Alexander Holloway is three days away from his thirteenth birthday when he senses something dangerous is looming in his future. After his uncle accuses him of digging into their family secrets while attending Drake Terrace boarding school, Alexander heads toward Professor Holloways office hoping to find some answers. But just as he is about to arrive, he sees a dark shadow under the headmasters window. There is no question that there is something evil at Drake Terrace. Things go from bad to worse after Alexander meets Professor Moondare, a scary looking science teacher who gives him a bad feeling. After the headmaster confirms his suspicions and tells him he is in more danger than ever before, Alexander realizes the shadow is stalking him and he must do everything in his power to save his dead fathers most prized possession. As a loud howl haunts the schools hallways, students begin disappearing, another student stumbles upon open graves, and a professor finds a secret door. But everything comes to a head on Halloween night as Alexander attempts to outrun evil. In this supernatural tale, a dark shadow haunts the hallways of a boarding school, exposing secrets and leaving the fate of one of its students in the hands of his classmates, professors, and a presence from the past.
This book “A Woman’s Long Road to Happiness” is just that, it’s a long road to finding happiness after a physical and verbal abusive life. For seventeen years of living in an abusive relationship she decided enough was enough. It’s a painful and inspiring triumphant story of a woman who fought to protect herself and her children from the abuser. She found her life’s treasures afterwards. There are many women who live and stay in an abusive situation for one reason or another. Life is a long road that comes with many obstacles and sharp winding curves which eventually takes you to a crossroad of making a hard decision as to which road you should take. Everyone’s abusive life story is different, some end up leaving and some never do. The greatest conqueror is to continue keeping the faith. When seeing the darkest helpless side of your life, never lose hope because he (God) will always have your back. The answers to prayers don’t ever come right away but in time the doors will open to be able to fly into another dimension that changes the mind or situation for a better life. I hope this book helps others that have lived or have had similar experiences and to say that there is a silver lining with a bright beautiful rainbow at the other end of the road.
2015 PEN Open Book Award Finalist Angela Jackson’s latest collection of poetry borrows its title from a lyric in Barbara Lewis’s 1963 hit single “Hello Stranger,” recorded at Chess Records in Chicago. Like the song, Jackson’s poems are a melodic ode to the African American experience, informed by both individual lives and community history, from the arrival of the first African slave in Virginia in 1619 to post-Obama America. It Seems Like a Mighty Long Time reflects the maturity of Jackson’s poetic vision. The Great Migration, the American South, and Chicago all serve as signposts, but it is the complexity of individual lives—both her own and those who have gone before, walk beside, and come after—that invigorate this collection. Upon surveying so vast a landscape, Jackson finds that sorrow meets delight, and joy lifts up anger and despair. And for all this time, love is the agent, the wise and just rule and guide.

If you do the crime you gotta do the time.' This adage reflects the overall attitude most Americans have about crime and the criminal justice system. Implicit in this adage is the notion that once 'the time' is done, the individual is free to re-enter society and resume a normal life. In Prisoner Re-entry and Social Capital, authors Earl Smith and Angela J. Hattery challenge this myth. Prisoner Re-entry and Social Capital takes as its starting point interviews with twenty-five men and women during the summer of 2008 about their experiences with re-entering the 'free world' after a period of incarceration. By analyzing the experiences of these men and women, Smith and Hattery look in depth at the factors that inhibit successful re-entry and illustrate some successes and failures. The book examines individual characteristics that inhibit successful re-entry such as addiction and sex offender status as well as the unique challenges faced by women. Uniquely, Smith and Hattery focus on the role that social capital plays as one of the most important factors that shapes the re-entry experience. Today, one of the most pressing issues facing scholars, those who work in the criminal justice system, and the citizenry as a whole is the extraordinarily high rate of recidivism. These interviews and analyses provide a deeper and more precise understanding of the biases faced by re-entry felons in the labor market and work to address the key barriers to re-entry in hopes to aid in their elimination.
Socio-Anthropological Approaches to Religion: Environmental Hope interprets the fundamental functions of spirituality through the theories and practices of hope and understanding the futuristic aspiration of new religious movements. The book portrays a neutral notion of hope that can be either religious or humanistic in the face of the suffering or despair of present reality. The concept of hope (or hopelessness) is demonstrated in each chapter under the global circumstance of health risk. Part One represents the various theories of hope in Christian history, ecology and climate, the Sabbath and surveillance, and the triune God. The insecure situation that creates the expectation of hope is demonstrated in Part Two, where the case studies of terrorist attacks, immigration, volunteering behavior, religious education, and medieval Islamic tradition indicate social unbalance. The last section illustrates the cultural anthropology of hope through the activities of different native new religious movements including the Moonies’ Unification movement, Yoruba Nigerian indigenous spirituality, and Cosmovisions of Sepik New Guinea. This book examines hope as a crucial element of human’s internal healing beyond medical technology.
