This is a good book offering a very clear narrative. I believe it would be quite useful for students who are just starting to engage in statistical analysis. I think the strength of the book is definitely its structure - which is really good (I teaching the same order) and also the relative simplicity of explanations. I think this is a good BA level book. I also believe international MA students who have not engaged in any quantitative analysis may find it useful. I find the boxes with explanations very helpful and the illustrative pictograms make the statistical concept more visual and unders.

As a reaction to social and historical changes in the country some new literary forms came into being. Literary critics of the Victorian period put emphasis on the social novel as the most common narrative form of the time. The reason for predominance of this literary genre seems to be obvious: the social novel is “the vehicle best equipped to present a picture of life lived a given society.” However, the phenomenon of the popularity of the social novel and its contribution to the development of the new value system cannot be explained in one sentence. In this paper I am going to illustrate in which ways the social novel as a literary genre responded to industrial processes in terms of its themes and attitudes. The relation between literature and society is always a two-way relation. On the one hand, the social novel was seen as “a mirror of social changes”; on the other hand, it fulfilled certain functions aimed to influence the society in different ways. The second part of my paper deals with the function of the social novel. Since my aims are concerned with the general description of the social novel as a genre, I will not give a detailed analysis of individual novels. To illustrate my arguments by examples, I used “North and South” by E. Gaskell and “Hard Times” by C. Dickens. Both novels appear to be the clear representatives of the genre.

The action of the story takes place in a grocery shop. The choice of such a setting was not made at random. The regulations applied in this supermarket symbolize the norms of society in which the main character, Sammy, lives. The protagonist’s encounter with the three young girls dressed in bathing suits reveals his attitude towards the social order he is unwilling to conform to. At the same time, despite Sammy’s scepticism, it cannot escape the reader’s attention that the character’s view of reality was undoubtedly shaped by the community he exists in. First of all, the role of the grocery shop is worth mentioning. The place is situated “right in the middle of town, and if you stand at our front doors, you can see two banks and the Congregational church and the newspaper store and three real-estate offices (...)” As Timothy Sexton points out, the supermarket is close to the financial, spiritual, informational and property centres of the town.

Essay from the year 2008 in the subject American Studies - Literature, grade: A, , course: American Literature, language: English, abstract: Shirley Jackson’s short story “The Lottery” was first published in the New Yorker, in 1948 and it aroused a lot of controversy among the newspaper’s readers. Those who read Jackson’s story were totally confused and unable to understand the author’s intentions. In 1948 issue of the San Francisco Chronicle Jackson accounted for her reasons behind writing the story: Explaining just what I had hoped the story to say is very difficult. I suppose, I hoped, by setting a particularly brutal ancient rite in the present and in my own village to shock the story’s readers with a graphic dramatization of the pointless violence and general inhumanity in their own lives. (Jackson in Kosenko 1985: 27) Although the author succeeded in startling the readers, the motives for portraying the American society in such a way were still unclear. Is there any correspondence between the writer’s personal experiences and the image of society she depicts in “The Lottery”? First of all, the village described in the story seems to be similar to a rural area in which Jackson lived when she wrote it. Secondly, the short story villagers’ violence may have its origin in an incident from Shirley Jackson’s life. She created the story after she had been pelted with stones by some school children while she had been going home. What is more, Lynette Carpenter makes the interesting remark that Jackson had a tendency to bestow her own features of character on her heroines.

Seminar paper from the year 2019 in the subject Sociology - Basics and General, grade: 1,3, Free University of Berlin, course: Institutional Theory, language: English, abstract: In her paper, the author comes from the idea that there is not one definition of legitimacy and try to summarize the arguments on what legitimacy is. Boyd (2000) suggests that legitimacy is dependent on social structure, systems and norms and that legitimation is a social process, however it is not clear how large a part of the social system must confer its approval for an organisation. These statements she also analyses. In her paper she argues that there is a plethora of theories analysing the gaining of legitimacy, however the process of gaining legitimacy and its establishment depends on diverse factors. To support the argument, she has researched and compared various theories and thus discussed different aspects on how legitimacy is gained. The paper is organised as follows: firstly, she will sum up the theories on what legitimacy means and how is it approached by different authors. Secondly, she discusses the questions of actors and who establishes legitimacy, then I focus on the theories about what role do resources play in establishing legitimacy and lastly, I analyse the approach of legitimacy as a constraint. Another thesis underlying her paper is from Deephouse (1996) who argues that organizational legitimacy is defined as a status conferred by social actors. He states that legitimacy depends on the perspective of a particular social actor, whose values and expectations for action should be congruent with the aspiring legitimate organisation. Moreover, the social actors approve legitimacy for an organisation, where only certain actors have the authority to confer legitimacy, however they need to be identified first. In her seminar paper she also discusses Hybels (1995) who theorizes that legitimation comes from the actors through conferral of resources and communication of positive reputation, however she points out the resource-based view from Tilling (2010) where he suggests that legitimacy is an operational resource too. During her research, she discussed several authors who research the aspects of legitimacy important for her paper. Suchman (1995) and Hamidu (2015) who analyse the concept of legitimacy, Dowling and Pfeffer (1975) who address the importance of resources and the idea of legitimacy as a constraint, Hybels (1995) whose work opposes the argument about resources of the two authors, and other authors who contribute to her topic.

After that I'd like to figure out the challenges and difficulties of social workers and how we can learn to deal with it. We can state, that there are horrible problems in Syria, which policies and the government need to tackle, because human rights get massively hurt. But social work is not just important in Syria, but especially in country’s like Germany, where a lot of refugees find a new home. Social worker try to help them especially with their first needs. That means for example that they reuniting family members and getting volunteers to teach German. Asylum seekers and refugees are entitled to all rights and freedom, which are wrote down in the human rights. To protect refugees means therefore that you respect the human rights and protect them and it is a sign for professionality in your work.
