Drawing on nearly a decade of extensive ethnographic and participatory research, Angela Jill Lederach advances a theory of "slow peace." Slowing down does not negate the urgency that animates the defense of territory in the context of the interlocking processes of political and environmental violence that persist in post-accord Colombia. Instead, Lederach shows how the campesino call to "slowness" recenters grassroots practices of peace, grounded in multigenerational struggles for territorial liberation. In examining the various layers of meaning embedded within campesino theories of "the times (los tiempos)," this book directs analytic attention to the holistic understanding of peacebuilding found among campesino social leaders. Their experiences of peacebuilding shape an understanding of time as embodied, affective, and emplaced. The call to slow peace gives primacy to the everyday, where relationships are deepened, ancestral memories reclaimed, and ecologies regenerated.

The main source of the stories in this book comes from the experiences relayed to me by our customers visiting the Catholic store which I and my co-partner opened the last years of our careers in teaching. A majority of my shoppers were Catholic, but there were many of other faiths including Protestants, Buddhists, Jews, Muslim and those who described themselves as atheists or agnostics. Readers of this book may be moved by the expressions of faith by residents of our community. Reared as a Catholic I have had questions of faith. However, I have been deeply moved by the religious fervor and faith of those who have related their experiences to me. It has truly made a difference in my life. My husband, also reared in a Catholic family, has been more skeptical of miracles of those about which we have written about. We shared an encounter together in Eloy, Arizona with the “Lady in the Bell Tower” which has had a significant impact on his life. This miraculous event has been witnessed by several hundred people of different faiths and nationalities. In many school districts in America, the majority of students in preschools are children of recent immigrants. This book presents an in-depth linguistic description of one Papuan Malay variety, based on sixteen hours of recordings of spontaneous narratives and conversations between Papuan Malay speakers. ‘Papuan Malay’ refers to the easternmost varieties of Malay (Austronesian). They are spoken in the coastal areas of West Papua, the western part of the island of New Guinea. The variety described here is spoken along West Papua’s northeast coast. Papuan Malay is the language of wider communication and the first or second language for an ever-increasing number of people of the area. While Papuan Malay is not officially recognized and therefore not used in formal government or educational settings or for religious preaching, it is used in all other domains, including unofficial use in formal settings, and, to some extent, in the public media. After a general introduction to the language, its setting, and history, this grammar discusses the following topics, building up from smaller grammatical constituents to larger ones: phonology, word formation, noun and prepositional phrases, verbal and nonverbal clauses, non-declarative clauses, and conjunctions and constituent combining. Of special interest to linguists, typologists, and Malay specialists are the following in-depth analyses and descriptions: affixation and its productivity across domains of language choice, reduplication and its gesamtbedeutung, personal pronouns and their adnominal uses, demonstratives and locatives and their extended uses, and adnominal possessive relations and their non- canonical uses.
