Chronic alcoholism afflicts approximately 7% of the adult population of the United States and an even larger proportion in some other countries. Among the most devastating health problems associated with alcoholism are increased morbidity and mortality from infections and cancer. Alcohol, Immunity, and Cancer is the first book devoted entirely to presenting up-to-date comprehensive reviews on how the deleterious effects of alcohol consumption impact the immune system and increase the risk of developing many types of cancer. Topics covered include the effects of alcohol on cytokine activity, the modulation of natural killer cell activity by alcohol, fetal alcohol exposure and immunity, alcohol and hepatic carcinogenesis, and alcohol and cancer of the pancreas. Alcohol, Immunity, and Cancer will be invaluable for immunologists, pathologists, toxicologists, microbiologists, biochemists, endocrinologists, and neuroscientists interested in alcohol research. It will also benefit medical experts and general practitioners who need to know the role alcohol may play in the health and disease of their patients.
Concussion, even in its mildest form, can have lasting effects on the individual in a way we're only just beginning to understand. Mild Traumatic Brain Injuries (mTBI), concussion and post-concussion syndrome have previously been conservatively managed with recommendations for 'rest'. But even mild brain injuries and post-concussion syndrome can have an enormous impact on life, long after the 3 months during which they are expected to resolve. There are also significant differences between the way in which concussion affects men and women respectively, as this new research shows. If concussion or an mTBI are affecting you, there is much in this book to help and support your symptoms. Neuropsychologist Dr Priyanka Pradhan has pulled together the latest research to provide a complete manual for overcoming the impact of any mild brain injury, while writer and coach Anna Leggett gives deep insight from her own experiences with post-concussion syndrome. Their book not only explains what a concussion is and how it may present, but also gives comprehensive practical strategies for managing persistent symptoms. Such strategies include how to ask for professional and specialist medical help (and where to get it from), and also some simple self-management techniques. Understanding and Living Well with Post-Concussion Syndrome also explains the importance of sleep and diet, and includes significant psychological and emotional support for mental wellbeing and recovery, a support that is often missing from the clinical pathway for post-concussion syndrome. This book is an essential resource for anyone who feels that they need insight, practical help and emotional support into what is often perceived as an almost-invisible illness, but one which is very real for you or your loved one.

Anna Roth: Rose smell of the life. What is hidden behind the rose smell of the life? Is there him really? Is he learnable? Or only do imagination things and daydreamings meet us in this elegant lyric tape? Anna Roth knows to indicate it brilliantly, as in her both already appeared lyrics to volumes with the title Rose smell of the love, also in this tape rose smell of the life a subtle balance it there is between the learnable life, i. e. of the reality in herself which comes along mostly grey dyed, and the nice things of the life which also meet us, for which we want to long and not let go any more. And she is anxious to us constantly in this world of the luck to lead the images and dreams, but also in a world of the life coping which means, there is an optimism which is invincible if I believe in it. Then behind this scenery of the positive life creation to reflect the attempt also upon the Christian faith and the Christian philosophy and to stir the mental results into the dough of the lived life, the experience of life we discover suddenly quite spontaneously, without advance warning the life entirety. Nothing remains faded out. And it is just this life entirety which happens between both Poles from positively and negatively and the author remains very much anxious, the Christian faith as a mainstay, the life bridge about which we must go everybody, of anchoring and of spicing the life steep path with him of giving him taste so that the life entirety not only eatable remains but our imagination stimulates, us dips into dreams, to us in the morning affectionately with the rose smell of the life to awake kisses. A successful lyric the tape which impresses by his subject variety as well as and above all by his mental depth.
Most regions of the world are plagued by conflicts that are made insoluble by a confluence of complex threads from history, geography, politics, and culture. These "frozen conflicts" defy conflict management interventions by both internal and external agents and institutions. Worse, they constantly threaten to extend beyond their local geographies, as in the terrorist bombings in Boston by ethnic Chechens, or to escalate from skirmishes to full-scale war, as in Nagorno-Karabakh. Consequently, such conflicts cry out for alternative approaches to the classic, state-focused, and sovereignty-based conflict management models that are practiced in traditional diplomacy—which most often produce rather short-term, ad hoc, fragmented interventions and outcomes. Drawing upon the cases of the South Caucasus, the Western Balkans, Central America, South East Asia, and Northern Ireland, Networked Regionalism as Conflict Management offers a theoretical and practical solution to this impasse by arguing for regional collective interventions that involve a long-term reengineering of existing conflict management infrastructure on the ground. Such approaches have been attracting the attention of scholars and practitioners alike yet, thus far, these concepts have rarely involved more than simple prescriptions for regional cooperation between grassroots actors and traditional diplomacy. Specifically, says Anna Ohanyan, only the cultivation and establishment of regional peace systems can provide an effective path toward conflict management in these standoffs in such intractably divided regions.
Here I lie, a matron... I was wife to Fortunatus, my father was Veturius. Unlucky woman, born twenty-seven years ago and married for sixteen - one bed, one marriage - I died after six births, just one child remains." This epitaph of a Roman woman named Veturia, who died in the 3rd century BCE, starkly captures the relentless cycle of birthing, rearing, and burying children that defined the lives of ancient Mediterranean women. In this book, Anna Bonnell Freidin asks: how would Veturia and her family have understood such losses, child after child? What kinds of strategies might she have employed to protect herself and her infants, to equip them for better futures? How would she, her family, and any caretakers have worked to mitigate the dangers of pregnancy and birth? Put more generally, how did Romans approach the risks of childbearing? Freidin demonstrates how the perceptions of these fears and risks not only affected the ways individuals cared for their bodies, but also influenced Roman culture on a much greater scale. Freidin explores this against the backdrop of the Julian laws, which were introduced in 18BC by Rome's first emperor, Augustus, and were meant to guard against the perceived risk that women - and elites generally - might avoid childbearing. They formed part of an ideology of family values, central to imperial messaging for the next three hundred years. From elite medical treatments to birth charms to metaphorical language used by ancient authors to describe birth, Freidin marshals a wide range of evidence and theoretical frameworks to explore both the construction and distribution of risk in a deeply patriarchal, imperialist culture, one in which an ideology of fertility and control confronted the unpredictability of the environment and which, in turn, shaped Roman views of risk as they expanded their empire. Mistakes, misfortunes, and interventions in the reproductive process were seen to have far-reaching consequences, reverberating for generations, altering the course of people's lives, their family history, and even the fate of an empire"--
In this ambitious study, Anna K. Boucher and Justin Gest present a unique analysis of immigration governance across thirty countries. Relying on a database of immigration demographics in the world's most important destinations, they present a novel taxonomy and an analysis of what drives different approaches to immigration policy over space and time. In an era defined by inequality, populism, and fears of international terrorism, they find that governments are converging toward a 'Market Model' that seeks immigrants for short-term labor with fewer outlets to citizenship - an approach that resembles the increasingly contingent nature of labor markets worldwide.
