This book presents the artist's vibrant early works alongside more recent sculptures, including the seamless mirror forms and monumental wax pieces that have secured his international reputation.
In a distinguished career spanning thirty years, Anish Kapoor has created an ambitious vocabulary of form manifested in sculptural installation and site-specific works. Using materials as wide-ranging as stone, steel, raw pigment, wax and resin, Kapoor confronts his viewer with both the depths of imagined space and the play of surface illusion. This volume surveys the totality of Kapoor's work, with specific focus on his recent installation Svayambh ('self-creation' in Sanskrit), in which a huge block of red wax travels slowly through the museum space, leaving traces of its passage on walls and doorways. The authors provide in-depth analyses of many of Kapoor's major works, placing them in historical and philosophical context, and offering new insights both into Kapoor's work and the wider context of contemporary sculpture." --Book Jacket.
Anish Kapoor's sculptures represent an important position in contemporary art. Born in Bombay in 1954 and living in London since the early 1970s, he combines Western and Eastern influences to create special work. He became famous with large-scale sculptures in public spaces, most recently on the occasion of the Olympic games in London in 2012. His multi awardwinning work (1991 Turner prize) has been exhibited worldwide since his first solo exhibition in 1980. The monograph gives a concentrated overview of his diverse oeuvre of the last 40 years, from the pigment works to the mirror works and large polished sculptures. In the main section, the temporary, site-related works in the Martin-Gropius-Bau, such as the "....." in the spectacular, central hall, are documented in sketches, models and installation photos. These new works, which impressively frame the architecture of the Martin-Gropius-Bau, are elaborately illustrated and elucidated.
This publication brings together for the first time Anish Kapoor's architectural projects and ideas that span the last 40 years. These are concepts that continue to inform all areas of Kapoor's artistic output, many of which have been realized in works that confound the distinctions between art and architecture, pushing architecture into radical new territory. Kapoor's projects renegotiate the relationship not only between art and architecture but also between the very sense of space within ourselves and that of the external world. The forms he presents to us create spaces that blur the duality of subject and object, of interior and exterior. Monochrome fields of color, mirrored surfaces and fathomless voids all destabilize our place in the world. The more than 2,000 sketches, models, renderings and plans in this book show the journey of these forms to how they might exist in reality as well as the spaces they inhabit or create, both outside and within us. 'For a long time before -- even from the pigment pieces -- I'd been think - ing of my work as potential architecture. I've always been convinced by the idea that to make new art you have to make new space.' -Anish Kapoor
The major outdoor sculptures by acclaimed London-based artist Anish Kapoor are currently on show in the beautiful settings of Kensington Gardens, sited to contrast and reflect the changing colours, foliage and weather. Despite their monumental scale, the works appear as pure reflection of their surroundings: the sky, trees, water, wildlife and changing seasons. The distortions in the works mirror-like surfaces call into question the viewers relationship to both the work itself and the surrounding environment. This catalogue of Kapoors installation is brilliantly illustrated with photographs of the works in situ. It is also the first monograph to feature a comprehensive overview of every one of Kapoors stainless steel sculptures.
For its fourth iteration in 2011, Monumenta has invited the Indian-born British sculptor Anish Kapoor to explore the vast scale of the nave of the Grand Palais in Paris, one of France's most beloved buildings. On the heels of Anselm Kiefer, Richard Serra and Christian Boltanski, this volume records Kapoor's response to the space.
The two artists are the joint creators of the site specific work "A sei mani", 2018, set in the stalls of the San Gimignano ex-theatre-come-gallery space managed by Galleria Continua. The fruit of the collaboration is a large-scale installation which reconfigures the space via huge sheets of iron mesh, held taught by stainless steel tensioners against the backdrop of the 8.7 cm wide black and white stripes of the flooring, and a ceiling studded with points of light. This first joint work is revealed at the end of the exhibition which is structured as a dialogue between the artistic expertise of the two maestros: since their earliest works both have explored time and space".00Exhibition: Galleria Continua, San Gimignano, Italy (26.05.-14.10.2018).
