First published in 1967, The Scottish Carter presents the history of the Scottish horse and motormen's association from 1898- 1964. The road haulage industry has expanded at the tempestuous rate, and here is recorded an equally tempestuous history of a trade union built by the men who have driven the vehicles. Angela Tuckett, an active trade unionist, also has practical knowledge of the trade union movement in the capacity of qualified solicitor and journalist. She explains the development of the men’s outlook, from the relations which obtained between master and servant in the intolerable conditions of the horse drawn era to the present-day crisis in collective bargaining. With the change from horse to mechanical traction came the fight for a measure of public control, the Royal Commission on Transport 1928-30 and the road traffic legislation which followed. The author describes the struggle for traffic between private railway companies and private road hauliers, nationalization and denationalization of road transport, and how the union reached the conclusion that the only solution to traffic chaos is an integrated transport system under public ownership. In tracing how and why the Scottish union arose, its special problems and the reason for keeping its Scottish bases, the author has drawn upon the union’s official records and other original sources. The result shows a modern progressive union, principled in its relations with other organizations, responsive to change and equipped to meet new problems for which many larger unions still have to find the solution. This is an interesting book for students of trade union history, Scottish labour history and British history.

This is the first book to analyse urban social relations in the eastern Roman Empire through the perspective of one elite family. From the late first to the mid-third century CE, the Vedii and their descendants were magistrates, priests and priestesses of local and imperial cults, and presided over Ephesos' many religious festivals. They were also public benefactors, paying for the construction of public buildings for the pleasure of fellow citizens. This study examines the material evidence of their activities - the buildings with their epigraphic and decorative programs – to show how members of the family created monuments to enhance their own and their family's prestige. It also discusses the inscriptions of the honorific statue monuments raised by the city and its sub-groups for the family in return for their benefactions, arguing that these reflect the community's values and interests as much as they commemorate the benefactors and their families.

However, the term "high priest" is not so common in the first four chapters of Hebrews, occurring only four times with a further reference to sacrifice in 1:3. Rather than emphasising the priestly or sacrificial activity of Christ, these opening sections contain a number of references to creation: 1:2-3,10-12, 2:5-9, 10; 3:1-6; 4:3-4 and 4:9-10. In this volume, Angela Costley uses discourse analysis to explore the importance of the topic of creation to the discourse of the Epistle to the Hebrews, uncovering a close link between creation and salvation. She highlights the interaction of the topic of creation with the topic of salvation in the discourse to uncover a depiction of Christ as the creator who descends to take on human flesh, God who becomes human, in order to lead humanity heavenward.

Every year, nearly 2 million injuries and some 1,300 deaths result from so-called intimate partner violence. In this work, psychotherapist Browne-Miller uses vignettes, as well as standing and emerging research, to detail both healthy and hurtful relationships and to show partners how to recognize and change relationships on, or headed toward, the path to abuse. She also explains when to leave a relationship, as well as how to do that so as to disentangle without further harm. This is a book that will interest not only those involved in, or who know of someone who is or might be involved in, an abusive relationship, but also students and scholars of psychology, counseling, social work, women's studies, and men's studies. When Cathy and John married 20 years ago, the relationship seemed almost charmed. But over the years as John's career became more established and Cathy raised the family of three children, things changed. First angry fights developed, followed by verbal and gestured threats of violence, and later, actual physical attacks and injuries. Several times Cathy called police, but when they arrived, fearing the social stigma as well as John's retribution, she would explain her injuries as dealt out by a prowler. When friends or family asked, she would claim the cuts or bruises were due to a fall or some other accident. But eventually, when her arm had been broken, a tooth knocked out, and her face bruised so badly she could not cover it up with makeup, she finally left the house and her husband—only to be stalked. Cathy and John are one couple that Angela Browne-Miller introduces us to in this book that looks at the increasingly publicized incidence of intimate partner violence, abuse that takes place behind closed doors, inside marriages and other loving relationships. Only a fraction of this abuse is ever reported, so just a fragment of the problem is reflected in national statistics that show nearly 2 million injuries and some 1,300 deaths annually caused by this so-called intimate partner violence. In this work, Browne-Miller uses vignettes, as well as standing and emerging research, to help us recognize the difference between a relationship being effected by normal stressors, and one that is abusive, or perhaps even deadly. Psychotherapist Browne-Miller details both healthy and hurtful relationships and shows partners how to recognize and change relationships on, or headed down, the path to abuse. And she also explains when we should leave a relationship, as well as how to do that to disentangle without further harm. This is a book that will interest not only lay readers who are involved in, or know of someone who is or might be involved in, an abusive relationship, but also students and scholars of psychology, counseling, social work, women's studies, and men's studies.
