonade—or, in Piper Brody’s case, make a Craigslist ad offering yourself up as a hired bridesmaid! A hilarious, touching, coming-of-age novel from debut author Anne Wagener. Piper is a recent college grad who decides to sell her body on Craigslist—as a hired bridesmaid. Her airport bookseller job just isn’t bringing home the turkey bacon, and no one’s going to pay her to analyze Milton’s poetry. Turns out, having an English literature degree from an upstanding university isn’t all it’s cracked up to be. Piper’s Craigslist endeavor soon picks up steam, netting her clients such as Southern peach Stacey, whose interracial marriage causes a family feud, and Alex, a bride-to-be who’s so type A she’s type A-plus. Between fighting off matching T-shirt–wearing teams of “bustle bitches” at gown sales and learning more about fondant than the Cake Boss, Piper falls for Charlie Bell, the brother of a client. A fellow aspiring writer, Charlie’s the only person recently who’s encouraged Piper to follow her dreams. Not to mention, he’s pretty darn cute. But when Charlie turns out to be the groom in one of her gigs—and set to marry the craziest bridezilla of them all—Piper must band together with her newfound friends and stop Charlie from making the biggest mistake of his life.

The first in-depth exploration of the rise and evolution of abstract, symbolic, and conceptual portraiture in American art This groundbreaking book traces the history of portraiture as a site of radical artistic experimentation, as it shifted from a genre based on mimesis to one stressing instead conceptual and symbolic associations between artist and subject. Featuring over 100 color illustrations of works by artists from Charles Demuth, Marcel Duchamp, Marsden Hartley, and Georgia O'Keeffe to Janine Antoni, Felix Gonzalez-Torres, Roni Horn, Jasper Johns, and Glenn Ligon, this timely publication probes the ways we think about and picture the self and others. With particular focus on three periods during which non-mimetic portraiture flourished--1912-25, 1961-70, and 1990-the present--the authors investigate issues related to technology, sexuality, artist networks, identity politics, and social media, and explore the emergence of new models for the visual representation of identity. Taking its title from a 1961 work by Robert Rauschenberg--a telegram that stated, "This is a portrait of Iris Clert if I say so"--this book unites paintings, sculpture, photography, and text portraits that challenge the genre in significant, often playful ways and question the convention, as well as the limits, of traditional portrayal.
As a half-breed who would never belong to his tribe, he sold himself for food, shelter and survival. As the Savage Lord who would never belong to the ton, he sold himself for social acceptance. As a man with nothing left to lose, he's learned that survival doesn't mean as much as self-respect and he'll never sell himself again. Keeping that vow might cost him his heart, his soul and his future. Colt grew up under the not so tender care of the stepfather who named him "Sky Who Walks" as a permanent reminder of his blue eyes that proclaim he can never be a real warrior. Disowned by his stepfather for disobedience after he tries to rescue his mother, Sky survives by trading the use of his body to widowed squaws for food and shelter. When the Earl who had abandoned his mother claims his son, Colton Simon Haversham trades the use of his body to society ladies to gain acceptance to the ton. Disowned by his biological father for refusing to step into a marital trap, Colt Star makes his way to California, vowing never to tread English soil again. Tormented by nightmares, Colt makes another vow --that the price of his passage to manhood is one he will never pay again. The English Earl wants a second chance from the son who doesn't believe in them and crafts a scheme to force Colt into a situation where he needs one himself. The Earl arranges for Colt and his partners to buy a claim, a cabin and a commercial lot in Hangtown, a California gold mining camp. Then he sells the remaining interest in the venture to Lady Viv, an English ice princess whose independent soul craves a future that does not require her to sell herself into a loveless marriage. The father knows his son, and Colt's savage fire melts her ice, but his hatred of cages crafted in the name of love, and his scorn for all things English send the lady fleeing for home. Can Colt's Gypsy partner and an English Duke gifted with a sixth sense force him to face his love for the lady he scorned? Will Colt tread the soil and reconcile with the father he foreswore? If he does, will it cast him back into his darkest nightmares?
This book offers up-to-date insights into the long-standing controversy of whether or not Chinese learners of English adequately express their attitudes in written English. It compares four writing datasets from three groups of student writers (e.g., English-speaking students’ English texts, Chinese-speaking students’ Chinese texts, and both English and Chinese texts produced by the same group of Chinese-speaking students majoring in English), and applies the appraisal framework, an analytical tool developed in the field of Systemic Functional Linguistics. The book provides a nuanced view of the deployment of attitudinal patterns and the linguistic resources used for attitudinal evaluation in Chinese students’ English writing. Accordingly, it offers a valuable resource for all those interested in second language writing, contrastive rhetoric, second language acquisition and systemic functional linguistics.
