Nazi Germany: Hitler Youth members Hans and Fritz enter the Black Forest to hunt down a mysterious man in a toga. Yet after they eat magic mushrooms, things go haywire. Their woodland presence alarms the elf king, distrustful of mortals and enraged that the fairy king has failed to guard his borders due to a family crisis: One of his consorts has abandoned him for a dancing bear from Punjab, escaped from a traveling circus. Later, when the fairy liege and his elvish rival find that the accursed Poison Tree of old has awoken, they learn that their peaceful kingdoms face an even graver threat. The Poison Tree must be felled with a magic ax, requiring aid from the Moth Queen, a mysterious agent of divine retribution who kills violent men via moths and moth holes. In the end, only spiritual methods will mend “the breach,” the crack in a protective shield separating mortal and fantastical worlds.

Broken Time, Fragmented Space: A Cultural Map for Post-war Italy examines how the artists and intellectuals of post-war Italy dealt with the 'shameful' heritage of their fascist upbringing and education by trying to craft a new cultural identity for themselves and the country. The continuities between the culture of the fascist and post-fascist periods were, however, far greater than what intellectuals were ready to admit, creating an uncomfortable, sometimes schizophrenic relation to time, as a painful urge to erase the past. Drawing on a variety of critical approaches, Torriglia investigates the efforts to reconstruct a personal as well as a collective self by analyzing both canonical and lesser-known cinematic and literary texts. Organized around four main themes - the use of language, the interaction between personal and public spheres, the perceptual categories of history and memory, and the reconstruction of the female identity - the study also includes historical introductions and sociological commentary that provides an extensive and captivating picture of the cultural production in 1950s Italy, a period that has not yet been extensively studied.

Responding to fears that they are, the self-proclaimed "fatherhood responsibility movement" (FRM) has worked since the mid-1990s to put fatherhood at the center of U.S. national politics. Anna Gavanas's Fatherhood Politics in the United States analyzes the processes, reveals the internal struggles, and traces the myths that drive this powerful movement. Unlike previous investigations that rely on literary or other secondary sources, Fatherhood Politics works from primary ethnographic material to represent a wider range of voices and actors. Interacting with and interviewing members of the most powerful and well-known national fatherhood organizations, Gavanas observed Promise Keeper rallies, men's workshops, and conferences on masculinity, fatherhood, and marriage. Providing a detailed overview of the different organizations involved and their various rhetorical strategies, Gavanas breaks down the FRM into two major wings. The "pro-marriage" wing sees marriage as the key to solving all social problems, while the "fragile family" organizations worry about unemployment, racism, and discrimination. Gavanas uses her extensive anthropological fieldwork as the basis for discussions of gender, sexuality, and race in her analysis of these competing voices. Taking us inside the internal struggles, tensions, and political machinations of the FRM, Gavanas offers a behind-the-scenes look at a movement having real impact on current social policy. This is a good book offering a very clear narrative. I believe it would be quite useful for students who are just starting to engage in statistical analysis. I think the strength of the book is definitely its structure - which is really good (I teaching the same order) and also the relative simplicity of explanations. I think this is a good BA level book. I also believe international MA students who have not engaged in any quantitative analysis may find it useful. I find the boxes with explanations very helpful and the illustrative pictograms make the statistical concept more visual and unders.
