During the final decade of the German Democratic Republic (GDR), young citizens found themselves at the heart of a rigorous programme of socialist patriotic education, yet following the fall of the Berlin Wall, the emphasis of official state rhetoric, textbooks and youth activities changed beyond recognition. For the young generation growing up during this period, ‘normality’ was turned on its head, leaving a sense of insecurity and inner turmoil. Using a combination of archival research and interviews, together with educational materials and government reports, this book examines the relationship between young people and their two successive states in East(ern) Germany between 1979 and 2002. This unusual time-span straddles the 1989/1990 caesura which often delimits historical studies, and thus enables not only a detailed examination of GDR socialisation, but crucially also its influence in unified Germany. Anna Saunders explores the extent to which a young generation’s loyalties can be officially regulated in the face of cultural and historical traditions, changing material conditions and shifting social circumstances, and finds GDR socialisation to be influential to post-unification loyalties through its impact on the personal sphere, rather than through the official sphere of ideological propaganda. At a time of globalisation, this lucid study not only provides unique insight into the functioning of the GDR state and its longer-term impact, but also advances our broader understanding of the ways in which collective loyalties are formed. Dance is often considered an ephemeral art, one that disappears nearly as soon as it materializes, leaving no physical object behind. Yet some dance practice involves people trying to embody something that exists before - and survives beyond - their particular acts of dancing. What exactly is that thing? And (how) do dances continue to exist when not performed? Anna Pakes seeks to answer these and related questions in this book, drawing on analytic philosophy of art to explore the metaphysics of dance making, performance and disappearance. Focusing on Western theater dance, Pakes also traces the different ways dances have been conceptualized across time, and what those historical shifts imply for the ontology of dance works.
This study has two objectives. The first is to explain the nature and historical roots of the problems facing Polish foreign policy in 1938–39 and the manner in which they were approached by the men who shaped and directed Polish diplomacy. The second is to illustrate the political interdependence in these years of Eastern and Western Europe. This interdependence hinged on the German problem. The attitude of France and Britain towards Poland and Eastern Europe as a whole was primarily a reflection of their policy towards Germany; at the same time, this policy was the decisive factor in the individual reactions of Germany's eastern neighbours to the threat of resurgent German power. As far as Poland was concerned, she not only had to strive to avert the danger of German revisionism, the realization of which would have made her a vassal of Berlin, but she also had to consider the possibility of Soviet expansion at her expense. This study is, however, primarily concerned with Polish attempts to obtain security with regard to Germany and, in the period in question, this was the main objective of Polish diplomacy.
Understanding vocabulary and its role in language learning is one of the central tasks of applied linguistic research. It is also an area that has seen, and continues to see, huge progress in terms of the complexity and diversity of work being done. While this makes for a rich and exciting research scene, it can also make the task of developing vocabulary research skills a daunting one as specialist subfields develop ever more sophisticated concepts and methods. This book aims to give readers an understanding of the area that is both detailed and rounded by introducing them to understanding and doing vocabulary research from four key perspectives: corpus linguistics, psycholinguistics, language testing, and teaching and learning. At first I only wrote these notes for myself. It was a difficult moment in my life, I was reborn after a period of darkness, where I had lost contact with reality to the point that I could no longer think or read, an activity that was, and is, the cornerstone of my life: I did not decipher the symbols on the page, they had lost their meaning, I did not remember, everything had been swallowed in the womb of suffering, and the more I tried, the more I failed, to the point of being terrified of picking up a book; every day the malaise plunged me deeper. It was chilling, sad, tormenting. Then I met a specialist who, like a good fairy, brought me back to the surface with love and intelligence; the first thing I did as soon as I felt better was reading. To prove to myself that my head was working again, at the end of each novel I wrote, at first with desperation, then with increasing pleasure, my comments to see if I could finally understand and remember what I was reading. I have two whole thick chunks of these comments, written straight away, with no other concern than talking to myself and reassuring myself.I was and am an avid reader, I have worked with books all my life, for this reason death and rebirth have passed through words. A few years after that period, I reread those comments and found in them both hasty, almost anxious writings, and others more stimulating. Over time, they revealed an inherent power to me; commenting on those books, I commented on myself, the myself that was found now in this, now in that story or novel. It is in this perspective that the analyzes contained in A book to heal are special: they are not the usual reading advice, perhaps thrown down for editorial needs, they are much more, they are confessions and therefore sincere appreciation or slashing of those books that have marked my path to healing. This exceptional character of theirs reveals to the reader a good book to read, and also marks the path that can be taken in difficult moments of life, because we are what we say, and what we read penetrates our depths and remains there until it gives its fruits that nourish the hope and the desire to succeed. Anyone therefore can retrace my path, and later can also add his own. In this way A book to heal was born, whose origin is therefore an act of love, and the words that compose it were written with love. Even the title gradually arose from the feelings I felt in reworking these texts, and I immediately adopted it as soon as it appeared. Inside the volume you will find a section in English, the result of another birth. A bit like everyone else, different personalities coexist within me: Anna, the writer, the Teacher, and so on. A few years ago another one was born: Aileen, who thinks, speaks and writes in English. In this capacity the writing becomes freer somehow, protecting Aileen's feelings and fears with a foreign language. Antonia S. Byatt, Jane Austen, Clarice Lispector, Nicola Lagioia are some of the authors I speak of, each of them has delicately shown me an unusual and surprising aspect of life, they have made me learn that life never ends, but it is always a harbinger of surprises and revelations.
