This book discusses a major issue in the food contact materials industry: non-intentionally added substances (NIAS), and their impact on PET-bottled water. NIAS are chemical compounds that are present in food contact materials but have not been added for technical reasons during the production process, and consumers are usually unaware of their presence. NIAS can include decomposition or degradation products, impurities in the raw materials, unwanted by-products or contaminants from recycling processes, and they pose a challenge for packaging manufacturers. In Europe, the EU Regulations No. 1935/2004 and 10/2011 set out, respectively, the general principles of safety and inertness for all packaging materials, and rules on the composition of plastic food-contact materials. Among the plastics commonly used for bottled water and other non-alcoholic refreshment beverages, polyethylene terephthalate (PET) is the most favoured thanks to its chemical and physical stability, its transparency, low weight and good recyclability. Further, very few additives are used for its manufacture. Nonetheless, due to the complex formulations of polymers, processes and storage, NIAS can also be found in PET-bottled water, with potential cancerogenic or toxic effects. This book provides an overview of the European regulation of NIAS in plastic packaging materials, offering insights into their chemical composition in PET-bottled water. Lastly, it provides a useful discussion on NIAS and their toxicity.

This bibliography presents studies of nonmedical factors (patient, clinician, and practice variables) that influence medical decision-making. Those factors include age, gender and presentational style of the patient; age, years in practice and attitudes of the clinician; and geographical location and list size of the practice. The authors separate such factors into two cateogories. The first is decision-making in the context of general patient management, such as test-ordering, diagnoses, and treatment recommendations. The second category is decision-making in the context of referrals made by generalists to specialists. Each published study identified from an extensive literature search is presented in a structured tabular format, with a brief summary of the study features described above. The studies cited were published in years spanning 1980 to March, 2001. Researchers and clinicians, as well as graduate and postgraduate students, in all medical disciplines will find this volume of interest, as will health psychologists, health economists and social psychologists. This work integrates published research about medical decision-making that has earlier only been fragmented and spread across a variety of journals. With data drawn from over 80 qualitative accounts from medical, pharmaceutical, regulatory and healthcare professionals, this book uses both Hungary and the Netherlands as case studies to demonstrate the potential problem of undue pharmaceutical industry influence within the relationships fostered with the profession of medicine. Chapters systematically describe the lifecycle of a pharmaceutical product from research to distribution, demonstrating the interdependency of industry and medicine. Arguing that the medical profession should be a buffer between the pharmaceutical industry interests and patient interests, the book explores how undue industry influence weakens the ability of the medical profession to do so. Using the theory of institutional corruption, the book aims to analyze how conflict of interest and the weakening of institutional imperatives is a result of institutional interactions rather than individual actions.
