Goldsworthy's first major wall was constructed in Cumbria in the UK. The successor is at the Storm King Art Center in New York State. This is a textual and photographic account of the wall.
Our relationship with trees is a lengthy, complex one. Since we first walked the earth we have, at various times, worshiped them, felled them and even talked to them. For many of us, though, our first memories of interacting with trees will be of climbing them. Exploring how tree climbers have been represented in literature and art in Europe and North America over the ages, The Tree Climbing Cure unpacks the curative value of tree climbing, examining when and why tree climbers climb, and what tree climbing can do for (and say about) the climber's mental health and wellbeing. Bringing together research into poetry, novels, and paintings with the science of wellbeing and mental health and engaging with myth, folklore, psychology and storytelling, Tree Climber also examines the close relationship between tree climbing and imagination, and questions some longstanding, problematic gendered injunctions about women climbing trees. Discussing, among others, the literary works of Margaret Atwood; Charlotte Bronte; Geoffrey Chaucer; Angela Carter; Kiran Desai; and J.R.R. Tolkien, as well as work by artists such as Peter Doig; Paula Rego; and Goya, this book stands out as an almost encyclopedic examination of cultural representations of this quirky and ultimately restorative pastime.
Can creativity be 'taught'? Or is it simply innate? This book will help you find your creativity through your own unique identity and experience, challenging you to fight those negative voices, get out of your habitual comfort zones and - most importantly - play. Part practical workshop and part provocative guide, Creativity Begins With You is an invaluable companion for any student working across the creative disciplines.
The River Nile fascinated the Romans and appeared in maps, written descriptions, texts, poems and paintings of the developing empire. Tantalised by the unique status of the river, explorers were sent to find the sources of the Nile, while natural philosophers meditated on its deeper metaphysical significance. Andy Merrills' book, Roman Geographies of the Nile, examines the very different images of the river that emerged from these descriptions - from anthropomorphic figures, brought repeatedly into Rome in military triumphs, through the frequently whimsical landscape vignettes from the houses of Pompeii, to the limitless river that spilled through the pages of Lucan's Civil War, and symbolised a conflict - and an empire - without end. Considering cultural and political contexts alongside the other Niles that flowed through the Roman world in this period, this book provides a wholly original interpretation of the deeper significance of geographical knowledge during the later Roman Republic and early Principate.

What is ecotherapy, how does it relate to mental health, and how can it reduce emotional distress and promote general wellbeing? This book explains how a deeper connection to nature can improve quality of life, by combining the therapeutic power of mindfulness and being out in the natural world. Examining the latest psychological research evidence into how and why the natural world has such a positive effect on us, this book shows how best to utilise these therapeutic connections in practice. 100 nature-based activities are included, from experiencing the full force of the wind, to creating a sound map of natural noises. The aims of each activity are clearly outlined, with detailed guidelines for facilitating outdoor sessions with adults effectively and safely, and advice to help make the most of the outdoors in all weathers and seasons.
This spectacular book brings together work made by Andy Goldsworthy in Britain, France, the United States, Australia and Japan between 1990 and 1993. It includes works that involve not only stone of various kinds slate, limestone, sandstone, river boulders but also leaves, flowers, sand, clay and scrap steel. A riverside slab of rock in St Louis, Missouri, glows with the colours of autumn leaves, becomes part of a wall, acquires an overall covering of green leaves, and is cradled in a nest of branches. In a forest in the Lake District, a wall snakes its way through the trees. Sandstone arches progress across the floor of a Dumfriesshire quarry. A dead tree in the Australian outback is miraculously clothed in rust-red sand Stone: Andy Goldsworthy offers an unparalleled opportunity to appreciate the extraordinary breadth of the artists output and to understand more about this exceptionally talented sculptor whose work is accorded worldwide recognition.
A fresh examination of Luke's vision for life together in a local church, defined by three key passages in the book of Acts, offers modern churches twenty distinct characteristics of an exemplary life together today.
Q. What’s worth £2,000,000,000, answers to no-one and operates out of public sight? A. Britain’s influence industry The corporate takeover of democracy is no conspiracy theory – it’s happening, and it affects every aspect of our lives: the food we eat, the places we live, the temperature of our planet, how we spend our money and how our money is spent for us. And much more. A Quiet Word shows just how effectively the voice of public interest is being drowned out by the word in the ear from the professional persuaders of the lobbying industry. And if you’ve never heard about them, that’s because the most effective lobbying goes unnoticed. A Quiet Word shines the brightest of lights into one of the darkest and least-understood corners of our political culture. It is essential, urgent, authoritative reading for anyone interested in our democracy and where this country is heading. And by showing how influence is constructed, it puts power back in your hands.
Real and permanent peace is possible. Written for those struggling with the pains and trials of life, this book will help Christians find and share lasting peace and reconciliation with the world.
