This book explores the rich intersection between faith, religion and performing arts in culture-based youth groups. The co-constitutive identity-building work of music, performance, and drama for Samoan and Sudanese youth in church contexts has given rise to new considerations of diversity, cultural identity and the religious practices and rituals that inform them. For these young people, their culture-specific churches provide a safe if "imagined community" (Anderson, 2006) in which they can express these emerging identities, which move beyond simple framings like "multicultural" to explicitly include faith practices. These identities emerge in combination with popular cultural art forms like hip hop, R-&-B and gospel music traditions, and performance influences drawn from American, British and European popular cultural forms (including fashion, reality television, social media, gaming, and online video-sharing). The book also examines the ways in which diasporic experiences are reshaping these cultural and gendered identities and locations.

I was inspired to compile this book after I saw a beautifully presented book of wedding photos and stories gathered by the Peachester Historical Society. I decided to collect wedding photos of brides or couples who were either born in Hughenden, married, or had been living and working in the Hughenden area up until December 1960. The photographs show the fashions of the time, gradually changing until the Second World War, when in some cases brides were married in street clothes. The weddings had to be arranged around the time the groom could obtain leave, and the wedding party could acquire enough petrol coupons to travel. Mary Sladden remembers having to save up her food coupons and swap them for clothing coupons so that she could buy her dress and shoes. Colleen Murdoch's sister Eileen was an excellent sewer, so she made most of the wedding dresses and head gear for her seven sisters. Likewise, Molly Horton sewed for all her daughters and made their dresses for the big day. Most of the brides chose to be married in their local church. Some of them travelled to Townsville. In the early part of the 20th century, many of the receptions were held at the home of either the bride or groom, or relations offered their house. Some of the weddings were held at their station homesteads. There were quite a few double weddings, which would have kept expenses down. Some of the brides wore a family heirloom. The Lethbridge girls wore a beautiful bridal veil made of Brussels lace that had been sent out from England for the wedding of Ella Minter to Robert Lethbridge in 1863. The Greer girls wore a brooch of pearls and rubies that had been handed down several generations.

Lyric and Labour in the Romantic Tradition, first published in 1998, examines the legacy of Romantic poetics in the poetry produced in political movements during the nineteenth century. It argues that a communitarian tradition of poetry extending from the 1790s to the 1890s learned from and incorporated elements of Romantic lyricism, and produced an ongoing and self-conscious tradition of radical poetics. Showing how romantic lyricism arose as an engagement between the forces of reason and custom, Anne Janowitz examines the ways in which this Romantic dialectic infected the writings of political poets from Thomas Spence to William Morris. The book includes new readings of familiar Romantic poets including Wordsworth and Shelley, and investigates the range of poetic genres in the 1790s. In the case studies which follow, it examines relatively unknown Chartist and Republican poets such as Ernest Jones and W. J. Linton, showing their affiliation to the Romantic tradition, and making the case for the persistence of Romantic problematics in radical political culture.

The Irish folklore of the Otherworld is rich in its many manifestations of supernatural beings and personages. This is represented in many different genres of folklore, such as folktales, legends, ballads, memorates, beliefs and belief statements, and exists within the context of rich literary, historical and imaginative parallels. This book presents a new reading of Irish religious belief and legend in a meaningful socio-historical context, examining popular belief and narratives of sinful women and unbaptised children, as a way of understanding a particular worldview in Irish society. Blending postmodern approaches with traditional methodologies, the author reviews the representation of women, sin and repentance in Irish folklore. The author suggests new ways of seeing this legend material, indicating strong links between the Irish and the French, specifically Breton, religious tradition, and tracing the nature of this inter-relationship through the post-Tridentine Counter Reformation Roman Catholic Church and its teachings. Wagner was more than a composer--he was a cultural phenomenon. The author seeks to explain this phenomenon. One claim is that Wagner's music dramas served to provide encouragement and inspiration to Victorians struggling with the problems of a changing and challenging era. Intellectual developments (including the theories of Charles Darwin and the impact of historical scholarship on Biblical studies) had struck a severe blow against religious orthodoxy. Thus, the English strove to retain their inherited or instinctive beliefs and at the same time to accept the conclusions of natural and social science. Frustrated by the academic arguments, many persons turned to less intellectual substitutes, including Wagnerism. Almost all of Wagner's plots involve some form of redemption and hunger for the infinite. The author also claims that Wagnerism drew on the Victorian need for social justice, and points out that just as many Wagnerians sought emancipation from confining materialist philosophies or simply delighted in sexual liberation.
